God of War III Sells 550,000 Units on Day 1 in the Americas

Brett Walton, on 19 March 2010, 21,352 views

Following news of over 450,000 pre-orders earlier in the week, preliminary day one data is in and God of War III should outperform God of War II (released on PS2 in March 2007) by 20-30%. With over 450,000 units sold on day one, week one sales should be in the range of 650,000 - 700,000 units compared to 540,000 units sold for God of War II in week one.

God of War III - Kratos

With the game releasing across Europe today, total worldwide sales for the week should be around one million copies - more than other recent PS3 blockbusters like Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, MAG and Final Fantasy XIII (western release) and would take total sales for the God of War franchise to over 10 million units sold. God of War II only sold around 140,000 units in week one in Other Regions by comparison, but VGChartz expects sales to be much stronger this time around compared to the Americas based on pre-orders across Europe which suggest a week one of around 300,000 units or more than a 100% increase on God of War II.

Stay tuned to VGChartz for more data on God of War III as it comes in.

Update - with more data now coming in, day one sales look closer to 550,000 units than the original estimate of 450,000 units. With continued strong sales through the week, week one in the Americas should be over 800,000 units and a further 400,000+ units are expected across Europe following indications of a strong launch today so week one estimates should be well clear of 1 million units and maybe as high as 1.3-1.4 million. We will have preliminary week one data early next week.

I think its going to sell more than 1million on its first week.

Squall_Leonhart (on 22 March 2010)

@CaptainPrice

Were those week one figures or day one in the UK? I can't remember...

Xbbjf9s (on 22 March 2010)

so it will fall about 300k-400k short or msg4 1st week?

arcane_chaos (on 22 March 2010)

BEAST!!!!

man God of War 3 was just epic, that's all I can say, just EPIC!

CaptainPrice (on 22 March 2010)

Chart Track report that "‘God of War III’ outdoes its PS2 predecessor’s launch by 2.65 to 1" in the UK. If similar patterns are followed across Others it would sell 413,000 there.

libellule (on 22 March 2010)

just have seen the update !
nice nice nice !

mcbo18 (on 22 March 2010)

im hoping 2 millions first week this game is huge in europe and in spain for example is the most reserved game in history!!!!

ioi (on 21 March 2010)

250k was retailer pre-orders in Canada - i.e first shipment. Not consumer pre-orders.

-ku- (on 21 March 2010)

Didn't GoW 3 have 250k pre-orders in Canada alone so 450+250k = 700k So possible 7 day America sales could be 1 million alone

down-down-down-down- (on 21 March 2010)

wow amazing, but this game really deserved it!=)

hayeya_k (on 21 March 2010)

First it was FFXIII, now GOD3,,,,,,,,, i love these sales modifications :)

I am Now a "super mega ultimate alpha Turbo EX + omega Double Dash Third Strike" PS3 OWNER !

iinglish (on 21 March 2010)

Love that GOW 3 is doing so well- SONY fan here- however I disagree about the whole GOTY- this title goes to Heavy Rain and i own both and have beaten both..

ElGranCabeza (on 21 March 2010)

do you guys know that meme Shot themselves in teh foot? I believe this applies to Sony big time here, I saw a couple of people at walmart today that wanted to buy a PS3 to play GOW3 and of course they were sold out, one guy just left, the other said he can't find the damn thing anywhere.

mcbo18 (on 21 March 2010)

wow thats great for that genre i mean watching the sales of dantes inferno, bayonetta or darksiders this is the modern warfare of button mashing

seruderu (on 20 March 2010)

that picture at top from GOW 2

Michelasso (on 20 March 2010)

Good looking game but I'm not a fan of button mashing. I still don't understand why it's so popular. I played GOW I and it was ok. Best graphics for PS2, true. Still I'm happy for the PS3.

