PS4? Xbox 720? No Thanks.
by Stew Shearer, posted on 18 July 2011 / 19,926 ViewsIf you were to listen to the rumor mill, you’d be told that the next console generation is just on the horizon. Then again, the rumor still perpetually insists that we’re on the verge of a Final Fantasy VII remake and we all know how that’s gone.
But I digress, they might have a point with this one. This console generation has been going for awhile now. My PS3, the victim of constant college dorm moves, has long since had its gloss replaced by scuffs and my Wii has moved beyond its position as a dust magnet and has transitioned into cobweb collection. The only reason my Xbox 360 still wears the sheen (metaphorically speaking, I bought the black matte slim) of newness is because I’ve had it for less than a year.
Even with the physical age of the hardware currently on the market, I still question if we need new hardware even this far in their life cycles. With half a decade of current gen games behind me I still find myself consistently impressed by the visual achievements of new titles. I have yet to come across a game that could have been better if the hardware was stronger… outside of the Wii library of course.
In fact, while I’m still holding out on fully judging the Wii U, I find it telling that Nintendo opted only to bring the machine’s visuals up to par with its current competitors. Granted, this may again just be an example of Nintendo trying to save money by doing new things with old technology. Even so, maybe they’re also recognizing as I hope Microsoft and Sony do, that there are more important things than raw power.
Versatility, more than visuals, should be the guiding light of console makers.
The biggest reason for new consoles in the past was to expand on the skill set of the machines already on the market. The current generation comparatively, comes with the built in ability to change and grow with time. People like to complain about the frequent firmware updates that come with the PS3 experience, but each one represents a change and in many cases growth. When the PS3 first launched trophies weren’t a part of its repertoire. Now they’re considered a practical necessity. The Xbox 360 and the Wii have both gone through comparable changes with time, expanding on their capabilities and in turn stemming the cyclical necessity of a new console every few years.
If you need further evidence of the importance of adaptive gaming machines, just look at the PC. The sole reason PC gaming survives and to an extent thrives is because of the platform’s ability to change depending on the needs of game makers, markets and gamers themselves. The ability to create and use mods alone is more than enough to keep many gamers hooked to the mouse and keyboard even if a console might often be more convenient.
I will admit there other reasons that I don’t want new consoles any time soon. Keeping up with new hardware can be incredibly expensive. More than that though is just the fact that the “it’s been five years we need a new console” mode of thinking is just plain outdated. More than that though, I just have a desire to see what developers can do with the current consoles even if they’re aging. It can be nice to have powerful new tools, but in many cases some of the best works of many mediums were born within in the confines of limited resources. Compare A New Hope to The Phantom Menace, Master of Puppets to St. Anger, or Chrono Trigger to Final Fantasy XIII. The measure of a game falls well beyond its shininess, and even then, there’s still plenty of glimmer go around.

"I have yet to come across a game that could have been better if the hardware was stronger" I think the difference in BF3's PC version vs the consoles proves you wrong. The only reason you're not noticing issues is that most games now are made on consoles first. If other devs did what DICE did with BF3 you'd make an article begging for their release as aparently all you care about are graphics. Wholly ignoring the potential major advances in AI and environment.

Wow, agree whole heartedly.. Im and older gamer.. i was a kids when the NES came out and changed the world.. Seems to me im reading more articles at VGchartz written by 20 somethings that were kids when the PS2 came out... I feel they may be lacking the experience to write a weel rounded article because anyone knows games written on PC first often have a much higher quality. Anyone remember the old saying that better hardware requirements are constantly driven by gaming ? That was from a pc perspective - but the console industry has convince some of these writers thats not true - when console makers are ONLY slowing down refresh cycles to maximise profits !!

More than lacking the experience of what old systems, I think they lack the educational requirements. I feel as if these new filler articles have done little to no research on their exact topics, and I feel that is a perfect sign of adolescence. But the sad thing is, that these people are not teenagers, they are grown up. So I'm only left to conclude that A) They have forgotten everything they learned in college or B) they haven't gone to college. If I wrote this argumentative paper, I would get scolded for the fact that my argument brought near close to nothing of what the other side would say. One sided papers are shit. This is a perfect example of that. There is almost always at least 4 sides to a issue, with 2 of them almost always being the general focus.

I usually don't point it out when I see a bad article, but I have to say: Speak for yourself. I would love me some new tasty hardware. ANY gamer would be excited by the prospect, except of course if money (not gaming) is your main consideration. And this: "I have yet to come across a game that could have been better if the hardware was stronger", is an absolute joke. You should consider that the reason you find the Wii lacking is that you have the HD consoles to compare it to. In your naive state you have nothing to compare the HD consoles to so you somehow feel that there is no need for improvement.

