Naughty Dog Hints That the PS3 Might Be Maxed Out

Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves showed a big graphical jump from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Can we expect the same thing from Uncharted 2 to Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception? From the footage we've seen, the game definitely looks better but the jump isn't that big as compared to its predecessors and Naughty Dog explains why.

Speaking to Spong, game director Justin Richmond explains this and even comments that we won't likely see a jump as significant as that within the PS3's current lifecycle.

Uncharted 3 isn’t just an incremental update - we did change lots and lots of things - but graphically speaking, it’s not going to have the same gap [as between Uncharted 1 and 2]. It was never going to happen.

The way we made it, how much of the PS3’s power we were using... that huge gap that you saw between Uncharted 1 and 2 is the kind of thing that really only happens once per generation. We pushed it really hard.

But I don’t think you’ll ever see that same jump again, at least on a PlayStation 3. There was just so much power left over in the PS3 when we made Uncharted 1, that we figured out how to use and really took it to town when developing Uncharted 2.

This is the same sentiment shared by other developers...one that's making it apparent that the current generation of consoles are graphically maxed out. Not to say that games these days are looking ugly - on the contrary, Uncharted 3 and its kind are looking fantastic so far.

Do you think Naughty Dog is correct? If so, should we start asking for the next-generation of consoles now?

Why do we need better graphics? Games like Uncharted 3 and Arkham City look amazing. Right now a graphics upgrade isnt necessary and I would argue that it isnt wanted (yet).

Just because you can't make a game any prettier doesn't mean you've reached "the end of game development" for a platform... That aside, I think 3 games for a game series on a single platform is maxed out in its own right.

no, we don't need new systems yet. it feels like only yesterday the PS3 came out, I'm MORE then sure we won't get a PS4 till 2014. announced maybe E3 2013. no sooner then that. the PS3 is only 4 lol

I agree with the comments here saying we don't need a huge leap in graphics just yet. Games like Uncharted 3 and BF3 look amazing, and it really makes you appreciate the value of the current consoles even more when you look back at the first generation of games released for them back in '05/'06. It's almost like we've experienced a generational leap within a generation in terms of the visual quality of the latest games now vs the launch titles, which were mostly just last-gen games with an HD skin slapped on to look pretty. It's not like previous generations, where the graphical and technological gaps between the current consoles and what's just on the horizon had such a stark contrast, like the 16 to 32/64 bit era, or the 32/64 to 128 bit era. If every game over the next couple of years looks as good as BF3 or Uncharted 3, would you really complain? I know I sure as hell wouldn't!

Hey, if other developerswere putting out games of UC3 graphics quality, yeah maybe. But for franchises other than UC, KZ and GoW there's still plenty of juice left.

Now that the graphics engine has maxed out the PS3, it's time to spread it out so developers can concentrate one GAMEPLAY.

The super high end PC's games sure get better graphics with better performances, but at the end the fun factor is just about the same. I don't see that big gap which would justify yet another console. Unless some very innovative technology will see the light, the current gen consoles can go on for another 10-15 years. What the video game market may lack right now are new ideas not new hardware. The hardware is powerful enough to have all of them implemented.

Jumpin (on 18 October 2011)

It would be nice to have a new console right about now I must admit. This generation already feels ancient. Mostly I would like to see a newer console with a remake of Final Fantasy 7.

These are old news Naughty Dog already said that statement before releasing U2. The team were quite talented to figure out the machine pretty fast, and I don't think anyone needs a new generation for at least 5 more years. Actually even in 10 years wouldn't make that much of a graphical leap from Uncharted 2. there has to be a new method of gaming because graphics are touching reality and can no longer astonish you the way it did with U2.

Its funny how some dev say they need a new gen,but there games never look anything like uncharted 3 looks.

Games look fantastic these days. With a 2-4 year development cycle and multi-million dollar budgets to get AAA's out the door, I don't want anything that's going to cause the price of development to go up (which would mean price of purchase/DLC going up) or the dev time. I know we're right on the cusp of a slew of games coming our way, but it's not usually like this. Games cost so much and take so long to make that new IP's aren't getting explored as much as they once were. Don't get me wrong, I love my trilogies, but I would like to see brand new ideas, and new gameplay. I'm really tired of hearing about a game, getting excited for it, and then watching the YEARS pass on the calendar before we can play it. We have so much new game tech now, that if developers were told they could ONLY make new IP's for the remainder of this gens cycle, I bet we'd be pleasantly surprised at to what we got. All that to say, games look great, now it's time to start wowing us with new and exciting gameplay.

...on a related note, the interwebs have been used up. Really though, if developers think it's hard making a profit now then why ask for a new system? If graphics can't be pushed much farther on the PS3 then the more games they release the more efficient they will be and the more money they will make (all the while making pretty games). The problem is the costs these days, and the new generation is, unfortunately, going to drain a lot of money out of the pockets of costumers who then won't have all that money ready to buy games from devs. If anything, the ps3 being "used up" should be good excuse for ND to publish their next game at the same graphical quality for relatively less production cost...I mean after all, the ps3 is used up so who could make a prettier game then them anyway?

selnor (on 19 October 2011)

Its funny how id and dice have already said this. And now nd say it Boone argues. Oh can only be vgc. Id like to see nd move to 60fps games now. After playing rage and forza 4 recently 30fps is real slow in comparison. Turn 10 were first to say 360 won't get much better. And I can understand. At 60fps forza 4 is the best visuals I've seen this gen followed by rage so far. Forza 4 has seriously cheated somewhere surely. It is impossible to get anymore lut of the current gen than that.

reviniente (on 18 October 2011)

Wot?! Why I never... What about the 10-year plan?

jkudlacz (on 18 October 2011)

Yes, I think SONY needs to announce PS4 next year at E3 and then deliver it to our door steps at the end of next year, or 2 years from not at the latest, with Uncharted 4.

invetedlotus123 (on 18 October 2011)

I doubt we are going to see an Uncharted 4. Naughty Dog is pretty good in knowing when to move on and stop with a franchise. They did it with Crash:Bandicoot and Jak, Uncharted will be no different.
