Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia has announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japan-only will launch in Japan on November 19 for 55,000 yen ($348 USD). Pre-orders will open at PlayStation retailers and online stores on October 20.
The Japan-only PS5 console locks the language to Japanese and it can only be used with PlayStation Network accounts registered in Japan.
A Midnight Black standalone disc drive will release alongside the console for 11,980 yen ($76 USD) for those who want to play physical games.
PlayStation did reiterate it still plans to stop releasing new PlayStation physical game discs in January 2028.
"PlayStation games newly released from January 2028 onward will be available only as downloads on the PlayStation Store and at various retailers. Please note that disc versions of games released before January 2028 will still be available," reads the post.

Japan prefers more physical games but ok Sony.
Japan only?! Are you serious? Man that’s the coolest looking PS5 to date.
It's easy to use different color plates to completely change the color of the PS5. I have made my original PS5 all Pink and all Black at various points.
What's cool about its just black.
Official black plates for the Pro incoming worldwide? One can dream.
Another hole shot in Sony's foot.
Seems region locking provides cheaper hardware. Can the Brits have an English locked PS5 then. How about a French locked one for the French as well?
This is a uniquely Japan situation because of how weak the Yen is right now. As you can see, it's conversion price is only ~$350 USD, like half the price of a PS5 in America. If it wasn't Japan-only language and Japan-only PSN accounts, everyone here and in Europe would be importing it lol - hence exactly why those things are done.
Hmmm... this is very interesting that it is launching Nov. 19
It seems Sony cares at least a little about sales in Japan after all.
