Team Fortress 2 Server Owners Begin Banning F2P Players - News

When Valve announced that Team Fortress 2 was to become a full-on free-to-play title, I think it's safe to say that we were all shocked by it. Some were shocked in a good way, while some who paid for Team Fortress 2 became upset and angry, demanding that Valve refund them.
Now the anger of some paying customers has taken a strange turn. A new mod for Team Fortress 2 server owners was made public recently which, when applied, will automatically kick free-to-play users.
Here's what the official description has to say:
Are you fed up with your server full of people that don't know one end of the direct miss from the other?
People that feel the need to just keep coming back after you permaban them?
Or just people that haven't contributed some of their hard earned cash to your favourite war-themed hat simulator? Then you know what you need? This plugin.
According to the mod's statistics, there are currently 12 servers using it.
While some may argue that this is completely unfair, at the end of the day, it is their server, so they're allowed to make their own rules. Many F2P users have simply stated that they'll be sure to mark and avoid these type of "elitist" servers.
What are your thoughts on this? Is this just a step too far?

Sounds like crybaby bulls#*% to me. "Waah! They got a free copy and I didn't!" I bought the game years ago and had my fun with it, and don't begrudge the fact that people are getting it for free now. When you pay to see a movie in the theater, do you cry about it years later when people get to watch it on TBS?
It's got nothing to do with that. It's to stop hackers and griefers running riot on their servers.
Then how do you explain the line in the description that reads, "Or just people that haven't contributed some of their hard earned cash to your favourite war-themed hat simulator?" That sounds pretty discriminatory toward F2P players to me.

This is the main reason the plugin was created.
Hackers can bypass VAC by creating new accounts and then getting the game for free again.
This plugin puts a stop to that.
If you are a free user you can still play. You just have to upgrade your account by buying one of the hats/items.
I payed for this game a long time ago. Valve DOES NOT owe me any money for making it f2p. I've gotten to enjoy it for countless hours before it became f2p so it is completely worth it. Now if I had bought the game the day before it became f2p I might have been angry.
Sounds like sour grapes to me.
if their reason was cheating, I'd understand, it's really annoying with free games because they just keep coming back and you can't do shit (I was once a server admin of a UT99 mod, no CD-keys for that, we had to have full time admins or at least have one on notice, so someone would call him to ban a cheater)
if their reason was cheating, I'd understand. it's annoying enough with a paid game. wtih a free game you're asking for a massive amount of cheaters, especially FPS.
It's always this way, some idiots ruin the fun everyone. Damn kiddies, there should a maturity test before you can play online for some games.
I bought TF2 on sale some time ago but I hardly play it so I'm really as bad as any new person, haha.
While I doubt the reliability of the tactic, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. In Starcraft you would often see matches labeled as Expert or Noob matches. You knew to stay away from the expert matches unless you were really damn good. Noob matches usually got trolled by good but heartless players. If there was a way for those match creators to try enforcing that skill level check, that would have been nice. But as I stated before, I don't think their method is entirely accurate.
Tribes also came out with free versions later on, but nobody cared. Stop being a baby and let people enjoy a great game

I'm surprised as a player who has purchased TF2 that there are people actually annoyed by the F2P issue. Sure there's a noob issue, but just like any other game the players will mature over time.
People demanding refunds are complete idiots.
Banning free-to-play users might be a good solution for the time being however. Although down the line, EVERYBODY will be free-to-play users, so this attitude will just foster grumpy-old-man-servers.

I understand the annoyance with new F2P players that don't know how to properly play the game. It can ruin the game for a lot of people.

I consider it a good way to get rid of hackers and annoying griefers. Kicking honest players is an unfortunate side-effect, but what can we do about it...
That reminds me of that deal with Cheater's Lament hat that pretty much separated player base into owners and non-owners of it (hat was given to people that did not idle on servers to get drops, which was considered cheating).
I bought The Orange Box on sale over a year ago, I don't really care about that spent money anymore. If TF2 is F2P now, its fine for me.
Considering their servers are public and yet the only people who don't get to play are people who have the free version, this is a form of discrimination. If they had a invite only server it would be different.
It would be like putting up flyer for a BBQ at a park then not letting woman in.
I never new this game was that fun. I have been playing this game for about a week and I am having a blast with it.
