Welcome to the VGChartz Gap charts. These charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.
3DS Vs. PSP Global:
Gap change in latest month: 319,884 – 3DS
Gap change over last 12 months: 2,233,563 – PSP
Total Lead: 3,650,502 – 3DS
3DS Total Sales: 55,890,684
PSP Total Sales: 52,240,182
In the latest month the gap grew 319,884 units in favor of the 3DS, however that only partially offsets the gains the PSP has made throughout the past year. In the last 12 months the gap has shrunk in favor of the PSP by 2.23 million units. The 3DS currently leads by 3.65 million units.
An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The PSP first launched in December 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011. The 3DS has sold 55.89 million units in its first 58 months, while the PSP sold 52.24 million units.

Wow, the 3DS has had a bigger advantage than I thought. It's the longevity of PS devices that is going to be the breaking point, though.
Yeah and the psp didn't have to take on these crazy cellphone games that are graphically on par and in cases better with handhelds. When the psp came out cell phone games were a joke it wasn't until like 2010 and beyond that cell phone games really started to evolve into REAL games and not just 15 minute gimmicks to give you something to do at the doctors office. Put the 3ds in the same time frame and it wouldn't be close obviously look at what the first ds did to the psp outsold it 2-1, you could just imagine what the 3ds would have done. Because even though the 3ds is current gen and psp is last gen they are about equal in power. (graphics,voice overs ,cinematic's,sound,overall size of game,etc)
Dang. I didn't think the 3DS would actually be ahead of the PSP. I'm impressed.
But I'll have to agree with Darwinianevolution on this one. After the games it has next year and the launch of NX. The 3DS would drop sharply in sales.
Wow that is pretty amazing! I dont think it will outsell it but damn!!!!!! Congrats to Nintendo for turning this device around!
Given the context into which the 3ds was released and the slow start (not to mention an almost ignored console counterpart), I have to confess that it wound up far exceeding my expectations. The PSP will pass it shortly, but the 3ds achieved all that could be reasonably expected of it.
PSP for its time sold like a beast. It's neck and neck with the 3DS now, but eventually that'll change unless 3DS ends up selling 80 million by the end of its cycle. It could make it, but we're talking another 25 million units and 3DS is definitely slowing down by now. It has sold about 6 million this year so it needs at least 3-4 more equally selling years to catch PSP. Possible, though unlikely as eventually it might be replaced by a successor one day anyways. 3DS lasted 4 years now and PSP had lasted more than 10 years.
That's hard to happen, as Nintendo consoles slow down by theend of their cycle, and almost halt on sells when a new one is announced. The rumored NX is said to be a Portable at first then a home console, so is gonna be 3DS replacement. Probably anounced next year if the rumours of early 2017 are true.
how did the PSP sell like a 'beast' for its time when the original DS sold practically DOUBLE what it sold (and in shorter period of time)
the PSP's longevity was impressive but bear in mind Sony releases a ton of variations of the system and development costs for that sort thing aren't that cheap