EroSennin (on 20 March 2010)

@ Shin Megami

i think that GT5 will sale 2 KK first week... im not even a fan but for me is a must buy

and God of War, now i think kratos will pass 1.5 KK

Shin Megami (on 20 March 2010)

I really think that Gran Turismo 5 will push A LOT of PS3 end of year. I know a couple of people, who are sitting on the fence and just waiting for Gran Turismo. In Europe the brand is huge (look only at the sales of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue! It sold almost 4 million copies and is more or less only a demo of GT5).
What I see is that Sony is expanding in a lot of genres and pushing a lot of new (Infamous, LBP, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Motorstorm, White Knight Chronicles,...) and old franchises (Gran Turismo, GOW,...), while MS is relying too much on its few franchises (more or less Gears of War and Halo). Think MS approach will be earlier or later a problem when one of the franchises loses its appeal.

irtz (on 20 March 2010)

nice

M.U.G.E.N (on 20 March 2010)

Oh hell yes!

zibeddy (on 20 March 2010)

god of war 1 & 2 sold over 3 million each so hopefully the same folks will come back for more.

dahuman (on 20 March 2010)

game looks epic, that's for sure, game play is about the same, but no reason to fix what's not broken, I really like that they changed the bow to the item bar instead of gay mana, can spam the shit out of that thing lol.

Kilzoned82 (on 20 March 2010)

IMO God of War III is GOTY 2010. I crown the new king for 2010. Gran Turismo 5, Halo: Reach and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Can all take a back seat. God of War III is the best game ever!!!

Heat (on 20 March 2010)

@ruff_romeo
Such as...

Baalzamon (on 20 March 2010)

@shin megami (again): I totally agree with you, I think the hype in Europe is much more than the hype here...perhaps it will hit 1.5-1.7 million, and perhaps my estimate of 300-320k units is underestimated...maybe 350k units next week?

Baalzamon (on 20 March 2010)

@Shin Megami: I was told by somebody GT5 will not push consoles...do I believe them, no...but i'm just saying.

bumblejr2 (on 20 March 2010)

deserves it, this game is bloody amazing. and HARD on titan mode lol >.< it keeps asking me to go to easy mode! NOOO!!!!

GreenW (on 20 March 2010)

550k?good!

milkmytoe (on 20 March 2010)

See a few sad 360 fanboys made an appearance. 1.5 million in one week (Overall approx)for a SP only game with no online? Outstanding, no other way to describe it. game deserves it, its jaw dropping.

sabby_e17 (on 20 March 2010)

Holy shit. 550,000 day 1?! This is insane.

apollon (on 20 March 2010)

very good sales for a very god game :)

HelloMotto (on 20 March 2010)

they have probably made back all the profits.

gow collection + gow 3

Shin Megami (on 20 March 2010)

I think the Europe numbers are way too low.
Most PS3 games sell better in Europe than in the US, the user base is 2 million bigger than the US. The GOWIII-Hype here is everywhere, most papers (not gamer-specific) are writing about the game.
Very interesting to see the PS3 finally picking up heat. In Japan the "Torne bundle" is selling out (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2010/03/19/japanese-retailers-selling-out-of-ps3-torne-dvr-peripheral/), in the US the PS3 seems to be only scarcely avaiable, and in Europe its selling like crazy. With the incredible lineup of 2010 not vey surprising. And just wait till Gran Turismo 5 comes out....

Kilzoned82 (on 20 March 2010)

Amazing sales. God of War III total sales should be up to 1.5 million sales worldwide. 1 million sales for North America's first week sales.

binary solo (on 20 March 2010)

Good to see.

I don't know why but its being sold here in some stores at a significant discount. Almost 30% cheaper than Dragon Age Origins and 20% cheaper than FFXIII. Though our prices here are so inflated that even at this discount it still equates to being $10 more expensive than the US full price.

Marco (on 20 March 2010)

AWESOMEEEEEEEEE

gamelover2000 (on 20 March 2010)

1.3-1.4 million? forget my earlier comment.. colour me SUPER happy and impressed

Kenoid (on 20 March 2010)

@Makaha,
What are you trying to prove? Everyone has their own game likings.
God of war is one example, it has fantastic gameplay environments but does everyone buy the game? Each game tries to see what the masses want in their games, which is the reason why the GOW series is one of the most successful franchises in the playstation's inventory.

