VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.
This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.
Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Pretty good sales for PS5.
The race between US & Europe numbers during the PS5 generation is actually quite fascinating to watch.
On the software side of things, I think 2025, 2026 and 2027 are sure as hell one of the best 3 year period ever in gaming history.
It's on one hand a true pitty that console prices only went up since 2020, otherwise we probably would have seen the PS5 already breaking the 100M wall sooner.
On the other hand the superb software lineup still keeps interest in buying consoles up, which "tragically" doesn't really lead Sony to even think about subsidizing too much or at all.
But for the sake (without real purpose except fun) of discussing great sale paces, it's really a bit sad that the current console generation was confronted by so many obstacles, let alone the complete absence of a furious battle PS5 v. Series we all had expected to see.
I guess high prices are OK for mugs. Sony may as well raise the prices again.
They got the library to back the sales up. People not stupid, we shop based off value.
I sense some irritation in this message.
Nintendo just raised their prices to
Consoles overall are actually still kinda cheap compared to lots of other high-end consumer electronics. Phones, Tablets, laptops, TVs etc.
