Famitsu Outs New Nintendo 3DS Peripheral

by Keith Sadler, posted on 07 September 2011 / 2,562 Views

Japanese game magazine Famitsu recently revealed a preview for Monster Hunter 3D, to be played on Nintendo’s 3DS. Included with the article was news of a new peripheral. AndriaSang interviewed Monster Hunter series supervisor Ryozo Tsujimoto who said the peripheral was a “secret weapon” that made playing Monster Hunter on your 3DS feel like playing Monster Hunter on your Wii. (Which earned a respectable 9.1 from our reviewer.) Initial reports suggested the device stuck out of the side, but new information from AndriaSang suggests it’s more like a cradle. It’s officially called the Officially the "Kakuchou Slide Pad," or "Expansion Slide Pad,"

AndriaSang also says:

It's unclear if Nintendo made the device specifically for Monster Hunter 3G, but the device is introduced in Famitsu's reveal article on the new 3DS Monster Hunter game.

The peripheral also helps players get a firm grip on their 3DS when slaying monsters, says Ryozo Tsujimoto.

Monster Hunter 3G is scheduled for release at year’s end and will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show next week. The slide pad expansion is, as of this writing, without a release date.

UPDATE: Here are some images from the magazine article in question.

I feel as Nintendo trolled me hard for getting a 3DS early; twice.

When you're at the point where you have to add a second R shoulder button onto your peripheral because it makes it impossible to use the original R shoulder button, you should probably rethink your design. Or maybe realize that the whole thing is pretty pointless to begin with and the 3DS operates just fine with a single pad.

God that's ugly

._. I know that some people complains that the 3DS needs a second pad, it's a nice feature and it seems helpful for this game. But the design is horrible at best, i mean the 3DS with this thing it doesn't looks like a handheld device... Also, if it's only for Monster Hunter it's okay since probably it will be shipped alongside the game but think if some games requires the second pad the people who have already a 3DS will be mad since they have to put more money onto the console. If later a new design comes with the second pad the early adopters will be mad too, so it's not an easy situation here...

But early adopters should expect a more desirable version of their purchase, otherwise they did not make an informed purchase.

Couldn't you also play MH3 on Wii with the Wiimote/Nunchuk combo? 'Cos if yes, that's just a single control stick as well... Plus the PSP MH games made do with its single nub, right? So why the sudden need for such an awkwardly designed addon? Also, Monster Hunter for 3DS what the heck! O_O It'll be unstoppable now, with Mario, Mario Kart, MH... and that's without even mentioning the eventual Pokemon. Oh dear.

I feel sorry for the 3DS. It's just so sad to see Nintendo making so many mistakes. I mean it should've had a second "circle pad" to begin with. That peripheral is just so bulky and ugly. Might as well release a 3DS Lite and add the second analog under the face buttons since we know that's what will end up happening.

oniyide (on 07 September 2011)

im just gonna wait until, Ninty gets the kinks out. Is MH the only game that will use this?? Will other devs use it too?? Alot of variables

DeadEye (on 07 September 2011)

To me it doesn't look good. And how much weight will it add and how will it affect the portability of the 3DS? This just doesn't seem like a good item. Not too mention it is completly pointless as 3DS doesn't need, nor did it ever need, a second circle pad.

hagelt18 (on 07 September 2011)

When I heard about this I started looking all over my 3DS to see where the hell they would put the expansion. I really think they should have thought about that ahead of time. I do really enjoy using the touch screen for camera movement, but one thing I can admit is that you lose the ability to press the R button (if you are right handed) while using the stylus for camera control. With dual analog your pointer finger is free to press the R button quite easily.

.... wtf? There isn't even a use for a second pad, use the bottom screen as a camera slider... problem solved.... the only use is for TPS/FPS... and god knows that's not what the 3DS was made for or what its audience expect of it...

Oh, Nintendo, how have you failed to understand your own success so quickly? And Capcom, if single analogue was good enough for the PSP version, why is there any need for a second stick now?

Moonhero (on 08 September 2011)

I don't understand all the complaining. It's nice that they are making new options for their system. And this is a large title coming with it.

blunty51 (on 08 September 2011)

Proof that money makes you drunk. They were on top of the world with the Wii and DS, then look what they did.

reviniente (on 07 September 2011)

That boat accessory is the ugliest thing since the SEGA CD add-on. I'm surprised 3DS owners are willing to pay to be humilliated like this.

MARCUSDJACKSON (on 07 September 2011)

Ninty's market is different from Sony's which is why Sony needed the second analog. 3ds fits everything but shooters with out this add on which is why they don't need it, but i do like having more options.

brendude13 (on 07 September 2011)

Nintendo just seem to be making one huge mistake after another. Are people now going to have to buy this unpractical, ugly and most probably expensive peripherals to play certain games? What are Nintendo thinking?!

kthsdlr (on 07 September 2011)

I'm normally a sucker for peripherals but I'm not sure about this one.

Tammi (on 07 September 2011)

hmm...sounds kinda weird. Is this going to be Nintendo's big surprise?

greenmedic88 (on 07 September 2011)

A second analog stick should have been in the original design. There was a chorus of gamers saying something to the same effect before it even entered production. Better to have it as a developer's interface option and not use it than omit it and then tack on an afterthought peripheral that the majority of developers won't use without bundling it with their game for Nintendo. Portability takes a big hit; as do all existing cases and skins.

So 01net's rumor was right then. Is the one about Iwata will reveal true ?

SxyxS (on 07 September 2011)

they call it "Ugly Kid Joe" (consodering the tiny size and weight, you can use it like an anchor) PS I knew Nintendo would crawl back into the core gamers S.as soon as the casual gamers got bored.Nintendo IMO you"ve lost to much credibility for a 5 year casual Gamer success now hard times are waiting for U.

Kellie614 (on 07 September 2011)

Hm. Looks neat.
