Overview
FIFA Soccer 12 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 lead another strong week for software sales, as they both opened up with a combined three million in sales. There are six debuts in the top 40, which is down from eight last week. Software milestones this week: FIFA Soccer 12 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sold over one million copies each; and Madden NFL 12 (X360) reaches the one million mark. Five games sold over 100,000, up from four last week, and the top 15 sold over 50,000, down from 16 last week.
Worldwide Hardware
Week on week sales are up for the PlayStation 3, flat for the DS and PS, and down for the Xbox 360, Wii and 3DS. The 3DS is at the top with sales of 225,000, which is down 6,000 (-3%). Xbox 360 sales remain the second bestselling platform and bestselling home consoles for a second straight week. It sold 187,000 units, a drop of 17,000 (-8%). The PlayStation 3 is up just 5,000 (3%) to 176,000. The Wii is down just 1,000 (-1%) to 94,000 units sold. The DS is flat week on week, as it sold 83,000 units. The PSP sold 74,000 units, which is the same as last week. Total week on week sales are down 19,000 (-2%) to 839,000.
Year on year sales are down for every platform. The PlayStation 3 is down 64,000 (-27%), the Wii is down 38,000 (-29%), and the Xbox 360 is down 5,000 (-3%). The PSP is down 51,000 (-41%) and the DS is down a massive 196,000 (-70%). Total year on year sales are down 129,000 (-13%).
For this week The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 nearly double the sales of the Wii. The Xbox 360 has a 41 percent market share; the PlayStation 3 has a 38 percent market share; and the Wii has a 21 percent market share. The Xbox 360 is in first for a second week, PlayStation 3 in second for a second week and the Wii in third for a sixth week. Compared with ten weeks ago PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales are up, and Wii sales are down.
3DS remains well ahead of the DS and PSP outselling both of them combined for eighth straight week. The gap between the DS and PSP shrinks to 9,000 this week as they have been within 20,000 of each other for eight weeks now. The DS has a 53 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the PSP a 47 percent. Compared with ten weeks ago 3DS sales are up and the DS and PSP sales are down.
Worldwide Software
Six games debuted in the top 40 this week, down from eight last week. FIFA Soccer 12 (PS3) debuted at the top as it sold 1.77 million units. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number two with sales of 1.24 million units. The Wii version debuted at number 18 with sales of 40,000. The PSP version debuted at number 32 with sales of 20,000. The game launched in the Americas and EMEAA, with no plans to be released in Japan.
The ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (PS3) debuted at number four as it sold 158,000 units. The game launched in the Americas and EMEAA, while it launched in Japan the week before.
The Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki (PSP) debuted at number five with sales of 132,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.
Shin Sangoku Musou 6 Moushouden (PS3) debuted at number seven with sales of 83,000. The game launched in Japan.
X-Men: Destiny (X360) debuted at number nine with sales of 69,000. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number 15 with sales of 53,000. The game launched in the Americas and EMEAA, with no plans to be released in Japan.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 (PS3) debuted at number 22 with sales of 34,000. The game launched in the Americas and will launch in Japan on October 6 and EMEAA and October 14.
Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Gears of War 3 (X360) at number three with sales of 647,000. F1 2011 (PS3) is at number six with sales of 86,000. Dead Island (X360) is at number eight with sales of 75,000. F1 2011 (X360) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 67,000.
Week on week software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, Wii and PSP and down for the Xbox 360, DS and 3DS. The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot this week with 3.47 million games sold, a huge increase of 1.64 million (89%). The Xbox 360 sold 3.08 million games, a decrease of 1.14 million (-27%). Wii software sales are up 49,000 (4%) to 1.83 million. The DS sold 773,000 games, which is down 20,000 (-3%). PSP game sales are up 45,000 (11%) to 437,000 games sold. The 3DS sold 239,000 games, a decrease of 64,000 (-21%). Total combined software is up 505,000 (6%) week on week to 9.18 million.
Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and down for the Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 113,000 (3%), the Wii is down 571,000 (-33%) and the Xbox 360 is up 272,000 (10%). The DS is down 909,000 (-54%) and the PSP is down 408,000 (-48%). Total combined software is down 1.26 million (-12%) games sold year on year.
Like with the hardware sales the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 software sales are well ahead of the Wii, with each outselling the Wii by nearly three times. The PlayStation 3 has a 45 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 40 percent, and the Wii with 15 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are up and the Wii is down.
The DS remains at the top as the gap between it and the PSP shrink slightly, as the DS has a 64 percent market share and the PSP has a 36 percent market share. 3DS software sales remain in third. Compared to ten weeks ago the 3DS and PSP are up and the DS is down.

I find it strange that sales of PS3, are much lower now in US than few weeks back especially after SONY started to market the new $249 price. Anyways, I am looking forward to this Holiday season, I do wander how it will all play out. I think Wii is done, it will be a duel between XBOX 360 and PS3. I think XBOX 360 will take US and PS3 EMEAA and Japan, only question is will PS3 dominate outside of US? With current sales I don't see PS3 matching their sales from last year unless they really crank up their advertisement, unless VGCHARTZ data is under tracking them.
I seriously think VG is undertracking the PS3, unless my eyes play tricks on me...
