Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.
This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in March 2014. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games worldwide in 2013, and the week before that the top 10 selling games in Japan in 2013.
Looking at the top 10 selling games in March 2014, eight of the 10 games were released in March. One of the other games was release in December 2013 and the other in May 2012.
In March the top 10 games sold 6.07 million units. The top two selling games, Titanfall (XOne) and inFAMOUS: Second Son (PS4), sold more than one million units. The top four games sold more than 500,000 units and the entire top 10 sold more than 300,000 units.
When you break it down by publisher there is just one first party title and nine third party titles. The one first party title was published by Sony and is inFAMOUS: Second Son. There are two Namco Bandai titles, two Konami titles, two Ubisoft titles, one Electronic Arts title, One Square Enix title, and one Activision title.
The two Namco Bandai titles, Dark Souls II for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, sold a combined 1.09 million units or 17.96 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Konami titles, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, sold a combined 0.93 million units or 15.32 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Ubisoft titles, South Park: The Stick of Truth for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, sold a combined 0.81 million units or 13.34 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
When you break it down by platform there are four PlayStation 3 titles, two PlayStation 4 titles, two Xbox 360 titles, one Xbox One title, and one PC title. The four PlayStation 3 sold a combined 1.96 million units or 32.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two PlayStation 4 titles sold a combined 1.62 million units or 26.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Xbox 360 titles sold a combined 0.75 million units or 12.36 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
Side note: The PlayStation 4 was the top selling platform in March with 863,491 units sold. The 3DS sold 619,337 units, the Xbox One sold 491,495 units, the PlayStation 3 sold 317,837 units, the Vita sold 294,314 units, the Wii U sold 188,049 units, the Xbox 360 sold 176,561 units, the PSP sold 70,181 units, and the Wii sold 1.95 58,091 units.
The top 12 titles sold more than 300,000 units and the top 16 titles sold more than 200,000 units. The top 39 titles sold more than 100,000 units and the top 98 titles sold more than 50,000 units.
