Final Fantasy XIII-2 Detailed By Famitsu

by Nicholas Taylor, posted on 14 June 2011 / 2,583 Views

The upcoming sequel to Final Fantasy XIII has recieved some detailed coverage by Famitsu, revealing a bit about the plot and overall theme of the game. First off, the game is currently 70% completed, and it was confirmed that the Paradigm Shift battle system introduced in the first game has been retained for its sequel.

It was also confirmed that Noel, the person seen in the trailers and screens from E3 last week, is likely to have a more prominent role than the last game's main protagonist, Lightning. Motomu Toriyama, the game's producer, said that rather than having dual stories unfold for Noel and Lightning, most of the time you will advance through the story using Noel and Lightning's sister Serah, who was in the first game.

He also mentioned that Snow Villiers from the first game would be returning in some capacity in Final Fantasy XIII-2, and also noted that he isn't the type to worry about the relationship between Noel and Serah. Toriyama said that the new Mog Clock system (Hit the link for details) and the new cinematic action system will help make battles shorter.

It's been mentioned that the game may have multiple endings, and Toriyama said that the game will include a interactive conversation system called Live Trigger, which makes it so that each time you play, the possible selections during dialogue will change. He did say that this was implemented moreso to enjoy the dialogue rather than branching the story, though.

Another major point for the sequel is that the game will have towns, something the first game lacked, which attracted a lot of criticism. Toriyama also said that the town's residents will have individual AI. It was also mentioned that the game will have some sort of monster raising component, but there wasn't much detail given.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is set to be released in December of this year in Japan, and has a release in other territories planned for the first quarter of 2012.

@Iplayeverthing. Minigames? You mean jumping on a chocobo and digging up treasure over and over again is a minigame cause it was just boring as hell to me. FF13 is not like any other final fantasy game ever created. The other games all gave you freedom after the first introduction hour of gameplay and the running back and forth did not consist of Ceth stone, narror paths, fight monster, back to ceth stone repeat 65 times in the one same area. Every other final fantasy game gave you freedom and variety. Also mate I have probably played and completed more RPGs than you even know existed. Grinding and farming is nothing to me. I'm not talking about grinding. I'm talking about the only sense of freedom this game has is doing the same thing over and over again. Fighting monsters is not a problem but sometimes you want to have a game of cards or play some blitzball, or better yet go on a few quests that have actual stories to them were you fight a monster at the end. Also you must have missed the part were I said I platnumed the game because your last bit seems to say that people wouldn't plat the game if they didn't like it but here I am plated the game and I don't like it. Also sales isn't a measure of how good a game is. I've played many games that failed to sell 1 million but they are 100 times better than some games that sold 5 plus million but whatever. You'll never change my mind about the game so why bother

I wish I could be excited for this, but there were no redeeming qualities in XIII, and it sounds like they're very interested in keeping it mostly the same. I did say that with some work, the battle system could be not-broken, and the story could be more developed, but it's not enough of an overhaul to restore my faith in the game. Big old pass from me for now.

ff13 is a great game. look forward to another one. I'm not sure why you would complain about a final fantasy game being bad because its linear and you have to run back and forth to kill monsters. Uh? er? which is it? linear or having to run back and forth? er... final fantasy has always had you run in a direction for a bit and then do some running back and forth for grinding monsters. Granted this one had a 20 hour guided story play, but then it opens up to a ton of free roam explore/stone quest/mini games/spreads the missons within the remaining story line path. if you don't like to grind....rpg for you? maybe not typical of what some want with the new paradigm system and all, but really? You want the same game over and over? nah, it is a good game that is different than all before it, but retains what is needed to be a ff game. really? you don't like running back and forth killing monsters, but then you say you want more explorable area with even more side quest? You don't like running back and forth, but you will buy another if it has more of it? er... A lot of sales and platinum trophies out there for such a bad game.

I still have a bad taste in my mouth after FF13. I mean I platnumed the game and all but it was one hugh lineur piece of crap and all the sidequests consisted of running back and forth killing monsters. I can't even remember much of the story and snow and lightning are the only characters I remember too. Sadly the absence of towns was only a small fraction of why FF13 sucked and until I hear they have made the game more explorable with many sidequests and open world areas then I might consider picking it up.

Sounds awesome, but please don't release Jan 2012, exams are then, Feb would be nice.

2012 is set to be a great year for RPG's, I just hope that early 2012 doesn't mean that it will end up somewhere near March :-(

I am excited for this after reading the GI article on the game. Sounds like Squeenix heard us and is making the effort to basically have a "do-over" of the game. Maybe some of the backlash from XIV helped them realize that us gamers give a shiz.

I can't believe it. They're going to ruin the game with a bad main character and Mog Clock. Let's just hope it won't have too many quick-time events...
