Sony Posts Record Losses, PlayStation Sales Down - News

Sony has posted a record loss for the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2012. Revenue dropped 9.6 percent to $81.5 billion and losses increased to $5.7 billion, from $3.3 billion for the previous fiscal year. Sony’s Consumer Products and Services division revenue reached $39.3 billion, an 18.5 percent decrease, while losses increased to $2.9 billion, compared to profits of $135.5 for the previous fiscal year.
Sony has shipped 13.9 million PlayStation 3s worldwide for the fiscal year, which is a drop of 400,000 compared to the previous fiscal year. 4.1 million PlayStation 2s were shipped, which is a drop of 2.3 million and the PSP shipped 6.8 million units, a drop of 1.2 million. PlayStation 3 software shipments did increase to 156.6 million, from 147.9 million. PlayStation 2 software shipments decreased from 16.4 million to 7.9 million. PSP software shipments decreased from 46.6 million to 32.2 million.
Sony expects that in the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2013, it will return to profits with revenue of $92.9 billion, a 14 percent increase. $376.5 million of profits are expected. Sony also estimates PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 combined shipments of around 16 million. Also 16 million combined shipments of the PlayStation Vita and PSP. With 10 million Vitas expected to be shipped, that would put PSP shipments at six million.

really not sure sony has what it takes to turn it around at this point. MS' decision to stick with DVD-9 and optional hard drives for this generation looks smarter every day.
For this Generation of Consoles, yes. But as for the next one, Microsoft needs something different to store games on, while Sony has BluRay, which is kinda futureproof.
A lot of that lost revenue in Consumer products and services will be the $50 price cut. So quite a bit of pain there for the sake of keeping up sales numbers. If they are looking at profit this FY I'm picking no price cuts. And because MS will cut price, I'm picking MS outsells (to customers, not shipped) PS3 in 2012.

I thought this site had been reporting that sales of PS3 are increasing?
This site reports what people want to hear - 360 down, PS3 up, but when the truth comes out, things always look different.
As much as I would like to see Sony perform well, I'm really dubious they can hit a profit within the fiscal year.
They definitely can meet the PS2/PS3 target but 16 million handhelds will be a struggle if Vita stays at the same price...
Not a surprise looking at the PS2 and PSP shipment decreases. Profits look like they have to transition to current gen and make way for next gen.

yeah, they're not doing a Vita price cut if they expect to be profitable.
what they're really banking on is that people will notice how amazing their games will be.
That Soul Sacrifice Vita game looks really cool. Could be Vita's killer app.