REGARDING NEXT GEN QUALITY: Aside from stunning graphics, (AMD's) Robison is quoted as saying that the next-generation console from Microsoft will boast A.I. and physics capabilities that will allow for every pedestrian in a games like Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row 'to have a totally individual mentality'. That means no more of the mob mentality that sees everyone just running away screaming, each character will do something different.

We should be able to downvote articles and comments instead of just comments. The quality of the articles in vgchartz is getting worse every single day. Everyday I feel less inclined of visiting this website because there is nothing good to read.

"while I’m still holding out on fully judging the Wii U, I find it telling that Nintendo opted only to bring the machine’s visuals up to par with its current competitors." sigh, the Wii U's CPU and GPU is more powerful than the 360's and PS3's. Why cant you people get that through your thick skulls. *facepalm*
- +14
that doesn't mean its powerful enough to show a significant improvement in graphics for some reason certain people just don't get it
- 0
It had better be more powerful than the PS3 and 360's CPU and GPU. They have been on the market for about 5 and 6 years respectively.
- +2
Proof that it will be stronger? I haven't seen a confirmed spech list of the WiiU at all. The only thing that has been "confirmed," and even that might be a hoax, is the dev kit. And dev kits are always stronger than the actual console your making the game on.
- 0
dev kit stronger than the console? maybe i missed something but how could the games work on the console if so?
- +2
The dev kits are strong than the actual console because you are performing two operations during development: running the game(program[s]) & creating the game (another program[s]). That equals needing more power. And you are leaving a large amount of RAM around when you create video game, then erase and polish. You get it now?
- 0
Why would Nintendo use PS3 and 360 versions of third party games to demonstrate WiiU hardware like they did at E3?
- 0
And you probably were thinking the same thing in 2004 I see plenty of ways current gen games could improve with more power from better AI, larger levels with greater draw distance, higher framerate and resolution would help fast action games and racers tremendously.

Wii collecting dust remark: check. Wii U is underpowered: check. PS360 graphics are somehow great even when Wii U will render at 4 times the quality and is considered underpowered: check. Wow. This article doesn't just have FAIL written all over it. It screams FAIL from the top of its lungs! VGChartz is going downhill fast with these filler "articles" lately.
Again, as usual, after reading the top rated comments, the general consensus is that graphics are what make the game, and bring it on, bigger better more!!! But You people still fail to realize that gaming is not what it used to be, not because graphics are better or worse, but because game play is less and less the focus, and graphics and polish are more and more. For my money, I love a "pretty-game" but when it comes down to "The most fun I've had with a game" it's generally not the best looking, almost the exact opposite. Yes of course new hardware and beefy specs are great and fun to look forward to, but gameplay has always been and will always be the center, the core, of what gaming is about, not the the pretty colors!
It's all about dev effort. They can still make awesome games with all current gen consoles. The only thing is when a new gen emerges, people get their gears on and bring out their best again. It also happens mid to end cycle, but the excitement is more there in beginning of cycle. Think of MGS4 for example.
Dev effort I agree if big, but the truth is Devs are saying they are pushing current gen consoles to their limit. Yes current games look pretty good overall, but many of us are getting into the mentality that consoles makers push. Console makers are in the business to maximize their consoles life spans at all cost to maximise cash.. not to maximize quality ( which makes them spend more money - see dwindling bank account ) .. This is why PC gaming was always great.. PC hardware improved much faster and devs that make games for pc 1st often make games that shine in al levels of quality. SO while I agree with you that Dev effort is absolute MUST to have quality gaming.. I'll say when you increase hardware abilities you greatly increase what DEVS can do with that effort alot..

I for one cannot wait until the next generation of home consoles. That's not to say that I'm not greatly enjoying my Wii and to a lesser degree my PS3, similarly how I was ready for the 3DS despite loving my DS.
I wonder how much game will cost by then?? :S It is supposed that as time passes, a game that was a pain to make and cost lots of money, that game will become easier to make and cheaper. I hope I am right, because if games begin to cost 100 bucks my wallet will be depressed.
I think it's to soon for the new consoles as well but both the 360 and the PS3 suffer from lack of RAM big time. It seems that developers spend to much time and money trying to work around this problem on many of todays high profile console games.
I completely agree with you on this. Devs need room, and that's kind of a direct analogy. Devs really don't have much room to put information, cause the RAM is the size of a fucking pin head.
- +2
The fact that DEVS are trying to find work-arounds to make better games shows the limitations of this generations hardware are becoming taxing. Its time for the next gen. Console makers want us to beleive console lives should last 10 yrs.. Only because it cost them less money... Otherwise why arent you playing on a PS1 now ? I'll tell you why.. because HARDWARE IMPROVEMENTS ALWAYS IMPROVE GAMING ..

