UPDATE: Epic Games have clarified with gamrFeed that Splinter Cell 3D, the game Ubisoft was referring to when they stated they had the Unreal Engine working on the Nintendo 3DS, is actually running on Unreal Engine 2 and not 3:

"This version of Splinter Cell is an adaptation of a game from 2005 that runs on Unreal Engine 2," Epic Games told us.

Mark Rein also said: "Ubisoft has done amazing work with our tech. They even ported UE2 to GameCube, Wii and PSP. If memory serves correctly, the original Splinter Cell was on Xbox, PS2, PC and GameCube. Way to go, Ubisoft!" The original report can be read below.

Epic Games' Vice President, Mark Rein, said a while back that their Unreal Engine isn't able to run "well" on the Nintendo 3DS -- defending their decision to not be developing any games on the platform. Ubisoft, however, thinks otherwise.

In a Q&A session with GameSpot UK, Ubisoft's Fabrice Cuny, Splinter Cell 3D's producer, stated that the 3DS is in fact able to run the Unreal Engine, and while doing so, described it as "impressive".

"The 3DS is powerful," Cuny began as he answered a question that asked whether or not the 3DS has the same processing power as thr Wii.

"And we are able to run the Unreal engine on this console, which is pretty impressive for a handheld machine, and the 3D doesn’t affect the performance (thanks to my amazing programmers). The architecture is different compared to a Wii or some other platforms that we had to work with here at Ubisoft Montreal."

Mark Rein, remember, also said that "the second Nintendo releases a piece of hardware that can run our engine well, we'll be on it like water on fish." Has that time already come with the Nintendo 3DS? Let us know your thoughts.

@NoirSon: I'm fairly certain he'll be liking the NGP, though. o_0

unreal engine 2 looooooooooool all the haters saying unreal hates nintendo were wrongggg, nintendo just makes weak machines so they can protect their profits

I've always doubted statements from Epic Games. They're biased towards Microsoft and suspiciously so.

yeah whatever I don't see epic deving on Nint anytime soon.

It makes sense since a Nintendo rep (who was showing a demo of 3DS) told me that the it's capabilities were higher than the Wii but less than the 360!

Mark Reins hates portables systems And no iPhone and iPod don't count as systems.

Incubi (on 24 March 2011)

You know: Mark Rein was probably refering to Unreal Engine 3, while Fabrice Cuny was refering to Unreal Engine 2,5? He never states what version of Unreal Engine he's talking about.

The question is which version of unreal engine they make run on the 3DS... For information Ubisoft had made the 2.5 Unreal Engine on the Wii

I'm always skeptical with Ubi, they say great things and then act disappointingly... I mean, I'm sure they can make the unreal engine run on 3DS, the thing is that probably, they're gonna make a Just Dance game with it... They have a lot of talent, many Wii games they've made look spectacular (i.e. Red Steel 2 and Prince of Persia - Forgotten Sands), but for every AAA or A game they develop, there are like 29 shovelware games...
