Epic Games Reportedly Tells Developers to Use 'AI First' Development as it Delays Disney Project - News

Epic Games has reportedly asked developers to use more artificial intelligence (AI) tools in development of games as it delays the release of an upcoming shooter that was in collaboration with Disney. This is according to people familiar with the project that spoke with Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.

The developers are told to use more AI tools in order to finish the game, a shooter that features characters from the Marvel and Star Wars franchise. It was originally supposed to release in March 2027. However, the release has been pushed with no new date communicated.

Epic Games has told developer to implement "AI first" production using tools like Anthropic's Claude, and then manage and guide the world.

"No more hand-written code," said one of the game's directors in an internal message to staff reviewed by Bloomberg. All art for the game would be "generated with full AI workflows."

Epic Games communications director Jake Jones in a statement to Bloomberg said, "We’re embracing AI-accelerated development, led by Epic developers who are the visionaries and creative drivers for everything we do."

The sources said developers at Epic were stunned on a video call last week. Some joked on how they should handle errors produced by the AI-generated work, asking if they should use Claude to fix its own mistakes. Other developers hoped the company would reverse course and that it was not a serious request.

Progress on the Disney shooter is taking longer than expected due to Epic underestimating how many people and how much time it would take to develop, said the people.

My experience: it'll generate a pile of code very fast for a few months. That code will appear good. Then it's going to break. Debugging it will be a nightmare... AI uses all kinds of side-effects and bugs, and the issues it introduces are not simple ones like a human makes.

Probably something like Stromtroopers and Hydra v The Rebellion and Shield.
Probably with a few Jedi, Sith and superhero mixed in.

I'm more baffled by the idea of a Star Wars and Marvel crossover shooter. Kinda sounds like this project is being taken about as seriously as the 'AI first' design implies.

Sounds like they have at least one bad director causing issues.

I allow games to speak for themselves, AI or not.
