I think there is way too much fanboyism effecting some people's judgement on this site. The PS3 boys are calling this an absolute blowout and the 360 fans call this the exact opposite. 1.3 million on the first day is good, but I'm willing to bet that Sony and Konami expected/hoped it would sell better. But, the Sony fans are correct in the fact that MGS has always been more of a niche title.

1.3 million on the first day is good, but I'm willing to bet that Sony and Konami expected/hoped it would sell better. But, the Sony fans are correct in the fact that MGS has always been more of a niche title. (The gaming media are the ones who have been portraying MGS4 as Sony's Halo) We really need titles like GT5, FF13 and GOW to see how a major PS3 launch will be received. We'll have to wait a few weeks to see if MGS4 has some legs or not, until then I don't think anyone can call the MGS4 launch anything but a success.

PS: Am I the only one who thinks that LBP will flop? I believe it will sell ok, but not nearly as much as people think it will. I really think that LBP won't sell as well as MGS4 over its lifetime. (But I could be wrong)

that was the figure march 31st. 2008 and assuming that the number of PS3's is 13 million. Then what was it estimated to 1.3 million copies of MGS4 sold first day was 1.3 million. thats 10% of all PS3 owners buying a copy for a niche title.

Hmmmm...I've been hearing about how AMAZING a line-up the PS3 had, and MSG4 would lead the charge, but it failed to meet the levle of other exclusives, when in the exact position...good first week, and not top teir, imho.

Of course this is anecdotal but I know a few people who got PS3's lately, they all ended up buying a 60GB off eBay because all they could buy new was the 40GB. Which obviously doesn't add a sale to the numbers here.

But you are calculating that the above numbers were always a set number.

It says "Over 350k in japan" and "Over 400k in NA" Over is the keyword.

lets say they rounded up to 1.3 from 1.28. (Not un common to round up)

Also lets say that the extrapolated preliminary number to also include Spain. But Spain didn't get their shipment. so lets say 50k was spain.

1.28 - .05 = 1.23. (Spains numbers they were estimating that never came in because of a truck strike apparently)
1.23 - .43 = .80 (other numbers we already have)
.80 - .35 = .45 (Japanese numbers)
.45 - .40 = .05 (NA's numbers)

50k/2 = 25k (Can Japanese and NA have 25k over their numbers above?)

No tv marketing? Where do you live and what station do you watch. Here in Philly USA every other commercial on Cartoon Network and G4 after 10pm starts out with the Konami Logo followed by Hideo Kojima FoxHound logo, followed by "In a future where war for profit has taken over..." and ends with MGS4 for PS3.

I guess they only focused their ad dollars in Philly, I doubt it but it that could explain your general assesment.

@darth: I hope you're not talking about me, because a) I said it would make a profit, but not an impressive one for such a major project and b) I've hailed the sales already a few times before and I don't see how I'm bringing down the sales by answering a question from Mesoteto.

I think that heavily depends on what Konami is doing (Marketing, Ads?)
I heard 12$ for retail, 10$ for sony(for a critical exclusive like this perhaps not?) ~ 38$ for everything incl. development, ads, disc burning etc. But I think all budget discussion is totally random, only Konami knows.

Meso: The rumoured budget for the game is $75 million. Konami gets about $ 20,- per game sold (that's the standard figure). So it would take around 3.5 million sold to break even. Maybe a bit less if they receive more money for the Limited Editions.
That is if Konami gets full pay for the bundled versions and if advertising costs are included in the budget.

So it will definitely make Konami some money. Though it's not a big profitmaker. If it sells 4.5 million copies Konami will make some 25 million dollar profit before taxes. Not bad, but a return on investment of ~20% is a bit low on a project like MGS4.

To Bardicverse: You say the PS3 is tracking like the Gamecube? Then 360 must be tracking worse than the Gamecube because PS3 is selling faster in the same time period. The PS3 is not selling nearly as well as the Wii, but there are many reasons for that, and none of them are because it is a better system. I don't believe the Wii is a fad, but I also don't believe developers will flock to it either. Its PS3 or 360 this generation for big games.

That's because the overall core collection was a whole lot bigger, but the PS2 had its share of casual games as well. Singstar, Guitar Hero, Buzz, Eye Toy games, Dance Dance Revolution games, Space Channel, etc. Of course... no one can match the WII, which is very unfortunate. I don't mind casual games being released on the WII and several I have of my own but there's just "too many" and overloading the amount of core games on the WII :-(

PS3 is tracking way ahead of the GC in "others". That is at a price point higher then the GC was every at. Q1 next year the PS3 should pass total GC sales, and Q3 it should pass XBox1 (and probably 360) sales.

BEST GAME EVER! I mean its a masterpiece. What sucks is the way gaming is headed, I doubt we will ever see another game on this level for a long time.
I almost wouldnt mind this game going multiplatform so Xbox gamers can see why many PS3 gamers arent impressed with this generation. This is really what next gen should be about, not about "ZOMG 60 FPS with no framedrop!" Or "holy crap story telling where every play through is different." Its not specs that make a game great, its the experience you have while playing. You shouldnt notice or care about FPS or textures while playing a game because you're caught up in the game.

MGS4 is the experience we all have been waiting for. If you dont have a PS3 borrow someones. This game is so far ahead of everything else I dont know if another game can satisfy me ever again.

I disagree. the Wii will be replaced within the next 2 years and so too the 360. this is when the PS3 will overtake the Wii and head towars PS2 sales. U gotta realize that the sales of the PS3 are in line with the PS2 at around the same stage [with much less sofware and much more HW abilities too].

PS3 probably won't catch the Wii. But Sony put the PS3 out also to help Blu ray, and they stand to make a lot of money off that as well.
