Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.

This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in Europe in 2013. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in the USA in 2013, and the week before that the top 10 selling Wii games in 2013.

Top 10 Selling Games in Europe in 2013

Looking at the top 10 selling games in Europe in 2013, all 10 games were released in 2013. Two of the games were released in June, four in September, one in October, and three in November.

In 2013 the top 10 games in Europe sold 27.65 million units. The top selling game, Grand Theft Auto V for the PlayStation 3, sold more than five million units. The top seven games sold more than two million units and the entire top 10 sold more than one million units.

When you break it down by publisher there are three first party titles, published by Nintendo, and Sony, and seven third party titles.  Of the first party titles there are two titles published by Nintendo and one by Sony. Of the third party titles there are two published by Take-Two, two by Activision, two by Electronic Arts, and one by Ubisoft.

The two Nintendo games sold a combined 3.26 million units or 11.79 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Take-Two games sold a combined 11.41 million units or 41.27 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Activision titles sold 4.57 million units, or 16.53 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Electronic Arts titles sold 5.74 million units, or 20.76 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

 Top 10 Selling Games in Europe in 2013

There are three games, Grand Theft Auto V, FIFA 14 and Call of Duty: Ghosts, which have two versions in the top 10. All three games are for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The two version of Grand Theft Auto V sold a combined 11.41 million units. The two versions of FIFA 14 sold a combined 5.74 million units. The two versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts sold a combined 4.57 million units.

When you break it down by platform there are five PlayStation 3 titles, three Xbox 360 titles and two 3DS titles. The five PlayStation 3 sold a combined 15.6 million units or 56.42 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three Xbox 360 titles sold a combined 8.79 million units or 31.79 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two 3DS titles sold 3.26 million units or 11.79 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Side note:  The 3DS was the top selling platform in Europe in 2013 with 4.49 million units sold. The PlayStation 3 sold 3.31 million units, the Xbox 360 sold 1.84 million units, the PlayStation 4 sold 1.71 million units, the Wii sold 824,048 units, the Xbox One sold 780,675 units, and the Wii U sold 697,669 units. For the handhelds the PSP sold 1.29 million units, the Vita sold 936,529 units, and the DS sold 179,270 units.

The top 12 titles sold more than one million units and the top 36 titles sold more than 500,000 units. The top 142 titles sold more than 200,000 units.

Electronic Arts sold the most games with 26.98 million games. Take-Two sold 18.39 million games, Nintendo sold 16.90 million games, Activision sold 16.57 million games, Ubisoft sold 15.02 million games, Sony sold 7.21 million games, Warner Bros. sold 6.69 million games, and Microsoft sold 5.58 million games.