BTW, you've forgotten to add Killzone. =)

EroSennin (on 20 March 2010)

@ kupomogli

hahaha you are crazy we will first buy GOW and then yakuza
OMGOW!!!!

psfanboy (on 20 March 2010)

Finaly a sony ex game is getting the sales it deserve!

thismeintiel (on 20 March 2010)

Oh kupomogli, get out of here with that trolling. Obviously millions think the story is anything but boring, me included. Yakuza is a pretty good game, but I would still rather play the GoW series.

kupomogli (on 20 March 2010)

God of War 3 is just the same game all over again. It's like thinking 2 was actually going to be any different from the first one other than the boring storyline.

Go buy Yakuza 3. Much better game.

--OkeyDokey-- (on 20 March 2010)

The first two games were adjusted up too.

3.7 million for GoW and 3 million for GoW II. I think this one can beat both of them.

restored_lost (on 20 March 2010)

yea just beat it, couldn't put it down for the last 3 hours, i actually really enjoyed the ending, thought it was great.good game, good sales, lets see this thing get to 5mln ltd.

Makaha (on 20 March 2010)

I thought the PS3 had no gamez!

oh wait....

MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank, Valkyria Chronicles, Demons Souls, UC, UC2, Infamous, Heavy Rain, GOW3....

oh, I guess the PS3 does have some!!

LOL, LOL

SOLIDSNAKE08 (on 20 March 2010)

whys everyone acting surprised? its GOD OF WAR 3!!!

iWarMachine (on 20 March 2010)

go kratos go kratos, it's your birthday, it's your birthday (?)

Angelv577 (on 19 March 2010)

Definitely a GOTY contender.

solidpumar (on 19 March 2010)

I think week one on others will be way above 300.000. I expect 450.000 week one for others.

Baalzamon (on 19 March 2010)

I never thought I would hear somebody say that is poor sales...that will give it like 3.5-4.0 million lifetime sales, which is higher than most exclusives for both consoles...

Attoyou (on 19 March 2010)

Awesome! best game ever :-P IMO of course.

Snake612 (on 19 March 2010)

Wow if the game sells more than 1 million copies worlwide, it will be the second fastest selling PS3 exclusive of all time behind MGS4.

snyperdud (on 19 March 2010)

550k? And a week one as high as 1.3 - 1.4 million WW?

Holy fuck that's awesome.

ProdigyBam (on 19 March 2010)

Never thought the hype would be so big here in germany, but the game was sold everywhere and that has never been the case
i also heard many RL people talking about it, i think its more popular here in europe than many would expect...

tombi123 (on 19 March 2010)

OMFGOW

shanbcn (on 19 March 2010)

mOeR-rpGee (on 19 March 2010)

@limelight

hermes boots are a blast... you will be using them.. alot..

also changing weapons on the fly also for great combos... explore the combat system... i made several combos with all 4 weapons included and 2-3 magics... very fun... it is difficult to do them on hard thou...

bbsin (on 19 March 2010)

@limelight022: 2 words, hermes boots. The nemesis ship is also faster than all the other weapons.

iLLmaticV3 (on 19 March 2010)

Wow...that's amazing.

limelight022 (on 19 March 2010)

While I've only put about 3 hours into the game so far, it feels VERY familiar...Epic introduction, Kratos loses abilities and weapons, fall to hades, get out of hades, climb back to the top of the food chain. And while the combat is still fun, i was hoping it would be tweaked at least a little in terms of speed and fluidity. Changing weapons on the fly is a great start though.

Cross-X (on 19 March 2010)

OH MY GOD OF WAR!!!

leatherhat (on 19 March 2010)

Just beat it, so GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD. Now I gotta start the trials.

hunter_alien (on 19 March 2010)

AngelosL (on 19 March 2010)

luisgvm (on 19 March 2010)

gekkokamen (on 19 March 2010)

GOWIII!!! GOWIII!!! GOWIII!!!

There. I had to do that three times... now I feel silly, playing GOWIII has left me numb. Please, do not attempt to play this game on a empty stomach lol

Heavenly_King (on 19 March 2010)

OH MY GOW!!!

NicholasCage (on 19 March 2010)

@Nitrous_18

Read the update.

Nitrous_18 (on 19 March 2010)

Is it me or did the title say 450k before?

