PS Jailbreak Sold Out
by Arthur Kabrick, posted on 22 August 2010 / 6,826 ViewsPS Jailbreak, the first successful PS3 hack, was unveiled a few days ago by modding community OzModChips, based in Australia. It uses a debug exploit to allow the backing up of Blu-Ray PS3 games onto an internal or external hard drive, and the playback of these games from said hard drive.
Legal, as long as it is only used for "backups," PS Jailbreak is currently being sold for the exorbitant price of $130. Despite this, however, as well as the fact that it could be patched to oblivion by a simple Firmware update, Jailbreak is flying off shelves.

The sole "authorised" dealer for the United States, Shop PS Jailbreak, has already run out of stock, and a new shipment will not arrive until Monday 23rd August (tomorrow).
The following is the official notice:
(Website URLs and e-mail addresses have been blanked out - we don't condone piracy here).
PS Jailbreak is available now from a multitude of dealers in various countries, but you have only yourself to blame when you have to choose between "backups" and PSN access, and $130 of your money has been wasted.
Are the "l" and "b" in jailbreak supposed to be the same letter or is that just a really big typo?
I suspect this is more spin than anything and more likely "we havent sold any (or very little) but we had better say we are out of stock" type of situation. I wonder when Sony will release the firmware patch to sort this out.
if they manage to keep it alive, PS3 will get a slight salesboost in the next weeks.. ^^ but as HabinoBR said.. there's nothing as good as having the original Copy of a Game, and especially this generation, piracy can inflict heavy damage to a dev's Studio, and that's what we 'Game Buying' gamers would like to prevent, am i right?
This may sway me to pick up a PS3 just to play a few exclusives on it. Soon there will be whole backup files for download online.
Wonder why Sony hasn't responded to this yet. I never feel right to pirate consoles heck I don't even pirate my PSP I imported all DJ Max games no matter how expensive it was to support the developers. Quality developers should always have the support of their fans.
@haxxiy the firmware can never be directly accessed even while in debug mode, so custom firmware is impossible, to be ale to get it you would have to dissect an aactual orriginal firmware and somehow gain access to the internal structure of the hdd and such a feat is currently impossible. This mod is pretty much strictly for playing backups or piracy, there is no custom firmware or homebrew or anything like that. I believe its so developers can install the newest build of a game on a ps3 for testing purposes so they dont have to worry about wasting blurays or botching a burn. @sergiodaly i agree with ya, i have some new games i bought months ago still in the original wrapper, also when i had my psp hacked it didnt feel right playing pirated games, so now i have a psp go and my old psp 3000 on official firmwares.
@haxxiy actually even though it is in a debug mode they still have no access to the firmwares, for a custom firmware to be developed you would have to dissect the current firmware and open complete access to the harddrive and actually flash it into it, and still a feat i believe is impossible @seriodaly, i agree with ya, i still havent even opened some of the games i purchased, and for some reason when my psp was hacked it didnt feel very satisfying to p

i barely have the time to play my original games... i don't need a bunch of GB of games i don't have time to play... and i enjoy more playing originals than pirate games!
@ binary solo - doubt it. If it happens, most likely some .pkg program will arise allowing mod users to safely upgrade or mimmic upgrades so games can be played like it happens in the Wii piracy scene.
So Sony does a FW update that disables the ability to back-up Blu-ray disc games, leaving jailbreakers stuck with an outdated FW and of course every new release game that comes out from that point foward will only be capable of being played on the latest FW updated PS3. So you'll only be able to play back catalogue games, which for the most part aren't a big concern for the publishers. This means you'll need 2 PS3's as well as the mod-usb in oreder to be able to play your back-ups, and later release games. I didn't even know you could fully back-up a blu-ray disc game. I thought there was just the install option which installs part of the game only.