And Sony lowered PS3's memory specs before launch d/t the high cost of the console.. Oddly, they put a powerful cpu into a console that cant really use the full power of the cell processor.. PS3's cpu is more powerful then 360's, but its been proven this advantage is nullified becausew 360's GPU is more powerful then 360's and 360's memory is slightly better due to the built in on die memory on 360's GPU which allows for much faster caching.. My whole point is.. if memory constraints are a problem .. the only thing to really make it better is just bite the bullet and show us the next gen.. They dont hold back new gen consoles for our benefits.. they do it for their wallets..

Even so, maybe they’re also recognizing as I hope Microsoft and Sony do, that there are more important things than raw power." Nintendo realised there were more important things than raw power six or seven years ago--that's where the DS and Wii came from. That being said, I agree with your sentiments. I can happily wait a couple of years for a new Xbox, though I do look forward to Wii U. Without the third party support, and with its momentum rapidly dropping, Wii will never have its potential realised. If Nintendo can fix those issues with Wii U, then that machine could stay well supported on the market for more than 5 years, which would be good to see.
Studios need time to prepare for next gen consoles, these ain't your older brothers consoles anymore, and devs are still working hard right now to get the best from this generation. 2013 is a good date, maybe early 2014.
I like this site, but these editorials are all rubbish. Stop hiring 15 year old fanboys to write this crap. Gamers should never be complacent. If we were, we'd all still have 16 bit graphics and generic platformers. The PS3 and 360 may still be impressive, but so weren't the PS2, GC, and Xbox... until the 360 came along. We have so many more improvements to be made, and the fact that you don't know what they are is just ignorant. Why stifle progress because you are content? Today's consoles can barely do true 1080P, and AI has a long way to go too. Texture loading is annoying, load times could be improved, and 60fps should be the standard, not 30fps. You never know what you are missing until you have it.
The human eye can barely EVER tell the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps, however if it drops below 30 fps it becomes noticeable. I personally have a gaming rig that does Crysis on max settings and Warhead close to max, and my fps on just about every game is damn near 100 (lowest drop was on The Last Remnant at 45.2 but that is apparently some issue I have to fix cuz the game is slightly buggy). The only reason the 360 initially seemed impressive was because of so-called HD (many games still sub 700p). This gen does have life in it but I see nothing wrong with an announcement for a 2013 release on either of the console makers. Journey, Uncharted 3, FF Vs XIII, The Last Guardia, to name a few.
It's not a matter of being complacent, because the quality is there and continues to impress. In all honesty if you cannot stand consoles then just game on your PC and leave any console gaming forum/article. Personally I have a pretty damn good PC (thank you Disolitude and the rest of the knowledgeable VGC PC users for advice on building it) but I also have a PS3 and I jump between them. On my PS3 I am playing InFamous 2 (2nd playthrough on hard/evil), Valkyria Chronicles, Wipeout HD/Fury, SuperStardust HD, Uncharted 2 (multiplayer mainly), KZ3 (multi and SP second time). Meanwhile on my PC I am on AVA (alliance of valliant arms, great free FPS if you ever liked counterStrike), TF2, Zombie Panic: Source, Forsaken World (MMO), BF2, L4D, etc. I consider myself a true gamer and I enjoy what each system offers me at different times, and when one system doesn't give me what I want at that point in time, I jump to the other. I welcome the next gen but I am not stressing over it nor am I clamoring for it.

you are right and by the way the ps3 and 360 can barely do 720 not 1080 res. but all the sony and xbox lovers out there think there is nothing wrong with this gen of consoles. here is a problem conosles are dying but pc gaming is growing and reason being pc's have now advanced to where you can get a pc or have one built for the same price as a ps3 and 360 and have graphics 100X better then the consoles. and the display is always 1080 res plus and fps is always 60 or way more. alot of those fanboys though will come up with the same old story "but you gotta upgrade every year to keep it looking good" which is false i built my pc in 2009 in feb, with one year old tech and guess what ive yet to have even the new games slow it down and ive yet to add anything to it. What people compare their consoles with is 6 year old pc's which is what walmart and best buy sells which is the core 2 duo's so if you know what your doin you shouldnt have to do much if you build or buy the right pc for 6 years and max out the graphics for the majority of those years.
as for the next gen consoles the Wii U to me looks amazing and guess what you can only do so much now with graphics before they all look the same which the wii u will look better then the ps3 and 360 but when the ps4 and 720 hit the market they will all look the same but what will seperate them will be controls and if sony keeps the current ps one controller modified a little i kinda doubt people will flock to it. xbox will more then likely try and be more kinect which from what believe isnt a good thing for a console. at least nintendo is taking a risk on changing controlers.

