The Japan Preview: 10/2/11 Edition (Entering the Doldrums) - News

Software sales were fairly quiet in Japan this week on both releases - nothing big launched - and seasonality. There will be occassional spurts of activity in the rest of October and the first few weeks of November, but aside from five or six titles it looks like a pretty quiet period until the heavy hitters launch one after another from about November 20 to January 20.

In addition to the games above Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 6 (PSP), Pokemon Black / White (DS), Wii Sports Resort (Wii), Nintendogs + Cats (3DS), and Gears of War 3 (X360) should end up in the final data as well.
With Dark Souls, Tales of Xilia, Gears of War 3, and Dragon Quest Collection really fading this week and only minor software releasing for the week, hardware sales should be down just about across the board in Japan. There just isn't that much coming for the next few weeks either besides AKB1, Kirby, Final Fantasy Type 0 and a couple others. Monster Hunter 3DS, Vita, Mario 3DLand, Mario Kart, Zelda, Itadaki Street Wii, Ace Combat, Final Fantasy XIII and other fairly big titles / events are all coming much later in the year still. The holiday season should see an impressive ramp up, but through about November 20 there isn't a whole lot coming that looks real big.
By mid-October it looks like the 3DS will have sold through about 2m units in Japan. Sony's Vita does not launch until December, and so by the time Vita launches the 3DS could be closing in on, or just past 3m units. With a user base advantage of that size 3DS titles should substantially outsell Vita titles during the December - January peak of the Japanese video game industry. Since the Japanese industry is fairly starved of hits right now, we're 75% through the year and only two games have sold over 500,000 units, software sales for major titles could be enormous as Japanese customers have not spent much money on games yet. As recently as last year, 22 games topped 500,000 units in Japan with seven titles over 1m units. Look for a review of the Japanese industry 9 months in to 2011 vs. 9 months in to 2010 in the next preview when full data is available for comparison.

I dont think people really understand that nintendo has made a power house with their franchises. Just the pure announcement of super smash brothers on the 3DS without gameplay, a trailer, or even info about it made people go apeshit. Im not saying the vita games will sell badly, but nintendo has made such a safety net with their games, I dont think anyone can beat their software sales totals as a publisher.
ps3 have the best games.
This is the part where everyone complains about him saying 3DS titles will outsell Vita titles in holidays even if everyone knows that is indeed going to happen. :-P
