Heavy Iron Devs: PS Vita Launch Will Be a Car Wreck

by Alex Co, posted on 16 August 2011 / 2,344 Views

According to Heavy Iron Studios' Lyle Hall and Matthew Seymour, Sony will be launching the PlayStation Vita into a market that has fundamentally changed since the success of mobile devices and the device is likely headed for a costly and doomed launch.

Hall and Seymour believe the handheld is over-priced. Not only that, but that consumers have already made it clear that they are no longer willing to pay for devices that only do one thing.

Hall had this to say regarding the matter:

If people aren't willing to pay $249 for a Nintendo 3DS why would they pay $299 for Vita? People don't want to carry more than one thing in their pocket, that’s why Android and iPhone have done so well, they are the devices of choice, they offers multiple functions outside of gaming

Matthew Seymour, who has worked for 2K Games and Microsoft in a career spanning 20 years, was a bit more "colorful" in his assessment.

With all due respects to Sony and Vita, it's a car wreck. And how about Xperia Play? I'd love to pull up the numbers on that.

While it's easy to peg the PlayStation Vita purely as a games platform, keep in mind that the handheld can and will play audio, video and will let you use social services. Will it do it as well as tablet devices? That remains to be seen, but the Heavy Iron staffers seem to have forgotten that Sony's upcoming handheld can do more than just play games.

Do you think Hall and Seymour are right? Did Apple and Android devices just "kill" gaming handhelds?

Who and what the F--- is heavy iron? BTW-as long as people are so stupid to pay 600$ adn more for (almost the same) mobile year after year after year 250$ aren"t too much for a handheld you buy once. And you can really play with the Vita because of the 2 analog sticks and not only the cheap touchscreen feeling you have with mobiles and pads.

mantlepiecek (on 16 August 2011)

PS Vita is $249 isn't it? These guys clearly don't know much about what they are talking about.

Darth Naner (on 16 August 2011)

Wi-fi version will be $249. The 3G version will indeed cost $299, and that's the version that competes with the iPhones and Androids of the world.

Never heard of these guys, then again why would I have? Lol! I don't really take into consideration what reviewers, critics and so called "experts" say on a product. I mean I look out for interesting technology that interests me and applies to my way of life and as far as I'm concerned the PSVita fits right in for me. I'm also lucky enough to own the android powered Galaxy S but I use that mostly as my mp3, texting and quick browsing/ youtube videos. I only ever game on it if I have no other choice lol. In saying that i would rather use a portable dedicated gaming device for gaming (duhh!), videos and brows than my fone since phone battery don't last as long as portable consoles when doing the same activities.

Wagram (on 16 August 2011)

The only articles VGChartz posts about the Vita is bashing ones. Are it's days numbered? The 3DS failed so will the Vita! PS Vita launch will fail due to devs no one knows or cares about said so! Has the Vita lost its best advantage? Post something not against it for a change. and it's $249.99 not $299.99

Xen (on 16 August 2011)

ROFL. 1) Who? Developer of what? 2) Somehow the whole gaming community was impressed.

Zlejedi (on 16 August 2011)

LoL overpriced at 250$ ? Somehow everyone had his jaw on the floor when Sony annouced price on E3.

teigaga (on 16 August 2011)

1. Success is contextual and im sure sony will consider the Vita a success it goes on to sell more than 50m+ in the next 5 years. The market for such devices may have reduced but it still exist. 2. the vita aint $299 lol

theprof00 (on 16 August 2011)

The owner of the handheld gaming market will be the one with the killer apps. Apple has a dominant hold over the casuals with games like angry birds, fruit ninja, etc, and has a fairly decent hold over core gamers who are willing to sacrifice something to be mobile. 3DS simply has no games worth playing. Remember the DS explosion? Nintendogs. Nintendo doesn't have anything with that kind of popularity right now. It's really all about whether Vita is able to have a game that is really worth playing. FF7 Remake maybe :D Sony should finance that. Also, don't forget that 3g is capable of making internet calls for free. So while it may not be a full phone, you will be able to make calls if you pay for the 3g.

They clearly fail to point out that both the 3DS and PSV can do more then just play games. While gaming is their main focus both systems can do much more.

I ask you to please remove this article from the website. It does not state anything productive or accurate so why waste Space? Please add better articles and not trash like this.

kayoss (on 16 August 2011)

Yeah its alot cheaper to buy a tablet (sarcasm). $500 dollars + contract. I think if I want to play games i will stick to a dedicated gaming console.

AverageAsian (on 16 August 2011)

The success or the failure of the PSV will depend on 1) the games and 2) what the device can do outside of gaming.

scottie (on 16 August 2011)

Aren't people tired of predicting that mobile phones will dome the portable games market?

hagelt18 (on 16 August 2011)

I think the xperia play is evidence that anyone who really cares about video games isn't going to buy a phone to play games, even if it is catered towards gaming. People who want good games will buy gaming systems because that is where the good games are going to be.

