New Nintendo Console Watch: Wii Sees Price Dropped to $169.99

Adding a bit more fuel to the fire stoked a few days ago, Nintendo's Wii just saw a price drop today at Best Buy, further suggesting that a new Nintendo console may well be in the works.

Best Buy is the first to promote the price cut to $169.99, according to VentureBeat. Target is the next retailer rumored to present the new price point on Monday.

Earlier in the week tech blog Engadget suggested that the Wii would see a price drop to $150 come May 15, but that price point may come to fruition at some later time before the launch of Nintendo's next console. It may even land lower by the time fall 2012 rolls around.

Rumors have been swirling about the next Nintendo console since the Wii's launch in 2006, but it seems like it has become more than mere hearsay at this point. What do you guys think?

@ chris hu Yes, it is a temporary sell. This coming Sunday is Easter. The best buy communication was pretty clear that this was a one week sell.

Gamestop has it listed at $169.99 also again I doubt this is a temporary sale.

Isn't this just an Easter sale?

i work at target our target ad shows the wii at 199 but for this week only you get ea 2.0 active for free but not 169 epic fail

gergroy (on 17 April 2011)

I work at best buy, this isn't a permanent price drop, just a sell that ends this Saturday. Epic fail on any site reporting this as a price drop. Try doing a little bit of research before you post false information will you?

Nintendo's gonna have their work cut out for them with Wii 2... they're gonna need to release a system that not only caters to their existing expanded market base (and priced accordingly), but also have some cutting edge technology to compel the core 360/PS3/PC gamers to want to pick one up as well... and have the software to satisfy both markets to boot!

I love my Wii, my favourite console of the gen, and I have all of them...if you say you only have 3 good games in its lifespan, allow me to direct you to this post; http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=67101&page=1

i cant wait to not buy Wii 2 with only 3 good games its entire lifespan.

wiifan75 (on 17 April 2011)

lmao @ nintendogamer I've loved my wii and will buy a newer console day one. No questions about it. Love the games nintendo makes. And FPS games just rock with the wiimote controls.

Nintendogamer (on 16 April 2011)

You wont get Wii 2 either Kenna.

Smart time to lower the price. If the Wii 2 has cameras and 6 inch screens built into the controllers they will likely cost $80 each, or more. Add $300 for the core console and really the Wii2 is a $400-$500 beast. Anybody seriously interested in the Wii as a secondary console should get one now. I got mine a few months back and Mario Kart is so much fun. Basically the only game I play, but I will get into others.

Still won't get one, I'm curious about the new rumoured Wii2.

Chris Hu (on 16 April 2011)

@Kwaidd I doubt this is a temporary price drop to drive up sales. I'm pretty sure that by the end of the week all retailers will have the Wii on sale for $169.99.

teigaga (on 16 April 2011)

@luiaots it just adds fuel to the rumour, this what company's normally do when they're about to drop new hardware

Kwaidd (on 16 April 2011)

it isn't a full on price drop, its just a deal to drive some sales. A couple months ago Wal-Mart had Wiis going for 150 or 160 as well. A price drop because a console might be releasing in another year and a half isn't very probable.

luiaots (on 16 April 2011)

SInce when does just a price cut mean a new console is about to come out? That is like saying that because you see a cloud it is going to rain. While it is normally true that before it rains there are clouds, just the existence of clouds doesn't mean it is going to rain.

You can get a Wii on Amazon UK for under £100 too... Might be worth putting it in your article? http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004FEF5PC/ref=s9_al_bw_ir01?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=18S8MDK1P13BR72N5XET&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=239465067&pf_rd_i=16423401

That just proves they felt the time was right for a price drop. This doesn't further those rumors anymore than the 2009 price drop proved the insistence then that there would be a new console.
