VGChartz Gap Charts, February 2012 Update - News

Welcome to the VGChartz Gap charts. This article consists of the following charts. X360 Vs. Wii USA, PS3 Vs. Wii Europe, PS3 Vs. X360 Global, X360 Vs. Wii UK and PS Vita Vs. 3DS Japan.

Xbox 360 Vs. Playstation 3 Global:
Gap change in February: 129,398 - Playstation 3

Gap change over last 12 months: 643,921 - PlayStation 3
Total Lead: 3,135,069 - Xbox 360

PS3 continued closing the gap over February, by over 100,000 units. Due to adjustments the gap still remains above the 3 million mark, but with One Piece in Japan boosting PS3 hardware, and it being a 5 week month, the gap should fall below that mark by April. Unless we see any price cuts or other methods of intervention, expect the gap to close by roughly 100,000 units a month up until the fall.

Xbox 360 Vs. Wii USA:
Gap change in February: 180,520 - Xbox 360

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,705,466 - Xbox 360
Total Lead: 5,258,743 - Wii

With the holidays firmly over, sales have returned to normal and the X360 decreased the gap more this month than last. Over the remaining months up to the fall, in the same period last year, the X360 closed the gap by about 1 million units. Going into the holidays the gap should be below 4.5 million, closing the year below the 3 million mark (keeping the same rate of decrease as 2011). A Wii comeback at this point is not going to happen, Microsoft just have to maintain sales for the 360 and prevent a crash for another 2 years and it should be close to outselling the Wii, if not already achieved by that point.

Playstation 3 Vs. Wii Europe:
Gap change in February: 158,825 - PlayStation 3
Gap change over last 12 months: 1,603,653 - PlayStation 3
Total Lead: 7,020,347 - Wii

The gap is almost below 7 million between the Wii and the PS3 in Europe, and although it's closing at a good rate it still looks like it's going to take a few years going by the 12 month gap change. Of course a lot can happen in this period to speed up the process. Regardless, PS3 should enjoy long legs here so this is one for the long term.

Xbox 360 Vs. Wii UK:
Gap change in February: 40,744 - Xbox 360
Gap change over last 12 months: 724,701 - Xbox 360
Total Lead: 855,286 - Wii

As I mentioned last month, it's now a case of when not if, the X360 overtakes the Wii in the UK. Mass Effect 3 and being a 5 week month should push the gap below 800,000 units (not been this low since June 2008) and Star Wars Kinect in April should also help. If we see a consistent drop of 40,000 - 50,000 units a month, the gap will be around half a million going into the holiday season.

3DS Vs. PS Vita Japan:
Gap change in February: 253,134 - 3DS
Gap change over last 12 months: 4,551,817 - 3DS
Total Lead: 4,551,817 - 3DS

3DS maintained healthy levels in Japan this month, the same can't be said for the PS Vita which is hovering around the 10,000 unit mark. Unless we see a price cut and some Japanese appealing titles soon, the gap is going to widen further and further. The 3DS should have a solid 5 million lead by the end of April.

A 3DS vs. Vita gap chart in the West would be interesting wouldn't it?

It's kinda funny that the X360>PS3 worldwide lead is around the same 3 million as the Wii>X360 in the USA.

PlayStation 3 versus Wii in Japan. Next week I believe the PS3 will pass 8 million units sold there and the Wii is over 12 million. However, PS3 is still getting software that is boosting hardware very high. This most recent reported week has PS3 over 63k and the Wii at 7k.

A Gap-Chart PS2 vs. DS would be nice. Yes, it's old hardware, but this fight is about the best-selling console EVAR! :-)

I have one of those quaterly, as I don't have PS2 monthly sales to draw from at the minute. Next Ps2 Vs. DS chart will be in April Charts

Graphs shouldn't start at 2 million, it makes the PS3/360 lead seem small even though it's fairly large.

Only if you can't read properly, not changing it.
