That's an epic flop.
Allothers episodes ended million sellers. It won't. The quality wasn't on par with the previous episodes.
I love this game.
Hopefully this and Federation Farce serve as a wake-up call.
So what should Nintendo have done? Cancel the games that they've already invest a lot of money into because they're receiving negative feedback from people who aren't even playing them? If they did that, we would have never have gotten Metroid Prime or The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.
That's easier said than done. With Metroid, there are several issues. First, Retro was the studio who made the 3D Metroid games. At the time, they were working on other projects. Given the lukewarm reception of Other M, Nintendo most likely wouldn't have trusted anyone else with a 3D Metroid. Also, it seemed like Retro wanted to move away from Metroid. Then there's the investment. A 3D Metroid on the Wii U would be an expensive investment with no real guaranteed return on their investment. Despite popular myths, Metroid is NOT one of Nintendo's most popular franchises. It has never sold well in Japan and has had only moderate success elsewhere. Then there's the spinoff. Given the success of games like Hyrule Legends, there's no reason to think a Metroid spinoff couldn't achieve the same success.
With paper Mario, Nintendo has been deviating from the basic formula for a good decade now. Yet the games have still sold. So from Nintendo's point of view, they probably see it as a series that allows for experimentation while being able to maintain decent sales.
In the end, I think Nintendo could have done better with Federation Force's marketing and presentation. If the graphics and art style had looked like a Metroid game, it probably would have sold better. For Paper Mario, timing is what did this game in. It got good reviews. Gamers who have played it seem to like it, but it just happens to be getting a release on a dying console.
It breaks my heart for Metroid Prime fans that the franchise isn't very popular. It's a valid point and I wish there were a way Nintendo could give MP fans what they want whilst still keeping the franchise profitable enough.
I was never too into Paper Mario but from what I understand, Sticker Star sold well but was poorly received by fans. Hopefully this sets a precedent for what not to do in future Paper Mario games: make another TTYD, NOT a SS.
Flop. Guess it is going to be cheaper soon. Good that I wait to buy it.
probably something to do with Wii U owners not being thrilled about the Switch announcement. Why buy Paper Mario now if they're going to get a Switch and it will probably get ported anyway?
Unfortunate. i like this game quite a bit.
Uh...poor Paper Mario. I don't think it deserved to bomb this hard, especially since it seems to have a really good script and seems to take steps into the right direction again (yeah the battle system is sticker star, but the rest of the game isn't).
Maybe it'll get a switch port.
I'm guessing at this point, numbers like these are as good of an excuse as any for giving up on the Wii U. Considering general first party attach rates, this is an abysmal first week.
Its a very good game, Nintendo fans really do cut their nose off to spite their face sometimes. Its not Thousand year door blah blah, but in its own right a decent game with solid review scores.
That my friends is what you call a flop. Nintendo, please take note. Please return to 64 and TTYD style.
Hopefully Nintendo considers an NSwitch port, because I'm certainly not buying it on Wii U.
