NPD: Xbox One Outsold PS4 in October, Halo 5 Top Selling Game - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 12 November 2015 / 7,380 Views

Video game console sales grew just three percent in October in the US year-over-year, according to NPD. Current generation platforms grew 12 percent, while last generation platforms fell 66 percent.

Microsoft revealed in a PR statement that Xbox One sales grew 81 percent year-over-year and that it was the best-selling console for the month. That would put sales at around 304,000 units.

"The strength of the greatest games lineup in Xbox history drove record Xbox Live usage for October and made Xbox One the best-selling console in the U.S. with 81 percent growth compared to October 2014," said Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols in a statement. "We saw amazing fan excitement, commercial success and critical acclaim in October for ‘Halo 5: Guardians,’ which was the best-selling game in the US."

Halo 5: Guardians was the top selling game for the month according to NPD estimates, beating out NBA 2K16 for the top 10:

1. Halo 5: Guardians (XBO)
2. NBA 2K16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
3. Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (PS4, XBO)
4. Madden NFL 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
5. WWE 2K16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
6. FIFA 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
7. Destiny: The Taken King (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
8. Yoshi's Woolly World (NWU)
9. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (PS4)
10. Rock Band 4 (XBO, PS4)

Good to see Halo is still going strong after 14 years. This has been a great year for Xbox One.

In the grand scheme of things it hasn't really. Still failing in eu. And only had two true retail exclusives right at end of year

Nice. Xbox gets hate that it doesn't deserve. Not as bad as people say it is.

This entire gen is going to be about hating on Xbox as far as I can see, a bit of PC too but that's to be expected now from last gen where the losing crowd decided to not let bygones be bygones and instead held onto the hate and are now unleashing it this gen, I wouldn't expect them to learn next gen either if the shoe goes on the other foot.

No, this announcement came from Microsoft. Of course they're eager to tout Halo, you know, since it's pretty much all they have :P

Woah... Is no one seeing Yoshi? If this is out of the whole month, and it beat The Nathan Drake Collection, that means like almost 600k for Yoshi in just US? That seems a bit off.

But everyone loves Yoshi.

I think this whole "best line up in Xbox history" is a tad ridiculous and maybe needs to stop be spread around. Halo 5 comes out, and suddenly they have the best line up? Relying on those coat tails a bit too much, me thinks.

I really need to know what is wrong with America. The rest of the world can say no thanks to the XB1, but America gobbles it up despite public knowledge that it is a weaker machine with a smaller library for the same price.

America has that American pride. Hard to get rid of.

I think that's a lot of it. Bros who think Japanese games are "gay" too. Oh and I'm from Seattle, where Microsoft is based, so most of my friends and obviously tons of their employees are going to have them.

Simply a better machine imo. Use it for much more than games and the UI kills what the PS4 has visually. I will get a ps4 when Uncharted 4 comes out to have em all though. Weaker machine, barely. The real difference lies between console and PC tremendously.

Not by much. A 30k difference in halo month is nothing to brag about. Most ppl are no doubt waiting on Christmas shopping I'm sure. Both consoles sold horribly though considering each one's strengths they had for October. Halo 5 and a price cut should have did more imo.

Hopefully November sales improve for both substantially.

I have both consoles..and i play all the multiplatform titles on my xbox. Just cause the ps4 runs slightly better you still have to take into account xbox's superior joypad and home screen. I also prefer the achievement points over trophies...the ps4 is just not that much better that i would abandon the xbox after owning the 360 for all those years. Ps4's exclusives though are awesome and why i had to get both!

Nothing is wrong with America. I admit I may be a slight xbox fanboy. I realise however that PS4 is a better machine. Microsoft is allowing Sony to win. They could crush sony at any moment of their choosing but do not. Therefore until xbox backs out of gaming, which I doubt, I will have an xbox. Stop acting like Americans are stupid because our gaming franchise has a loyal fanbase.

I prefer Xbox controllers, Xbox brand, Xbox interface, Xbox members mentallity/maturity, and above all Halo, I bought the console for it.

Looks like someone doesn't like it when Xbox One wins :)

So something is wrong with millions of people because they buy a console of there choice? Sorry to say but maybe the USA isn't blinded by marketing, maybe its the rest of the world that cant see quality? Its not like the US doesn't have a choice in there purchases. I am not even American yet I am saying this. Word of advice, don't judge people. BTW Halo is awesome, maybe you should play it and find out why it sells so much.
