100 million Nintendo DS units sold to customers

Today VGChartz.com, the most comprehensive videogaming charts in the world, is proud to be the first to announce that Nintendo DS sales crossed the 100 million units mark as of March 21st, 2009, only two weeks after Nintendo reported official shipments of the Dual Screen had passed 100 million units.

The handheld reached that milestone after only 225 weeks on sale, faster than any other console or handheld ever released. To date there are only 3 videogaming systems that passed the mark of 100 million units shipped or sold. These are The Playstation 2 (137 million units shipped), the original Game Boy (118 million shipped) and the Playstation (102 million shipped).

                

Sales of the handheld are almost evenly split between the big 3 markets: Japan accounts for 26 million units, while North America and Europe (including niche markets such as Australia and Asia) account for 33 and 41 millions of units sold respectively (figures rounded).

This is what gives me faith that portable gaming won't submit to sh!tty iFone apps... This and the lack of enough memory to store games with good graphics (a DS cartridge has 1GB of space, that would limit the largest iFone to 16 games without music or movies if they had DS graphics or depth in gameplay...)

@KillerGran. I think the original DS ended around 17-18 million... the the DSi being Japan only until now has sold about 1.5-2 million. So about 80 million DS lites
