Nintendo: The NX is About the Content, Not the Specs

Nintendo: The NX is About the Content, Not the Specs - News

When Microsoft revealed Project Scorpio, the more powerful Xbox One, it talked about how many teraflops the console would be when it launches in 2017. It is likely Sony will talk about teraflops when it officially unveils the PlayStation 4 Neo.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in an interview with Bloomberg, and transcribed by VG24/7, downplayed the specs of the NX and that content is most important.

"For us, it’s not about specs, it’s not about teraflops, it’s not about the horsepower of a particular system. For us, it’s about the content," said Fils-Aime. "We’re focused on bringing our best entertainment to both the Wii U as well as the NX in the future. So for us, whatever Microsoft and Sony are doing in terms of talking about new systems, that’s for them to fight out in that red ocean."

The NX is scheduled to release in March 2017.

oooooo red ocean! I have not heard that from Nintendo say that in a long time! Could the NX be an actual Wii/DS Successor this time?

Should be about both content and specs, imo.

The Wii worked because people bought into the motion hype, they ignored the specs. When they launched the Wii U a lot of gamers where disappointed with how the Wii turned out, they looked at the specs and what the Wii U had to offer and even tough Nintendo games are top class, they decided not to support it. If the NX doesn't have good specs it needs MORE then just nintendo games, I am waiting to see what it is, but I am scared for Nintendo.

I'm surprised they haven't courted more of the developers that do great things with smaller specs. A lot of JRPGs on the Vita could be just fine on Wii U. A lot of the smaller indie games would player to perfection on Wii U. If Inafune had been partnered with Nintendo, maybe Mighty No. 9 wouldn't have gone through all the madness it has. And now Bloodstained is successful on Kickstarter. Nintendo should be pursuing these guys. They should be getting Square to put I am Setsuna on Wii U rather letting it head to PS4. They're right - content is more important than power, but they aren't chasing the opportunities to provide that massive library of content that Playstation and XB1 tend to more likely overlook.

This is pretty much the worst possible thing he could say. They said the same about the Wii U... It would be about the content, not the power... and the content was the EXACT same thing we got on the Wii with slightly better than PS3 graphics.. The same games ported over it felt like.. Playing the same games over and over on under powered hardware gets old. It worked for the Wii because the gimmick caught onto the mainstream big time and the games were mostly great. Sorry to say it but the NX is going to be right about where the Wii U is at, maybe even worse off. Just wait for it. Call me out all you want but make sure we come back to this comment thread so I can say I told you so.

okaaaay... content was exactly the Wii U's problem though, and the Wii's later on in its life time.
Nintendo really needs to make sure it doesn't get left out of the third party market again.

I agree that it's about the content, not the specs. But guess what Reggie, if your console is too underpowered like the Wii U, you are not going to get the 3rd party games!