Ping_ii (on 19 March 2010)

LOL @ FKNetwork, ahh well its not 360 game so it was expected from you.

nen-suer (on 19 March 2010)

wow, great start
cant wait to see the final numbers for the week

Chrono74 (on 19 March 2010)

I am more of an RPG/Fighter guy..but I picked up GoW3 and the graphics are epic...but the gameplay remains unchanged..still it is fun

SOLIDSNAKE08 (on 19 March 2010)

if we see like a 1.5 million + first week then im sure we'd hear sumthin about it from sony. although they never really give sales do they?

Euphoria14 (on 19 March 2010)

@FKNetwork

1.3-1.5M First Week is poor sales? Really? O_o

djs (on 19 March 2010)

Amazing sales for a non shooter...

Snake612 (on 19 March 2010)

YES! The game sells 500k day one in America! YES. GOD OF WAR III FTW

CGI-Quality (on 19 March 2010)

WoW! Looking even better!

1 mill Week 1 is a given at this point.

Carl2291 (on 19 March 2010)

Wow...

DAY 1 sales in NA could be better than WEEK 1 sales of God of War 2?

FKNetwork (on 19 March 2010)

Pretty poor first week sales then, wasn't this game meant to be "the" big ps3 title everyone kept going on about? hmm....

mOeR-rpGee (on 19 March 2010)

are we really looking at a 1.5m worldwide first week? that would be beyond anyone's predicitions/expectations.

Gilgamesh (on 19 March 2010)

Wow big update! 100K more. My predictions looking better now

DrDread (on 19 March 2010)

Ive played them all, twice, and I'm on the last chapter of GoW 3. It's probably the most entertaining thing I've ever done in video games, no joke.

I'm ignoring my girlfriend all week, just like the commercial. I thought Uncharted 2 was the best so far, and it sortof was, but GoW has trumped it royaly.

GameAnalyser (on 19 March 2010)

expect the unexpected from others as well....

Xen (on 19 March 2010)

Oh snap...
Well, if there's any PS3 game that deserves to achieve this feat, then it's this one!

moondeep (on 19 March 2010)

This is impressive, especially considering the HW base for the PS3 compared to that of the PS2 when GoW2 was released. The attach rate is MUCH higher. Of course, since the PS3 had already launched by the time GoW2 released, there could've been folks who would've bought GoW2 but held off because they were busy focusing on buying games for their new system (and might've already sold off their PS2 also).

CGI-Quality (on 19 March 2010)

@ Kasz

A "guy" in here doesn't speak for an entire community. Vic worded it as if to say it was a unanimous prediction that it would do 1 mill Day 1. I don't recall that being a widespread prediction.

What I do recall, however, is many predictions North of 1 mill for the first week, which looks feasible at this point.

Lezard_Valeth (on 19 March 2010)

Pre-orders have reached 250 000 in Canada ALONE. 450k units sold on day one in the Americas seems a bit low imo.

mOeR-rpGee (on 19 March 2010)

@Ljigga

some actually enjoy a game and will play it over again... add to the fact that there is varying difficulty and people who play hack and slash generally want to master the game and therefore will play it a few times...

not every game needs online to be fun.

think-man (on 19 March 2010)

americans love god of war :)

EroSennin (on 19 March 2010)

i hope 1.5 KK the first week

Notorius.A.i.G (on 19 March 2010)

Great First Day !

thismeintiel (on 19 March 2010)

@ mememalo

450K is just for day one sales. Some people may not have picked up there game first day. Don't worry, it'll probably be ~ 1 mil for the whole week.

luisgvm (on 19 March 2010)

omg!!! amazing!!!.

EroSennin (on 19 March 2010)

i only want to say something... in the 2010 There Will Be Only Chaos!!!
The Return od the King (ps3)

ljigga (on 19 March 2010)

Great numbers for a game with virtually no replay value or online! I wonder if these numbers include ultimate editions and such?

Miguel_Zorro (on 19 March 2010)

What is with people who consider a game a failure if it doesn't do Modern Warfare 2 or Halo 3 numbers on day 1? Let's keep things in perspective. Very few games put up those kinds of numbers.

God of War 3 will do over 1 million worldwide for week 1. That's very good.

mememalo (on 19 March 2010)

mmmm something does not feel right... here in vgchartz i see a notice that says ---Americas preorders march 13--- god of war had 485,000... so you expect that in march 16 preorders go to 500k that plus the sales of that day.... how is that it only have 450k???
