Interesting that X360 is showing more fatigue this year than the Wii did at the same point in 2012. Wii had dropped 35% whereas 360 has dropped 40% this year. In both cases it was known that the next console was coming so they seem analogous despite X360 being older by 2 years (since it was released 1 year earlier and it's drop is 1 year later than Wii's.
Considering Wii has been "dead" in many peoples eyes for several years is X360 dying now as well or will it rebound from a slow start to the year?
Isn't Play Station in the same position? It's 32% down, which is only 3% less then the Wii was last year. Plus PS4 has been announced, like Wii U, so wouldn't PS3 sales now start to drop?
I think both the PS3/360 are dying, but the PS3 might manage a decent year because of The Last of Us, Beyond, and maybe GT6. Plus all the multiplatform games. 360 probably won't do much better then Wii last year, and PS3 won't do that much better.
@Michael-5 - good point. I just brought up X360 because I was surprised how down it really is. I only started following this stuff recently when I decided to buy Nintendo stock because it seems like a good value stock right now after just taking a beating that last year. From message boards I would have thought that Wii had been dead for 3 years and that PS3 and XBox360 were crushing it.
In reality I'm finding that most gamers seem to latch onto a few memes and repeat them endlessly without doing much critical analysis. I joined this site because it seems to have less of the "OMG Nintendo is for babies and XBOX RULZ crowd" with some actual though put into the industry side of things - but even here the Wii has been talked about as if it died years ago. To me it looks like it died a normal death when the "next" console was coming but that has accelerated and it appears Nintendo shifted all it's development resources to WiiU in 2011/2012 and released very few games. It looks worse from a Gamers perspective I suspect because the 3rd party support on AAA titles hasn't been there for a while.
The fact that 360 is slowing down at the same pace despite having an awful lot of games still coming out makes me question the "Nintendo is dying" doom and gloom even more. On the flipside it makes me question how much the industry is shrinking vs. just waiting for a next gen console. Should be a fun year (unless I'm wrong and Nintendo hasn't bottomed and I lose all the money I invested) :)
Wii sales started to drop in 2008, but it didn't start dying until 2011. I would say 2013 is the first year it can be looked at as "dead" because last year Wii still pulled off decent numbers, and for Gamers in N/S America, it was a pretty epic year (XenoBlade, Last Story and Mario Party 9). PS3/360 started to drop in 2012, but their death will be more swift then Wii's because all the home consoles will be transitioning now instead of just Wii. I think by 2014 PS3/360 sales will be pretty minimal.
360/PS3 are dying despite strong software because people know the next gen is coming soon, and most people interested in a PS3/360 already have one. Plus most software releasing now are sequels (Gears, GoW, GTA, Bioshock, etc).
Anyway welcome to the site, VGC has a lot of Nintendo supporters, and not many Microsoft ones. So if anything you'll see MS hate here, and not Nintendo. Most of us appreciate a good game when we see one though.
