Sony CEO Says PlayStation Hasn't Fixed a Release Date for PS6 Yet

Sony CEO Says PlayStation Hasn't Fixed a Release Date for PS6 Yet - News

by William D'Angelo , posted 1 hour ago / 328 Views

Sony CEO Hiroko Totoki in a new interview with the Wall Street Journal revealed PlayStation hasn't decided on a release date yet for the PS6.

Multiple analysts are predicting the PS5 will launch in 2027, however, they added due to the component shortage that could change and the release for the console could be pushed back.

"Totoki said the company still hasn't fixed a date for PS6’s launch," reads the article.

The component shortages and increased prices for storage and memory due to the building of AI data centers are an issue for Sony and Totoki said, "Considering that importance, we need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape."

Quite honestly, if they are going to do anything they need to consider a less powerful unit/upgrade over other recent iterations to save on costs so people can actually buy it. The PS5 isn't exactly slacking in power and the graphical difference between gens isn't worth the cost, Nintendo has shown this and the fact games like RDR2 or Horizon still look great today (even if the difference between 1 and 2 were noticeable). Interactivity is the key, make it unique and worth buying. I think Sept 2028 seems likely as long as ram costs come down.

Also, typo in the post. "Multiple analysts are predicting the PS5 will launch in 2027"... will edit my post once corrected.

From what MLID was saying (no idea how accurate he is) this is exactly what they were planning on doing. The issue is that's still a very expensive system. I think they just need to release in 2027 and expect a slow start similar to PS3. Hope prices for hardware eventually come down during the gen so they can drop prices like people expect and then people will start upgrading in mass.

2028 is my guess or perhaps 2029. Although the tech is already ancient by that date.

I am guessing the original plan was November 2027, but with the shortages it might get delayed to sometime in 2028. I'd expect Sony is more willing to delay the release than Microsoft is.

The tech is already ancient on release, however computer hardware might not advance as fast as we want anymore because prices of components are going up not down. A big part of computer technology getting stronger that quickly was also that you got twice the amount of power for the same price every so often. Now it is basically the other way around for memory at least.

I think 2027 is still the target date. PS has a place in line. They can't lose their place and then just hop back in whenever they want. With the way things are going with AI it doesn't work like that anymore. I think they still come out in 2027 and just plan for slow adoption. Hope prices come down in 2028 or 2029 and then drop the price of the console. Also there is no guarantee prices drop in 2028-2029 so holding the hardware back could accomplish nothing at all. Hell prices could keep rising.
