"ModernWarfare3.com" Is Being Used to Advertise Battlefield 3

When you're trying to find something in the wonderfully scary world of the Internet, chances are you'll probably just go onto a search engine (let's not kid ourselves here, it's going to be Google) and type in a keyword to quickly find whatever it is you're looking for.

Others, however, will simply type in what they're looking for in the browser's address bar and hope for the best. Some appear to have done this while looking for information regarding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and stumbled upon something rather intriguing. The web address "ModernWarfare3.com" directs visitors to EA's official Battlefield 3 website.

Now, of course, some of you are going to think right away that EA is behind all of this, but that's most probably not the case. According to a Whois page the domain was registered via a proxy, something that EA does not do. And according to Kotaku, just last week the website had up a rather angry message trying to steer gamers away from buying Modern Warfare 3.

It read:

Modern Warfare is crap. On November 8, 2011, the most over-hyped first-person action series of all-time returns with the copy and paste sequel to the lackluster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Check out the E3 2011 gameplay demo featuring the Black Tuesday level for a look at the epic fail of the campaign. Pre-Order Call of Duty MW3 Today for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC to secure exclusive bonuses only available online for Modern Warfare 3 fanboys who don't know that Battlefield 3 is the better game.

It seems pretty evident that this is the work of a fanboy taking things to the next level. We've contacted Activision for comment and will update this space when or if they decide to respond.

lol funny but sad. Bad part is it will probably get BF3 bad press. However, I do agree that CodMW3 is just another cookie cutter game and BF3 really should be everyone's go to FPS this year.

this little game war is silly. different games, different styles, different appeal to different gamers. i've reserved copies of both games, i'll play whatever one i'm in the mood for at any given time. it's not like we're only allowed to own one military shooter. good grief.

Wow!!! a war over two war games...I say send these dumba$$e$ to iraq and let them learn the true nature of war and how serious it is. So that way they will not take these game too seriously.

Fanboys are hilarious. So entertaining. As we all know video games are serious business and if someone likes a game you hate you have a duty to throw a temper tantrum over it.

usrevenge (on 12 July 2011)

let the stupid people stay on MW3 please. if your dumb enough to buy COD4 3 years in a row then i don't want your noobness in my match of BF3

So I just went to ModernWarfare3.com and it now redirects to EA's Battlefield 3 website. Looks like it wasn't a fanboy website after all. Dick move EA, dick move. Funny as hell though.

Its a proxy as the OP states. Not EA.

You don't need to be the owner of the target website to redirect to it, you only need to be the owner of the domain that is redirected.

If it is going to cause the blood pressure of fanboys, and other franchise partisans to rise, and get in an uproar, I am going to preorder MW3. Does this bother you usrevenge? If so, I will definitely make sure I do it.