Honestly, I can hardly wait for new consoles with new and improved methods of play. One thing I will point out is that the console industry is currently selling fairly low, it looks like it is in need of the start of a new cycle.
Of course, most gamers would like to see the new console generation. Who doesn't like beautiful graphics? The problem is that we don't want to pay a fortune for it, and most of us have a huge amount of money invested in the current gen consoles. I've got like 50 games between my PS3, 360, and Wii. Will there be backwards compatibility? Can I download all of my PSN/XBLA games to my new console? Personally I would love to have the next generation of consoles, but I would rather wait for them to do it right and be affordable as well.
nerds are always expecting the latest and more advanced technology even if it is yet to be fully cocked. And weeks later they become all upset because things aren't working so well or they were expecting more and whatsoever. I do agree with this article at the point that a new hardware isn't needed, there are so many ways to improve what you find on the market at this moment (except for Wii).
Um, what is wrong with you guys? This is an OPINION PIECE! If you don't like it, that doesn't automatically make it a "bad article." Geez....
I like the fact that I can go into my local games store and know that I can look in any section and buy/play any game. This gen is the first time I've been able to do that and I want it to last as long as possible. Like the author, I still find myself consistently being impressed by the current hardware. Next gen can wait, as far as I'm concerned.
You hit the nail on the head. I put money that those from the ninty camp waiting for the Wii U are the ones who thumbs down you OR the PC enthusiats who have no business being in a console discussion. BTW I tried offsetting it by putting my thumbs up for you. Right now there isn't much higher to go than Avatar level CG's used in actual gameplay which would be nice but the amount of power needed in a system and development costs would sky rocket. In the end it comes down to the games and this gen the HD consoles have definitely delivered to the core gamer. Hell even the aged Wii has had some nice gems that don't need graphical upgrades because the gameplay is the meat of them. Personally I will not get the Vita till a few months down the line because I want to wait for at least the first hardware revision or some real blockbuster titles (whichever comes first). The 3DS is not on my list unless it gets a Chrono Trigger remake (hell even a TWEWY remake).

Good luck on getting developers to make all their games on full 1080p for the wii U. Since the cost to make a game is really high, adding more time and money to get games on 1080p will be futile. Why? Wii U is a new console and developers are cautious about investing a lot of money on a console that have not prove itself, second the wii U really didnt introduce anything new to the table (except for a the controller). Im really skeptical, because for those who already own an xbox or ps3, why would they buy a new console to play game that you can also get for the ps3 or xbox? Nintendo first party games are good, but they are just rehash of the same thing, Nintendo need to come up with something more original.
I saw a post of yours way down below.. The PS3's processor is alittle more powerful then PS3's when devs use all optimizations.. the problem is not PS3's CPU... its PS3's GPU which is not as powerful as 360's. Thats a fact you can research it on google. Also, compared to 360.. PS3's memory bandwidth quality lowered before launch by Sony because it was already too costly. So AGAIN PS3's cell processor -which is more powerful- is bottlenecked by the GPU and memory bandwidth. In essence this means Sony put a sweet engine into a car with a transmission that cant take full adavantage. Basically when you factor in EVERYTHING.. The PS3 is not powerful then the Xbox 360.. and like John Carmack and others have said the 360 is not only as powerful or more then the PS3.. its EASIER to program for.. which is why things get ported from the 360 version first often.. Easier programming to get the same quality means more devs jumping ship..

another low standard article...f from probably just a console only gamer who have never seen what pcs can do.. how do I get a job at writing articles here?.. im not good at english bet i can write the same low standards we have here.
@kfd056: Probably because those are the words Nintendo and many Industry experts are using to describe the Wii U.
Replace "No thanks" with "yes please" and you've got my opinion. All 3 consoles feel old and stale, I want something new.

