Shigeru Miyamoto First Game Developer to Receive Japan's Order of Culture Award - News
by William D'Angelo , posted 2 days ago / 2,042 ViewsShigeru Miyamoto is the first video game developer to receive Japan's Order of Culture award.
Japan's Order of Culture award is given to men and women who have made significant impact on Japan’s art, literature, science, technology, or culture in general. It is conferred by the Emperor of Japan in person and is considered equivalent to the highest rank (Grand Cordon) of the Order of the Rising Sun, the Order of the Sacred Treasure, and the Order of the Precious Crown.
"I feel incredibly embarrassed, but I am truly honored to have been selected for such a prestigious award," said Miyamoto (via Go Nintendo). "As I always say, I don't make games by myself. This award is the result of working together with many people, so I intend to accept it as a representative of them.
"Especially recently, I've had the opportunity to work with many people in genres other than games, such as Universal Studios Japan's Super Nintendo World and the film business. I would like to share the joy of this award with all of you.
"Recently, there have been a lot of anniversaries, such as the 40th anniversary of Zelda, and I myself have been introducing myself as having been making games for 45 years. However, when I think about it, I joined Nintendo in 1977 and immediately started working on games, so it's actually been 50 years. It's easier to count, so I 'll talk about it as 50 years this time.
"50 years ago, I became involved with games, a medium that was barely tangible at the time, and I've been able to work in this field ever since. I think I'm receiving this kind of treatment because I was there from the very beginning, and I feel like I've had a very lucky life."
A life-long and avid gamer, William D'Angelo was first introduced to VGChartz in 2007. After years of supporting the site, he was brought on in 2010 as a junior analyst, working his way up to lead analyst in 2012 and taking over the hardware estimates in 2017. He has expanded his involvement in the gaming community by producing content on his own YouTube channel and Twitch channel. You can follow the author on Bluesky.

Well deserved!
Few people can be said to have had more impact on Japan's culture. He's in the big leagues with Kurosawa, Toriyama, and Miyazaki.
When I flew into Narita Airport earlier this year, I was greeted by a huge mural of the Super Mario gang, welcoming me to Japan. Nintendo toys and stores are everywhere there, and it's not just Pokemon. And then there was the moment at the end of the 2016 Olympics when Shinzo Abe heralded the then-upcoming 2020 Tokyo games dressed as Mario.
