2010 Year on Year Sales and Market Share Update to Jan 9th

by Brent Williams, posted on 14 January 2010 / 2,627 Views

Here we see data representing the global sales through to consumers, and change in sales performance, of the three home consoles over comparable periods for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.  Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods

It is very early days yet and so the comments here are brief this week.

It is clear that the Wii and PS3 are still benefitting from the momentum generated with their respective price cuts / re-launch.

For the Wii to be up even on last years figures is very impressive, especially considering the holiday sales it has just generated, and perhaps this also demonstrates the extent of the supply constraints last year.

The PS3 is still performing extremely well and it will be interesting to see where the level of sales will be over the coming months.  The PS3 looks set for its best year so far regardless.

The 360 is all too predicatably down this year so far and is very likely to remain so unless there is some action from Microsoft.

Good to see another strong week from Sony. Microsoft isn't worried, though, they have a big lead in NA still. No need for MS to panic. I'm impressed with the Wii (for what, like the 10th week in a row!).

@ViolentPhlegm: I agree about the long shot making 500k with FF, but sales will still be high for a long time with a very impressive lineup of games coming out.

Baalzamon (on 14 January 2010)

@ViolentPhlegm: well, the ps3 was only 1k short of 360 in America, so even if sales drop next week, we will still see a very large difference between ps3 and 360

RareglovE (on 14 January 2010)

the PS3 is on fire now, the ball is on their court now but again for how long. :(

gamefreak4ever (on 14 January 2010)

Its time for PS3 to take its top position. In the HD war its at the top and now as far as hardware sells its going to get there.

Nsanity (on 14 January 2010)

@ViolentPhlegm: Halo Reach and Project Natal would like a word with you

ViolentPhlegm (on 14 January 2010)

Keep in mind that New Year's week greatly favours the PS3 over the 360 as it's still a huge week in Japan and some other places, but sales plummet in Americas. PS3 and 360 should be a lot closer in the weeks to come.

Tridrakious (on 14 January 2010)

The PS3 should stablize around 200k untill March, where it has a shot of getting back to 500k. Despite Final Fantasy XIII.

Nintendogamer (on 14 January 2010)

@Munkeh111 SMG 2, metroid other m correct but zelda Wii would be the biggest, that's if it does come this year, and if Nintendo market's the hell out of Vitality sensor that could be huge also. We will see some big guns this E3 for the big N.

Munkeh111 (on 14 January 2010)

Everything looks just fine now. Can't really draw that much from the charts this early on, but it does look fine for the PS3. 360 does look a little low, but Natal and a price cut should reverse that in the holidays

kowenicki (on 14 January 2010)

fixed

LinKing12 (on 14 January 2010)

Why don't they do one of these things for the DS? Anyways, congrats Sony and CONGRATS NINTENDO! WAA-HOOO! Lol, and what happened to Microsoft?

kowenicki (on 14 January 2010)

@munkeh... ohhhh I see. oops. yes you are right.

kowenicki (on 14 January 2010)

@libellule I agree.

kowenicki (on 14 January 2010)

@munkeh 2009 ? 2010? where what? its right I think.

Munkeh111 (on 14 January 2010)

@ nintendogamer, the big games for Wii are SMG 2 and Metroid aren't they?

darthdevidem01 (on 14 January 2010)

yeah PS3 did really well last year maybe 15 million in its $199 year @munkeh your avatar REALLY REALLY looks cool!

Nintendogamer (on 14 January 2010)

I think Wii should do better this year than 2009, should sell about 23 Million if the SW released this year do push HW a bit.

Munkeh111 (on 14 January 2010)

At the top, with the dates for 2010, shouldn't it be 2009 not 2008? So last year the PS3 managed 13m, maybe it can manage 15m this year? With GT 5 it certainly has a shot, that should sell 1m consoles over the year, and with a price cut it is certain to be that 13m figure

libellule (on 14 January 2010)

Is not only about PS3 being under price cut effect it is also about 360 not being under his own price cut effect compared to early 2009 where the YoY comparaison with early 2008 was lot better (+75% !!!) it is just a question of price pacing.

kowenicki (on 14 January 2010)

yeah micxrosoft ? oops

huaxiong90 (on 14 January 2010)

Micxrosoft?