This article is at the very least honest, fairly unbiased, and somewhat interesting. Most of the comments are neither of the three.
New consoles are needed, at most in one year and a half. And this old platforms are stagnating pc gaming

I feel sorry for the VGC contributors that they need to be berated and picked over. I admit some articles are betten than others but this article is not as bad as the most rated comments would suggest. I would like to thank you on your input and hope that some of the frankly rediculous voted up comments do not put you off from further contributing. It seems you cannot make certain observations without upsetting the status quo. The most uprated comment for example focuses on BF3 but I think it is pretty obvious that the console versions will sell more. Also when I see videos such as the one demonstrating the AI improvements in FM4 I question again why people feel its a problem. Basically the current HD consoles have a lot more to give and the improvements are still yet to come. To compare what a PC game can achieve on a top of the range PC that can take advantage of these improvments versus the console in itself seems to be missing the point. Keep it up!
The thing I think a lot of the readers complaining about the article's quality don't understand is that it is labeled "editorial." It does not claim to be news or fact, but is by definition an opinion piece because that's what editorials are. If the only articles VGChartz had were updates on games, sales etc, we would have very little to read so I'm glad that these "filler" articles come and make people think about the state of gaming.

REGARDING NEXT GEN XBOX... John Carmack says the next Xbox wil be 10 times more powerful then current gen 360/Ps3 hardware.. So much power that it will TRUELY take 10 yrs for them to says "We've done all we can"....Graphics capabilites will be Avatar- like.. AMD's Robison says " next-generation console from Microsoft will boast A.I. and physics capabilities that will allow for every pedestrian in a games like Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row 'to have a totally individual mentality'. That means no more of the mob mentality that sees everyone just running away screaming, each character will do something different ." Wow, after reading this who wants to stay with current GEN ? Not me !! http://www.tomshardware.com/news/AMD-XBox-720-Xbox-720-Avatar-Graphics-Neal-Robison,13095.html http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2007/03/13/next-xbox-720-to-launch-in-2011-2012-according-to-microsoft.htm
Any gamers here who says "Yeah I hope this cycle last longer" is basically fooled right into what console makers want. What do they want ? To make each of their consoles life cycles AS LONG AS POSSIBLE at any cost to maximise profits. Anytime you IMPROVE hardware you drastically increase what game makers are able to do from a quality perspective. Yeah, I ca honestly say I still like playing some older games sometimes, but you know what ? Its just not the same.. New games are almost always better.. they can have a story just as good as any old games - plus tons of new features allowed because of technology, plus they look way cooler and really thats what we all want.. more realism !
The only thing I really want that's missing on PS3 is a decent web browser. Games-wise I've such a huge list of PS3 games I want to play but don't even own yet that if PS4 came out tomorrow it would be 2 years or more before I felt any compelling need to get one.
Totally agree, I do not want a new generation any time soon what we have is functionally doing everything it needs. This generation is also far more adaptive thanks to the internet and what the consumer is willing to accept (move, kinect etc).
I own PS3 and it Still has a lot to tell I own Wii and it s dead I own 360 and didnt have time to play it I own 3DS and it lacks games and power I own PSP and it s so dead too Good article
I figure many don't agree with this article, but I do agree. The PS1 and N64 felt aged to me by the release of the next consoles. Same for the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox. The PS3 and Xbox 360 still feel moderately young to me, however. I feel like they still have much to explore.
Those people complaining that the current gen consoles are holding PC gaming back because developers are now focusing on consoles first need to understand something.... videogames are a BUSINESS first! Developers and publishers don't have an infinite amount of money to dump into R&D and to constantly release games that rely on bleeding-edge hardware like the latest CPUs and GPUs that only a tiny fraction of the general gaming population utilize. The reason why they want the next gen consoles to get here already is because it's probably burning their asses that starting at an entry level of just $200, people can enjoy the exact same games in the comfort of their own living rooms on their big screen tvs in 1080p that the "hardcore" PC gamers have to spend $1,000 or more on hardware just to run the games smoothly or jack the settings up to max. Ironically, once the next generation of consoles is finally here, we'll all be able to enjoy top of the line cutting edge visuals for just $400-$500 tops while they'll have to drop another grand or so just to be able to keep up!
The Wii U is desperately needed because the Wii was underpowered to begin with, but I do agree the 360 and PS3 could last a little longer. I'd say 2014 sounds about right for PS4 and Xbox 720. New hardware is always a good thing, but PS3 and 360 are doing just fine for now.
Oh is this a blog? Because it reads like a blog... sounds like a blog and looks like a blog. VGC needs articles not a person's opinion on why it will/won't be etc.
and this is why a new platform will be annouce before 2012 e3 and show u the rest at e3 cause of new waves of technology is out there for gamers and non gamers
The problem with generations lasting over 5 years is that console manufacturers are reluctant to sell their primary system for $100-$150. The isn't enough of a profit compared to a $300 machine. So unless the generation starts at $600, were stuck with 5-10 year console lifetimes for now. However I see age extending add ons to become standard for future consoles. I.E. Expansion pack (N64), Kinect, expanded hard-drives, maybe even a higher resolution version that can play the same games with upscaled graphics.
And how would your everyday, un-educated, un-pc, gamer install something like a GPU, CPU, or RAM into a console? They would have to remove the previous one, or the system would already need to have empty slots. Soudns stupid.

