38 Studios and Big Huge Games Lays Off Entire Staff - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 24 May 2012 / 7,361 Views38 Studios, Curt Schilling's video game development studio, has hit rock bottom having laid off its entire staff amid financial problems according to reports. The studio on March 15th had 379 employees. Big Huge Games was also affected by this and has been forced to close its doors. 38 Studios MMO Copernicus has also been canned.
Earlier this month 38 Studios had missed a missed a $1.125 million loan payment, of a $75 million loan given to the studio by the Rhode Island government. This news comes just a couple of days after a closed door meeting in which all that was revealed is that studio will be laying off some of its staff.

I'm sad to say I almost knew this would happen.
Did seem like they bit off more than they could chew; large development team, huge loan and no blockbuster sales to support them. Overall, a shame as Kingdoms of Amalur showed that the team had some promise.

It was given. The Kingdoms of Amalur franchise never had big potential. Actually it got better reviews and better sales than I would have expected (probably because it was published by EA).
It's a sad, sad state of affairs when ten years ago a man like Yamauchi (who is as far away from being a game developer as you can get) saw this trend obviously coming to the industry and nobody cared...
That's to bad there game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning just released a couple months ago, if it had a bigger launch they probably wouldn't of shut down.
Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft (especially MS and Sony) seriously need to do something about dev costs. They need to go down, not up!!
The games induxtry is becoming too expensive t oproduce games now, this is the start off the death knell for them. Take two will be next
Think you mean THQ. Take Two (through 2K Games and Rockstar) generally do pretty well.
Its a shame that it came to this. Unfortunately for Schilling, being a gaming fan and a gaming developer don't go hand in hand.
