So all the Sony fans who were saying LBP will be huge are now saying that its sales met their expectation.....yeah, right! More like Little Big Disappointment!
I thought this game deserved to do well (really well) and this isn't it (in Japan at least).

GTA SA sold 400K ... but that was at the end of the PS2 cycle when the installed base was huge. With such a small installed base, these are great sales for an American game.

Its frökkin First Day Sales.Yes they are low for Lbp and yes maybe Lbp wont sell well I dont care much becaus I'm not buying it anytime soon.

But its weird for all at Japan players.They are waiting for what their friends say,what Tv says,what reviews say,what unique levels you can do,and what the hell you can do with Lbp.

But hey people.Gta Iv did great!

And yet, poor Paul_Warren, games usually don't sell like that. If these sales are correct, there's usually a downward slope in sales after the first day. Which means that GTA4 will sell roughly 100k-120k while LBP should sell about 50k-70k.

Neither is bad, but considering how fans of this game have been saying that LBP will be "huge", we expected more.

Everybody is saying that LBP flopped but this is just first day sales. If it sells that well for the rest of the week, then it will sell 120,000 units of LBP. Heck, it is the number 2 game on the chart. Plus the PS3 version of GTA IV is throttling the 360 version and is set to sell over 300,000 units this week. Sounds like there will be good numbers for the PS3 this week.

It's a first day sale for LBP, God damn it man when will people understand? It's a new Ip, first time Japanese playing this kind of game. I would expect LBP to boost sony's sales if not in japan, it will be in America or Europe. 177k for the first week with not the official released date. So technically people just went to small local stores to get lbp, and it sold 177k!. The delay,though, did block the sales. Expect Sony to dominate Japan with White Knight's Chronicles, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm and for 2009 , God of war 3, Resident evil 5 and Team ICO's new ps3 project. First day sales to be 30k for a new IP is more than good...lol what did you guys thought? It would sell over 100k copies on FIRST day??? GTA4 and LBP on the same day was maybe too much for LBP.

Sony ain't dead yet, it has 14 un-announced titles from Konami and other japanese companies...if those games does not make PS3 king of japan, then the PS3 would really be dead.

wow LBP bombed bigtime. The wierd thing is i actually spoke to my old flatmate who lives in Japan and she said she went to buy it but saw everyone buying GTA4 instead. i thought she was talking crap by the looks of things LBP only just beat the 360 version of GTA4...
This gen is pretty crazy!

Anyone expect a brand new franchise is going to do amazing well in Japan?maybe,if its published by Nintendo.japanese gamers are just a bit...different from how we think.

Yes it does! A sequel means you already have a defined userbase who know/want about the game. And most didn't as the 30k is in line with what most people thought it would sell.

wait..did you see gta4 numbers.....being a sequel does not help titles considering ninja gaiden didnt do to well.....I am quite surprised with lbp's numbers considering its a platform game and cute...I would of thought with all the hype that was generated at the TGS for this game it would of boosted sales for it... ..no one remembers the giant sackboy walking around tgs? there was plenty of hype for this game..especially in japan where most people thought it would sell like gangbusters.

With the confusion that reigned with the LBP temporary withdrawal, I'd say this title will do very well in Japan. It is not a front-loaded game and once well-done user-made levels start to appear, LBP will be selling 3-5k per week for months to come.

Yup. Like what most people said, LBP is a Western title. Very, very few Western games sell in Japan. That is why Sony is bundling the game over there to get notice. 30ks 1st day is actually decent. It's means it's capable of getting 100ks lifetime in Japan. Think about it.

LBP is pretty much a leg-based game IMO, so its still early to tell how well it will do... but regards, even if it will do only 100k lt in Japan, I wouldent be surprised, but in the same time even if it would pass the 500k I still wouldent be :P GTA debuted pretty well tough :)

LBP was never really a title that looked catered to the Japanese audience. Not to mention its so hard right now to have a new IP succeed in Japan that its just another thing against it. I never expected this title to do well their anyways.

GTA IV sales on the other hand are pretty good but of course this will have huge dropoffs after its about 90k-100k first week.

I mean, it's a new IP, and I don't think anyone expected the game to have a flashy Japanese opening.

The game will likely go to 70k this week (these numbers exclude Controller/Game bundles and 80 GB PS3 bundles). That's good for a new IP.

PS3 should get the boost it needs - but maybe not more than 30k-50k. Still, its a 10x improvement.

I never thought LBP would set hearts alight in Japan - its early days anyway. Its only day#1 as well - it could be a "weekend" game.

GTA is actually VERY popular in Japan if people remember how the last few sold. And its nice to see GTA PS3 > GTA 360 (x2).

LBP did as well as it should have in Japan. Seriously...it's a Western level creator platformer. Did people really have uber high expectations for this? It will do well in the West, but not in Japan. If you want to see some more decent PS3 sales look forward to WKS and much later FF XIII (before FF XIII though there will be that FF XIII demo), and possibly RE5 which comes in March IIRC. March should be a good month for the PS3 I'd say.

But beyond that the PS3 doesn't really have a whole lot.

I'm not surprised at Grand Theft Auto sales, which should be hugely front-loaded. I did think Little Big Planet would do a bit better.

Really, the interesting thing is what happens NEXT week. Can PS3 sustain a few weeks of higher sales? Obviously this week will see a big surge with (yet another) new model and two important releases. If PS3 sales drop back below 10k next week - time to worry.

LBP does not sell well in Japan because it is made by western company. The most successful western games in Japan is GTA:SA which sell about 400k (not sure).

I think it's too soon to determine. Usually Japan posts first day sales Monday of the next week. LBP just got released yesturday. I don't think that's enough fair time to calculate accurate figures. I believe next week LBP will have more sales than this week combined.

LBP didn't have that much hype in Japan(from what I can tell). Also, WKC and Naruto will sell because Naruto games generally do well in Japan and WKC is the PS3 exclusive for Japanese gamers not to mention that game is very hyped.

My predictions are not too far off.

I had GTA IV PS3 to beat LBP and At about 100k first week and GTAIV 360 to sell 50k.

I did say LBP would not sell many and got shouted down many times.

Right WKC will out sell GTAVI on PS3 by a long way as will Fable 2 and Last Remnant.

Thats it for PS3. Japan is done with this console and things are not going to turn around. I can not even remember the last game on the system they liked. I don't count Metal Gear Solid 4 as a game that appeals to Japanese, because if that style of game was what they like, a lot more western style games would be sold. MGS is just a really weird deal, perhapps it is because they are in love with mechs and that is what the gears are.

This drops my expectations on both Naruto and White Knight Chronicals. I see no reason for either of them to sell more than Little Big Planet and GTA respectivly. I will predict right now that after the TLR is released, 360 will outsell PS3 for the remainder of the year.