I disagree with you!! Of course we canplay games in current consoles.. but the gaming panorama is starting to stagnate... look at the games are coming.. uncharted 3, gears 3, halo 4... etc... there's no signs of new ideas .. all is based in games that can sell just by their name... new zones, new weapons, new characters.. is the same game with few issues to make it look better.. And with time counting , the differences with PC are more and more evidents... I think that there are a great audience that demands a change, and new systems can bring it to us
Im looking foward to new hardware, i'd be suprised if any Gamers were'nt excited by the propect of new hardware. The real question is, are we ready to spend another $400-600? Right now, i doubt most people are. But i guess thats why those consoles are'nt comming out for another 2 or so years. By 2014-15, i think most people will be ready to move on and that fits the scedule as massmarket uptake of new consoles doesnt normally doesnt happen till 1-2 years months after release
Man, VgChartz articles seem to love bashing Nintendo recently. Wonder how long it will continue
i just don't get why so many say they don't need a new console atm and they are still impressed with new titles graphics. we don't talk about a release next week so even if im still impressed doesn't mean i will be still impressed end of next year. year uncharted 3, gears of war 3 will all be great but will i think the games on my 360 in two years will be great with its ki/graphics aso.? so yes i still like my 360 and ps3 but i think i won't like them so much in 16 month so for me it would be great to get one successor end of next year and the other one maybe one year later.
"I think the difference in BF3's PC version vs the consoles proves you wrong. The only reason you're not noticing issues is that most games now are made on consoles first. If other devs did what DICE did with BF3 you'd make an article begging for their release as aparently all you care about are graphics. Wholly ignoring the potential major advances in AI and environment." Battlefield 3 isn't even released so it proves nothing yet. Anyway, it seems so far just an average FPS with great technology (IMO Half Life 2 is still best FPS). I doubt most people see any difference between console and PC version. Especially not AI difference, because most people play it at easiest settings, disabling great AI. Of course, AI isn't that important because multiplayer is most important part of the game. And only very few can actually play it at high settings, most play it on PC with console graphics. Highest settings can be probably used by only 0.1% of the PC owners, perhaps even less.
even if new consoles do come out in 2012-2013, I most likly will hold off till 2014-2015, I am still very happy with PS3 and move, and my 360, graphics are great, both have great exclusives, and I cant wait for Mass Effect 3, that will keep me busy for awhile
I'm all for 7G to last a little while longer. I'm having a good time with my PS3.
I believe M$ is the one that is less pressed to release a console right now with the "we didn't peaked yet" and kinect. Sony would really love to have a head start this next generation but the economics need to be good enough (like the_source masterfully analyzed). And Ninty already released their plans, of course. But, on the other hand, M$ IS the most aggressive one, so it can just forget about X360 and go for X720 to preventively counter WiiU. And I sorta expect that.
the only reason PC survives is the failed mentality of gfx>gameplay. also, player mods... the only games that end up being better out of the box are RTS and MMOs on PC.. next gen will be great, every console needs an upgrade i just hope MS is making their first party developers make games for it to have a great launch......
Is someone from VGchartz down voting people's comments because before I commented everyone under talking bad about this article was at least +12.
The author is right. I my phat PS3 with PS2 BC didn't die I would still be playing some PS2 games. Current gen HW has the best rate performances/cost, and it's capable to deliver incredible games. Also, I own one already, I don't feel the need to waste money in a new console. I leave that (money wasting) to the PC users.
I figure many don't agree with this article, but I do agree. The PS1 and N64 felt aged to me by the release of the next consoles. Same for the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox. The PS3 and Xbox 360 still feel moderately young to me, however. I feel like they still have much to explore.
"I have yet to come across a game that could have been better if the hardware was stronger" Although poorly worded and in terrible context, this is about a 95% true statement. Most people think it only involves graphics, but if you can look through your TV screen, you'll know this involves AI, Environments, Inventories, Side quests even all the way down to music. A game that truly challenges the hardware is not one that is shiny, but one that has pure depth. I can only think of a handful of games over all platforms, ever, that have truly challenged their hardware to the fullest. As a gamer, I personally would love to see this potential fulfilled more before this generation is over, but after this amount of time, it's not going to happen so it's time to move on.
This article sounds like it was written by a person with a crappy pc and would not understand how far behind game consoles are. No one is making you upgrade, there are still plenty of peeps playing ps2 still. He can be one of them, plain and simple. Im bored with the consoles, the gfx make me puke. my pc is carrying about all the workload of gaming for me. not to mention $60 for an aged looking game compaired to the same price or cheapr for PC with MUCH better GFX and effects, more bang for the buck.
Have you considered that the reason people are still playing the PS2 is because it has a good library of games that can still be bought for brand new at around $20 and good used games that sell for even less?
The thing PC gamers don't understand is what consoles are all about. They aren't meant to outclass PC's. They are meant to be low budget alternatives to PC's. This is something Sony and Microsoft are just starting to learn again. You guys can spend all day talking about higher resolution, advanced AI and all of that, but unless the gap between consoles and PC's can be comparable to the gap the Super NES and PlayStation, the public in general won't accept having to replace their old consoles with newer, far more expensive ones, especially when the average price of the current HD consoles are #300.