Honestly I think this mod is going to be more accepted than the Xbox 360's mod. There is much more risk associated with using an internal mod (flash 360 disk drive's firmware) compared to an external mod. You also don't have to worry about voiding your warranty if you use an external mod. You want PSN? Just unplug the external usb whenever you go online and then play only legitimate copies when you are online. Since the mod is external, Sony can't detect it so as long as it's not plugged in while you are online. And firmware updates will only temporarily stop you from modding. Just wait until the modders update their own firmware for the external usb mod and then viola! You can play backups again. Firmware for DS flash cards and PSP and Wii homebrew receive frequent updates to keep up with new copy protection schemes. So this isn't anything new. With the Xbox 360 on the other hand, the mod is internal so it's very easy for Microsoft to detect shady activity. It doesn't matter if you play backups offline only. If MS sees that your DVD Drive's firmware is modded, you get the banhammer. Thousands of 360 modders online swore by stealth patching and and "only playing backups offline" (this doesn't work. If you have a modded 360, you cannot go online AT ALL. Not even with legitimate copies. Because all MS has to do is scan your DVD Drive's firmware to see if it's modded). And then they got banned with the Call of Duty wave last year.
Even if was at 30 bucks, im out... Sony will make this useless, besides that original games rulez
It is legal to "Jailbreak" your PS3 in the US. It is only illegal to copy games you don't own. While piracy is bad, I like having all my games on the Hard Drive. It has two key advantages. One it makes games load a lot faster. Two the convenience of having your whole game library on a HD means no disc swapping ever even to change games. Remember that was a big deal for many with FFXIII. People will abuse this no doubt and the PS3 would have remained unhacked if Sony didn't draw so much attention to itself 6 months ago like an idiot.
Well, the "PowerOn->Eject" command to load firmware from USB Drive (with exc keys off course), can be patched thru a new firmware, after that consoles can be banned from PSN and so on... One thing I donīt know yet.. will Sony let it go? Or not? I like my "legal" ps3 and will not update... I am sad for this... but I canīt imagine is itīs good for Sont crhitmas... I think Sony is pissed of... but... who knows???
Of course Sony will ban this. Actually most people knows that and are willing to loose PSN for this.
@SecondWar - They hacked the 360 slim last week. It was a joint effort from Team Xecuter, Team Jungle, and commodore4eva. The new ixtreme firmware for the slim should be publicly released within a week or two (I assume). http://www.redmondpie.com/hack-xbox-360-slim-s-mod-for-pirate-games-video/
@elmerion Yeah, but theyve all been pirated since they launched. Sonys keep the PS3 hack-free for nearly 4 years so its likely they find some way of containing it. Actually come to think of it, did Microsoft beef-up the 360S or was it hackable in the same way as the old models?
Sorry guys, but the Wii has piracy, PC has piracy, Xbox 360 has piracy and no firmware update is going to stop it because Hackers work twice as hard as Sony
Increase HW sales? People can just buy used ones off craigslist and Ebay! No money for Sony!
Would/will find it hilarious if/when Sony release a firmware update that bricks the modded consoles.
I'll be getting one for my spare ps3 once a cheap clone lands. All my games on hard drive with faster load times. Sold :>
If sony can patch this, they should wait till Christmas sale time... This could help them shift some console then once patched out they would in theory gain atlest afew customers, if not the hackers would sell the consoles on cheaper giving sony a price cut with the hackers taking the loss
It can't be blocked by firmware guys. Sony will need a new motherboard revision to block this up and it will be just in newer consoles. Think how older Wiis can be softmoded easily and still get the latest updates. All Nintendo could do was keep newer Wiis from running DVDs from factory.
Someone at Sony will buy one. They will discover how they do this. They will release a new firmware to block it.
I laugh my ass off if Sony blocks this with the next FW. $150 gone for nothing. Sure, you don't have to update, but you loose online compatibility.
A few hours ago it was rumoured that the PSjailbreak had already been cloned. Those cloned PSJ units will probably do the same thing but will sell cheaper than $130. I don't feel the least bit sorry for those suckers.
This will probably increase hardware sales of the PS3 more than any game announcement.