MRKs (on 16 August 2011)

@mantlepleck Yeah but 249$ it's the wi-fi version not the 3G one (wich is 299$).

sepoer (on 16 August 2011)

I'm not put my phone or psp or 3ds on my pocket. I had a litle bag, and I can carry my psp, 3ds, blackberry, charger. I don't use my phone for a gaming, why? As a gamer I know what best for me.

:VN: (on 27 December 2011)

"People don´t want to carry more than one thing in their pockets", also most people just want some kind of distraction, while on a train, bus etc. without giving importance to the quality or depth of such experiences. Tablets and smartphones provide that but, what they fail to provide is a dedicated gaming experience for someone who really is into video gaming. Sure there are some well done apps that kill some occasional boredom ( like playing drums while riding the subway or making yourself a street artist, drawing in your iPad), but being able to have a gaming experience equivalent to the ones you can have in a home console, wherever you are, only with dedicated portable gaming devices. Company´s need to clarify the consumer and not trying to sell portable consoles as equivalent´s to smartphones and/or Tablets.

Teo (on 16 August 2011)

LOL a good article for the 3DS and a bad article for the Vita posted at the same time. So classy Nintendo fanboys.

Dgc1808 (on 16 August 2011)

I think they're wrong.

kowenicki (on 16 August 2011)

Partially correct... What is it the sony crowd usually say...? US isnt the world. Well guess what... that is more true in pricing than anything. In the UK for the 3G version you will pay £280, that is $455, no way thats going to sell well, in Europe it is 290 Euros which is $426, so slighlty better but not great, this amidst an employment meltdown in much of mainland Europe.

Alby_da_Wolf (on 16 August 2011)

Portable console + cheap cellphone = cheaper than just buying a smartphone + proper controls for games + always having the cellphone's battery charged should you really need it. Digital cameras market is still growing, despite every smartphone offering a camera too, and Swiss Army Knife didn't disrupt the market of normal knives. PC is a far better gaming platform than smartphones, but it didn't kill consoles.

i thought gamescon was great :)

oni-link (on 16 August 2011)

With the risk of being down voted; I say that what the developers are saying is what I have been trying to say all along. Just look at BB and one can see the allure that the tablets and smartphones have not just for core gaming but for casuals and mainstream in general. Granted they have not offered anything as deep as what some DS, 3DS, PSP games has offered; doesn't mean those types of games are not coming!!! C'mon, Nintendo offered a glasses-free 3D gaming device with 128MB RAM, PICA200 GPU, dual 266mhz ARM11 CPU, WiFi, 2GB flash memory etc and it still wasn't enough. I think Nintendo cutting the price of the 3DS was a great idea and increased their chance of remaining significant in portable gaming once again. Sony doesn't have that pedigree line and despite the PSV being more powerful than the 3DS; it lacks the punch in terms of specs and capabilities to many tablets and smartphones currently on the market. UNLESS SONY CUTS THE PRICE TO $200 the PSV is gonna have to fight for it's life immediately after launch!!!!

pierce_the_veil (on 16 August 2011)

Wow you are dense, no developer is going to take advantage of a 4th gen(year) phone or tablet since half the install base is using the first gen, not to mention the controls make a game that requires any kind of precision impossible and their development budget are way too small for them to make a decent game anyways.

So yes it does mean it's not coming, phone games suck they are flash level and they aren't going to get anywhere near a full fledged handheld game.

PS Vita will be just fine. As for 3DS it just need good games.

MarioParty619 (on 16 August 2011)

i think these guys are overacting! vita will do great :)

UltimateUnknown (on 16 August 2011)

I think price is going to be a problem, even at $249/299. And now with the price drop, the 3ds will capture whatever is left of the market after andriod/ios. So vita will probably be for the hardest of the hardcore Sony fans, who I don't know can help make it break even. It also doesn't help that the Vita is made to be a portable HD console, which makes it look like you have an alternate cheaper way to play the games. That said, I could see Vita eventually finding a niche market in Japan, probably not over in Europe/America. But lets not count it out yet.

Zlejedi (on 16 August 2011)

Yeah tell dedicated PSP gamers that they should go for android games they will laught in your face.

The GameStop near my house had 0 pre-orders for the Vita when I was last there...

The_Botman (on 16 August 2011)

$249 regular, $299 built in wi-fi

pierce_the_veil (on 16 August 2011)

$249 for wifi, $300 for 3G (which also has wifi)

I found funny the author point out the developers appear to dismiss the fact theVita can also work as a media player and social network client. If Vita cannot hold as a gaming machine, which should be its best feature, it is pathetical to think it can compete against iOS where the latter is clearly sfronver.

Tammi (on 16 August 2011)

The "failure" of the 3DS could have been due to a combination of things. The bad economy and lack of games at lauch could have been part of the problem. Or perhaps people just don't like the 3D idea. Price is probably not the entire reason.

Zlejedi (on 16 August 2011)

3DS failure is wholy a matter of price and lack of games.

z101 (on 16 August 2011)

I don't think that Vita has a slighest chance on the western market. If the 3DS gets a new Monster Hunter game, Vita has not even a chance in Japan.
