Warner Bros Sign Deal with Epic to Use Unreal Exclusively - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 19 March 2011 / 3,457 Views

Epic Games has announced a long-term deal with Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment, meaning Warner Bros will use the Unreal Engine 3 exclusively in their games up until 2014.

This means that the studios of Rocksteady and NetherRealm will use the Epic-developed technology exclusively in their projects, including any further games in the Batman: Arkham Asylum/City series and the Mortal Kombat series.

The licensing deal also includes an agreement where Warner Bros have the option to use the Unreal Engine on any project it publishes.

Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games, said he is excited about the engine being used with such talented development teams and is looking forward to their finished products.

"We're very excited that the talented production teams at NetherRealm and Rocksteady will continue to make Unreal Engine 3 their exclusive core technology for the next few years to create the exceptional titles they are so known for," Rein said. "We look forward to seeing how the engine will contribute to the upcoming games from these teams and potentially other Warner teams and external developers who develop or publish with Warner."

it means WB will ONLY USE Unreal Engine 3 for development. They won't use Havok or anybody elses.

This DOES NOT MEAN Unreal Engine 3 will be limited.

I wish this would make UE3 exclusive to WB, and keep that shitty middleware out of so many games, actually force people to develop and innovate their own tech, then maybe we could see some progress in game design. UE3 is goddamn crutch.

read the article and the quote guys -- this means that WB will only be using unreal 3 on their games exclusively not that WB has exclusive access to unreal 3.

I guess they could use the engine for their upcoming title Sesame Street: Elmo's A-to-Zoo Adventure.

Would someone please explain this better because I doube it's what I think it is...

Are Warner Bros. really the only ones allowed to use UE in their games?? What would they gain from preventing others from using the engine??

So what does this mean for indies currently developing with UDK? Just going to screw them over?

This is great, that means less game using this engine and thus more variety. About time. Seriously you can tell instantly when a game uses this engine, more so then with other famous engines like source or Cryengine. The style is so distinvtive that every game ends up looking the same. So good news indeed if more proprietary engines or other engines like cryengine 3 or ID tech 5 are more widely used.

It means Warner Bros. are the only ones who can use the Unreal engine until 2014. Given the widespread use of it this is BIG news.
Bioshock, Mass Effect, Batman: Arkam Asylum, Mirror's Edge, Borderlands, Bulletstorm, and Gears of War just to name the most important ones.

Does this mean that WB will only be able to use the Unreal engine in their games or only WB are able to use the engine? I know it sounds like a silly question but I initially read it as the latter but cant believe Epic would do that.