And that's why if you're into the most cutting edge, you should get your fix on a PC, by far. Right now, I'm really happy with StarCraft II's campaign mode, I absolutely love the graphics. Can't wait for more Blizzard.

2013 is the key imo. 12 is to early, there are already to many great titles announced for next year, for a new console to make sense so early. And yes a new generation is needed considering that we are still stuck in 2007, when Crysis 1 was released, no console game has come close graphically, not even Crysis 2, which is the best looking console game to date. Now a new gen does not mean every game will look 10 times better, but it means we don't have to play games in sub HD and with real AA filtering instead of 2x or even 0x. Also games like GTA 5 needs a new gen to do it justice imo. A new gen does not mean the end of the old gen either, i am pretty sure that both PS3 and Xbox 360 is gonna stick around for at least another 3 years after PS4 and NexBox comes. They even gonna get many core tiles, just worse version of them just like it is with PC and consoles today.
Wow reading comments of this article and I couldn't agree more. I wanted to put a down vote or something. Just Delete this article and we'll just act like VGchartz isn't getting worse.
We...don't need new hardware. This is just simple economics. If we DID get a new hardware gen now, get ready for even MORE expensive dev costs and possibly even higher prices for games. Heck, would it be out of the question to think new stuff might cost $500-$600 out of the starting gate due to necessity? I'm not in a rush to get new hardware, and neither should anybody else. Read the memo: you will be waiting awhile longer. And thank BUDDHA for that
i don't know but there alot of technology out there that they could bring to the tv market because i don't think they want one console in a home in the future i think it about putting a console on every tv in your home so there might be a annoucement from microsoft or ps before e3 .i mean live tv of your choice open up a new wave of tv like show apps that have all the live internet tv of your choice like hulu direct tv .stream direct . i mean the list goes on and on i would choose stream direct cause u just pay 1 time a fee of $54.99 and never pay again u have a account so if u have 5 xbox u could use that same account on that 5 xbox .that going to be new on the console market . . full web not that fake slow 1. im taking about the pc version. dvd music and games. 3g .android.face time chat text and other new entertainment . tv will be the focus trust me
I've yet to comment on this site even though I'm on it a good deal of my internet surfing time. Be warned, this is going to be a long post but don't worry. I don't post frequently. Though the article could have been written better I have to agree with many of the points. This generation of gaming still has plenty of life in it even if the graphics potential is nearly saturated. With this economy, not everyone has $500 or $600 dollars to spend on a new console, and with the tech getting better and better that's what we're going to have to spend. Just look at the 3DS. Even the handheld goliath that is Nintendo couldn't stuff a $300 dollar gadget down people's throats. Does getting a shiny new coat of visuals really justify that kind of purchase when the current gen has yet to maximize its tech? Sure, Uncharted 3 and Forza 4 (insert any upcoming stellar looking game) looks awesome, but even if they reach the ceiling for pushing PS3 and Xbox 360's visuals, does that really mean that other areas don't need improvement? AI, community features, storytelling and ambiance are things that can be further improved and enriched without making a game that looks like BF3. Just look at the creativity found in Portal, Braid, LBP, Limbo or the games from ThatGameCompany. There's plenty of creativity left to make innovative and engrossing experiences without bringing on a new generation of consoles. Almost every game developer including one of my favorites, Fumito Ueda, has stated that storytelling in games is still fairly primitive (that's not a quote and I'm not going to properly cite it, but it was from an IGN article which consisted of game makers' opinions on storytelling in the market). It seems that many video game developers are focusing on one over the other (visual fidelity over creativity or vice-versa). I, myself, love to be treated to visual splendor, but I don't want a new generation to come out with beefed up and expensive tech that necessitate huge budgets for shorter, shallower games because companies need to put all their resources into the visuals. I don't want individual game prices to go up to $70, because the budgets are competing with movies. Some games are great looking but short on substantial gameplay. If I want to watch something with incredible effects and CGI, I'll watch Inception or a Pixar flick. In some of the newer shooter titles you just go from one checkpoint to another killing people and occasionally interacting with a bomb or turret by pressing one button. If I want an on-rails experience, I'll ride a roller coaster. What I want from my consoles is for developers to use the sufficient resources they currently have to make games that improve all aspects of gaming and immersion instead of just focusing on visuals. Graphics and technology are important, but I just don't believe in paying an arm and a leg for an inferior product. Oh, and for those of you who play PC, I understand that the article is fairly bias towards the console perspective, but that's because it is talking about the next generation of consoles. I'm not bashing PC as I use steam myself, and I enjoy youtubing trailers for their impressive games and mods, but PCs and consoles are two entirely different gaming mediums. PC will always look better and have more options in terms of mods and community. Regardless of console generation's transitions those things won't change, because PCs are easily upgraded. A console, on the other hand, should be affordable and offer a good, convenient game experience regardless of all the bells and whistles it totes. So if you want something upgraded ever three, four or five years, keep suping up that $1000 dollar (or higher) rig, but please stop bashing consoles for not being able to do with limited tech that is 6 years old, what unlimited and ever-growing tech of today can do. It's silly. And speaking of tech, how many PC gamers do you think actually have high end gaming machines? I don't think many in proportion to how many to the tens of millions (if not hundreds of millions) of PC gamers that actually exist . And if they do, many are pirating the games ported to console or just not buying them since just about every console game released on PC sells a fraction of the amount than it does on a console. So you want companies to go bankrupt in order to cater to a few privileged? Just keep playing your PC, buy the multiplat games on the superior tech, and enjoy consoles for the exclusives they offer if you have so much money to spare. As for me, I don't have it, and I don't want to see prices rise so I'll enjoy this gen while it lasts.
way too long for a comment... perhaps make a thread?
anyways +1 for first comment :p

