Microsoft: Xbox Games on PC Doesn't Take Away from Console Experience, Gives More People the Chance to Play Great Games - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 22 August 2016 / 12,383 Views

Microsoft will be releasing all of the games from Microsoft Studios during E3 2016 on Windows 10 PC as part of the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative. That has lead arguments on the internet stating that there is no longer a need to own an Xbox One when you can play the same games on Windows 10 PC.

Xbox executive Albert Penello told Inner Circle Podcast (and transcribed by GameSpot) that releasing games on PC doesn't take away from the console market. It instead gives more gamers the chance to play games.

"There's a debate or a discussion that you can have with a certain type of people online and you want to argue details and argue nuance, but the reality is that most people don't make that kind of choice," Penello said.

"Today, if you play games, you're playing games on just about everything you own. You're playing games on your phone, you're playing games on your console when you want to lay back in front of that big TV, and you're playing PC games when you want that keyboard and mouse, up-close, highly customized kind of experience. Even guys that are diehard console gamers, we know they play on their phone and PC.

"So to me, the idea that you're bringing games to the PC suddenly means that people don't want consoles anymore...it doesn't ring true to how gamers really behave.

"Giving PC guys the opportunity to play Quantum Break and Killer Instinct doesn't doesn't really take anything away from the console guys," he explained. "It just gives more people a chance to play great games on the device they want to play on."

I'm glad they think so, but it's a little rich coming from them.
I wish they'd employ this attitude of "The more people get to play, the better!" when it comes to instances like paying off Tomb Raider for an exclusivity deal.

Guess Street Fighter 5 doesn't count then.

They are nice, not stupid! Anyone can play them, but not on competing systems.

Also, Sony doesn't act like MS dark...

I'm just as annoyed by Sony's part in perpetuating this stupid format war as am at Microsoft's. But this article is about Microsoft, so I didn't bother commenting on Sony.
Please don't assume that my criticism of Microsoft automatically translates to a compliment for Sony.

"It instead gives more gamers the chance to play games." Oh yeah Panello? You had Minecraft running on an iPad at your show, but we all know you have stock in Apple Inc. But, if this is what you really want, then why not release your games on Nintendo and PlayStation hardware? I believe someone requested the Rare Collection be released on Nintendo hardware to which Phil Spencer himself stated "if fans want it." Does Phil Spencer want the unity he preaches about? Well, why not release Gears of War on PlayStation and release Fable on Nintendo? Why not allow Rare to develop another Battletoads game on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo? You talk as though you want neutrality but you really just want, quoting Phil Spencer from an interview with former SCEA CEO Jack Tretton "... that you quit kicking me in the heels...".

I'm with you. They're proudly announcing "We want anybody to be able to play our games!" then quietly whispering "...as long as its on one of our systems"

I dont see any reason why any game shouldnt be on pc as well. I had ps2, 3 & 4 and still played rather on pc.

No, but I eliminates the necessity of an Xbox One (though not necessarily the want). Someone who owns a PC now has no need for an Xbox; Someone who owns a PS4 would get better game coverage by adding a PC.

Steam encourages people to stick with Windows and even upgrade. Windows 10 is now the most popular OS on Steam. Bear in mind about 95% of Steam is Windows users and the SteamOS seems to be a failure thus far.

Ruler Ruler (on 24 August 2016)

yeah sure like Apple and Linux are stealing Microsofts market? Really?

  • -1
Mr Puggsly Ruler (on 24 August 2016)

Steam helped make Windows gaming relevant in a big way. It also encourages people to upgrade for new features that Windows 10 exclusive. So if you have the impression MS doesent benefit from Steam, youre wrong. MS doesent bother competing with Steam either because its only relevant on Windows.

I just feel that PS fans really don't like playing the "two way street" game. Otherwise my comments wouldn't be downrated for pointing out that we can share if they do.

If this comment gets downvotes, I am right. If it gets upvotes, I am also right since it shows I am being honest and the rest of the forum isn't being FAIR.

ROBOTECHHEAVEN (on 23 August 2016)

All the people that have made comments so far , like to bash xbox and Microsoft period. And can't stand anything good natured about xbox at all. All u people need to grow up and mature and understand gaming and what it stands for and not this childish fan boy shit.

NeoMahi ROBOTECHHEAVEN (on 23 August 2016)

What you don't understand is that Microsoft is so wishy washy. What they talk about makes no sense. Some people are so blinded or are wearing the "goggles" they refuse to see reality. It's business and marketing. You're saying one thing, but you're really implying another. You also fail to remember, as do most, the reason Microsoft is on the position they are right now. The vast majority of consumers don't trust Microsoft, including many who were right beside them the whole way. It has little to do with fanboy, that you think it does.

@NeoMahi Trust? Gamers have short term memory. it's all about the hype train.

  • -1
darkenergy ROBOTECHHEAVEN (on 23 August 2016)

@Neo I'm pretty sure those who don't like Microsoft/Xbox are the ones who are "blind" and need to take off their "goggles".

And Microsoft care because? Money is money in the end.

  • -9
Barkley KazumaKiryu (on 23 August 2016)

Because Microsoft would much rather you be a gamer on their closed Xbox platform then Windows... duh. They have complete control over Xbox, everything has to go through them and they get a cut of EVERYTHING, Windows they don't have control.

If someone wants to release a game, application or service on PC Microsoft never even has to know about it.

  • +3
Azzanation KazumaKiryu (on 23 August 2016)

@Barkley You do relize that software turns more profit than hardware right. Also your supporting Xbox by buying Xbox games duh haha

  • -3
Barkley KazumaKiryu (on 23 August 2016)

@Azzanation.... Erm yes, you do realize that I never once mentioned hardware profits in my comment right? By buying Microsoft games you are supporting them yes, but Microsoft would vastly prefer you to be an Xbox gamer then a PC gamer obviously.

Does Microsoft prefer a user on A or B?

A. Closed platform, Microsoft has full control over this platform and everything that goes on that platform. Microsoft can charge a subscription fee for online, every single piece of software and every service HAS to go through Microsoft, be approved by Microsoft and in turn provide Microsoft with Revenue.

B. Open platform, Microsoft has very limited control, anyone can release any service or software without any involvement from Microsoft.

Obviously MS would prefer A, Duh.

@Barkley Do you have proof on your claim? Remember most X1 games require Windows 10 and its store so its a win win situation for them.
As for everything else you said. Its MS's choice on where there games go. It clearly doesnt bother them at all. If it did than they wouldn't do it.

Not true. All they have to do is allow for modding of game files and update the catalog and it'll be perfect!
