Yakuza 3 Reviewed by Actual Yakuza

BoingBoing has just posted an intriguing article in which Jake Adelstein, a former crime reporter in Japan, takes a copy of Yakuza 3 and presents it to three yakuza bosses.

Each boss gets a swing at the game and they comment on its realism and what works and what doesn't.

It's an original and fascinating look into the game from the actual crime lords its based on. They all remain anonymous and have some intriguing things to say about this interactive take on the world they actually live in.

Their comments are quite interesting on all aspects of the game. Here are some snippets:

"What's the deal with Kiryu's scarlet red shirt? He's supposed to be a former boss of the Inagawakai--and he dresses like a chinpira (low level yakuza punk). He's a yakuza, not a host."

"Kiryu is fighting all the time. He's gotta be a fucking idiot. No yakuza is going to run around getting into fistfights like that. Especially not an executive type. He'll wind up in jail or in the hospital or dead, maybe even whacked by his own people for being a troublemaker. These days, he'd probably get kicked out before even going to jail. Guys like that start gang wars and nobody wants that now. When a yakuza gets into a fight, it's serious business."

"The whole plot about resort expansion in Okinawa and the CIA and the politicians involved and all that? Wow. That game came out last year, right. That's totally happening in Okinawa right now."

Give the full interview a read over at BoingBoing, it's seriously interesting.

Im liking the Yakuza comments but honestly it would have been a boring game if it was realistic

"The only other slightly unusual detail is a semi-nude centerfold of a young Japanese porn star posted on the wall, close to the door, with her signature on it." Wow, it's a friggin' shame that I'm "gaijin" (what's Gaikokujin?) otherwise: where I get into this sh*t? +, awesome: they are playing together and comment on each other, awesomeČ.

I find it hilarious that one mentioned the plot of Yakuza 3 is somewhat happening right now in Okinawa.

Of course no real yakuzas would do that! The same apply to any games!

There are almost 100,000 Yakuza in Japan, and most of them are part of a single family, and fairly easy to identify.

That was an awesome read! Their comments about the gun was quite amusing.

@Toastrules its not that hard to contact them for cops working on the cases, they meet in private or their hotspot zone.and cause cops don't have any hard proof they don't fear the cops about playing the game, maybe they though they would learn some tricks from it and the future as he said it happening now........lol

This is hilarious xD , thanks for sharing @Toastrules, yakuza is pretty open and obvious you can find them in a lot of "normal" places, they all have these tattoos that they like to show off, so its not hard to find any.

LOL!

Severance (on 10 August 2010)

the funny thing is, he DID actually wind up in jail and in the hospital :-D

IMU1808 (on 10 August 2010)

Lol @ Toastrules I was wondering the same thing.

Toastrules (on 10 August 2010)

How he contacted them is one thing.... How he got them to play the game is another...