Sorry, I didn't think of that because, like I said I've never posted before. I don't even put comments on other sites forums either, just read them, but thanks for the heads up. I'll make a thread if I feel strongly about something next time and can't fit it in a small paragraph or less :)

But some of us gamers have had a PS3 for years now.... we would really like a new console and even spend more money on it, to make sure that the quality will last for years again.
awe i heart the pc kids feelings again... either way, its just how things work with console... they are on top in every aspect for about 2 years then PC catches up.. the perfect cycle is 7-8 years then new gen... its time for a new console from all sides, lets hope they bring their best.
I don't care what anyone says, PM is still my fav. Star Wars. Had to note that with what's stated towards the end. On topic, isn't the Wii U 1080p native?
The Wii U is the next big thing. The first real HD-console that is capable of displaying detailed graphics in 1080p. The Wii U will lead the console market for at least two years until PS4 and Xbox3 will arrive.
Are you frecking enayi??? You mal xD ... what the heck are you talking about. I think you are new in this gamer world

You must have really low standards if you are impressed by current gen graphics at this point of time. Or you have never seen what high end pc can do with games (i'd suggest some Witcher 2 and BF3 trailers)

Dude are you kidding me?? PS3 amd xbox are capable of playing games 1080p. The problem is that developer dont make a lot of games in 1080p. Why would developers spent extra million's and months optimising the game so it would run in 1080p when they know that it wont change sale numbers? do you really think GOW3 will sell a lot more if it was 1080P? or would you think the sales number will nothave a significant change? Look at the ps2, the graphics are so much better now then when it first came out because developers know how it works. Give the PS3 some more times and developers will be able to utilize the ps3 full potential (on exclusives). The reason why ps3 suffer is because most multiplatform games are made on the xbox and get ported to the ps3. Since the PS3 is more powerful than the xbox, its easier to port from xbox to ps3 then vice versa.

Well written article. I am waiting for the angry Nintendo camp to flood this article sadly though because of the Wii U comment. Therefore let me say it before they do "oh but it is stated that the Wii U in fact is OVER 9000 time more powerful than the HD twins!!!" or "this site said that Kojima's cousin said that Kojima himself said that the Wii U can do MGS 4 with only 0.01% of its power!!!" Anyways, with games such as Gears 3, Uncharted 3, more Halo, etc, coming out and the quality of many games improving, I am more than satisfied. Heck, even the Wii having Skyward Sword may end up revitalized with some good sales that might motivate Ninty to make more quality titles not named Wii Sports Super Mix 1000

ROFL VGC Nintendo side acted as usual, immature yet predictable instead of replying with some well thought out argument to create a debate.
