Sony Acquires Sucker Punch

Today Sony announced that they have acquired their long time partner Sucker Punch Productions. Financial terms of the arrangement weren’t disclosed.

In case you don’t know, Sucker Punch are the masterminds behind the inFamous and Sly Cooper franchises. The deal will mean that all future games created by Sucker Punch will be exclusive to Sony. It’s not really surprising that this deal has taken place, after all, Sucker Punch has been creating great PlayStation exclusives for years now, and the relationship between the companies will be strong.

Shuhei Yoshida, president, SCE WWS, had this to say regarding the deal:

Sucker Punch Productions is one of the most highly acclaimed development studios in the industry and we have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the company for over 12 years. We are delighted to officially welcome them to the SCE family. The addition of Sucker Punch to SCE WWS reiterates our dedication to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform. With one of the strongest exclusive software lineups in the PS3's history, combined with the diverse, innovate content in the works for PlayStation Vita, consumers have a lot to be excited about this year.

Brian Fleming, managing partner at Sucker Punch has also shared his opinions regarding the deal:

We've enjoyed an incredible relationship with Sony that has allowed us to combine our creative design capabilities with their guidance to make some of the best franchises to hit the PlayStation platforms. Equally important, the relationship with SCE has provided us the flexibility and trust to take creative risks and invent new properties. As a part of the Sony Computer Entertainment group we look forward to introducing more innovative content and providing consumers with exciting, new interactive experiences.

The deal shows that Sony is prepared to buy developers if they make great PlayStation games; having previously purchased Media Molecule – creators of the LittleBigPlanet franchise.

A good news day for PlayStation fans then?

I though that they were already owned by SONY :D. I think this is for the better to prevent another “Insomniac” ¬_¬ InFamous 1 and 2 ROCK!!!!

@sales2099 yeah like Insomniac Games - they stayed exclusive...

jkudlacz (on 02 August 2011)

Actually they did not, SONY does not own INSOMNIAC GAMES and they already announced that they are working on a Multiplatform game.

And it isn't money to the trash, they are going to recover the money with greater margin on the SW and won't have to put out money to support the developer in the same way.

@sales2099 that doesn't mean that they couldn't make a new IP that mutliplatform i know it's money wasted but what if they went to create games for all systems?

SONYisBP (on 03 August 2011)

That is like M$ buying Bunji. Besides i still do not understand why it is a good idea to companies to develop for just one system. not to mention 360 sales damn near always exceed ps3 sales in software, especially big titles.

kain_kusanagi (on 02 August 2011)

It amazes me how much money Sony dumps into exclusives. Maybe it will help them next gen, but right now people seem happy with COD, AC, and all the other multiplatform games.

DonFerrari (on 02 August 2011)

I like having a plethora of exclusives to play this and the next generation.

I would rather Sony spend the money on exclusives then on advertising for 1 game a year.

They all ready make Sony exclusives.....so its just money wasted to actually acquire them

Play4Fun (on 02 August 2011)

What are you talking about, if another company came to them with a great offer, or if they decided to start making games for XBOX of Wii there would be nothing that SONY could do to stop them for doing so, now with this purchase Sucker Punch stays in HOUSE and all profits made by any of their game sales go to SONY. Great deal, especially since SONY will drop PS3 price in 2 weeks and it will allow them to make more money on inFamous 2 game sales.
