Nintendo Sold 1.5 Million Video Game Systems During Black Friday Week - News

by Gabriel Franco , posted on 29 November 2010 / 7,062 Views

Thanks to new hardware colors and special holiday bundles, Nintendo sold 1.5 million video game systems last week, according to the company's own internal sales estimates. Nintendo reports 900,000 combined units in the Nintendo DS family of systems  sold and 600,000 Wii consoles sold between Sunday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 27

“U.S. shoppers bought about 9,000 Nintendo hardware systems nonstop for every hour of every day during the week of Black Friday,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “For the past several years, consumers have decided that Nintendo defined both top value and all-inclusive entertainment, and that sentiment continues again at the start of this shopping season.”

According to Nintendo the new commemorative red Wii and DSi XL systems and the new the orange and green Nintendo DSi holiday bundles were key parts in the success of last week sales.

Compared to last year Black Friday the Wii had a 9.16 % increase while the DS had a 10% decrease.

Black Friday 2009

Wii - 550,000
DS - 1,000,000

Microsoft had sold roughly 310,000 X360s for Black Friday week 2007, and 390,00 X360s for Black Friday week 2008 but didn't provide a number for last year. Sony sold 440,000 PS3s for Black Friday week 2009.

DS remains well ahead of its 2007-2008 Black Friday week paces in 2009 and 2010, as the 2007-2008 paces were 653,000 and 780,000 respectively.

Black Friday 2010

Wii - 600,000
DS - 900,000

Black Friday week tends to account for 35-50% of November hardware sales in the USA, so Nintendo's figures for the week imply excellent months once again for Wii and DS.

@Arfen

Yep that's right. Not sure by how much though.

I'd guess at least 650-700k for the Wii and possibly over 1 mil for the DS?

@Arfen, looking that way. A $150 Wii would help out sales next holiday season. I don't see Nintendo releasing the next home console till 2012 holiday season considering the Wii is still selling pretty good.

I think Wii will do a bit more than 80M, I think they can scratch 82M but maybe 83M if they sell massive amounts.

I saw it happening all the way, WII will top 80M at end of the year world wide. DS will be the all time best seller after removing the mighty PS2 from top.
Congratulation Nintendo

And all hopes for a new system coming out late next year from Nintendo have been slashed this holiday season!!

I want to play Zelda in HD Nintendo!!! Sell-outs!!!

(but if you handed me millions of dollars, I'd probably sell out too)

One thought - December is usually an extension of Black Friday-level sales, or a weekly drop off of 30% to 50% from BF week levels. Wii sold 550,000 in the USA last BF week, and then 3.81m in December by NPD - which was 762,000 per week by NPD a major exception to the rule. PS3 in comparison did 440,000 BF week 2009, but only sold 1.35m in December (270,000 / week). DS sold 1m BF week 2009, and dropped to 3.31m in December (662,000 / week).

My take is last year Wii increased a bit on more temporary December price cuts - and so a similar round of pushes this year could see Wii nearly maintain (+5%/-5%) or exceed its Black Friday pace into December. 600,000 * 5 would be another 3m month...but actually down 20%+ from last year.

I admit, I was starting to worry that the Wii was losing steam with so many factors pitched against it, (PS3/360 now having motion controls as well, 360 slim, plus the fact that it's initial "wow" factor has cooled) but it seems I underestimated its Christmas appeal.

It doesn't seem to have a system selling game on the same level as NSMBW this holiday, though. Can DKCR fill the gap, or will having only 2 players hold it back?

looks like 5 to 6 million wiis by christmas isn't such a far fetched possibility after all..? Where are all the doubters now?

(ok to be fair I did doubt the wii would have such a strong christmas too ;)

I thought everyone already has Wii :-)

I went to a mall that has Wii/DS booth. The buzz is certainly gone comparing to the years before. However, I still see many kids/adults enjoying DK and Mario games.. The red Wii also makes me want to get another Wii.
