PlayStation Reportedly Overhauling Horizon Hunters Gathering Following Negative Feedback - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 19 August 2026 / 3,015 ViewsPublisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Guerrilla Games have reportedly started to overhaul the tactical three-player co-op action game, Horizon Hunters Gathering, following negative player feedback, according to people familiar with the company’s plans that spoke with Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.
The people said the developer has been working to reboot the game since June. The plan is to remove the "live-service component and turn it into more of a traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode and a far smaller scope."
The game has not been cancelled, however, the studio has told staff they will have through December to impress executives with their next milestone. Many of the developers on the game have been reassigned to a different project that will also be evaluated at the end of the year.
Horizon Hunters Gathering was announced for the PlayStation 5 and PC in February of this year.
The next mainline single-player Horizon game "is still far, far away," according to Schreier. This is due the nearly all of Guerrilla Games having worked on Horizon Hunters Gathering for the last few years.

Another one of those live-service failures.
And we never saw it again.
They really went all out on their bad decision making this gen.
LMAOOOOOOOOOO
One of the reasons physical gamea are dying is because of this.
Sony keep failing on finding a golden goose live service game, burning insane amounts of money and time from their most talented devs, and yet profit margins need to go up.
They still could make numbers go up before AI fucking up the world, but instead of dropping the failer attempts at live services over and over again, they will drop physical media to increase the margins.
Keep burning money and time, and driving your customers away, that is sure to pay up in the future...
Such depressing news from Sony, coming from a HUGE Horizon fan. Just to think, 4 years of completely wasted dev time from Guerrilla Games. That time could have been invested into a proper Horizon 3 single-player adventure and have that lined up to be a KILLER launch title for PS6... :(
Well lets just hope that this delay will result in a better product.
I would almost agree except at this point, there is like a 50/50 chance of it being cancelled entirely and never releasing. And I would guess no game is worse than a bad live service game (maybe?) haha
This isn't the negative feedback PlayStation should be focused on, trust me.
Well, I would be at least somewhat more interested in a more traditional multiplayer title set in the Horizon universe than a live service game which I would never get, especially if it had local co-op, but I'd still much rather have a proper single player Horizon.
Sadly most of the studio was reportedly working in the live service game, so despite Horizon 2 being a 2022 games, Horizon 3 will be at best a 2029 game...
They really screwed up their best studios over this, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, and Santa Monica only avoided it because Bluepoint took the charge on making the God of War live service game, so Santa Monica was fine but Bluepoint literally died because of that.
I've legit heard people say they were disappointed the Last of Us MP game didn't happen. And according to rumours on Bluepoints demise they were offered to do other things but they chose to do the GoW game and it didn't pan out. What gamers wanted is for them to just be remaking other people's games forever... what a career.
This discussion on this game has made me realise gamers know nothing about what they want.
All they don't want is Sony making anything but story driven narrative games... then they'll complain about getting burnt out by them.
Hermen Hulst strikes again...
Feels sorry for the devs, all that work put in just to rethink because "gamers" had a cry. Could have been great but we'll never know.
Just can the damn thing and cut your losses. Read the room, idiots at the top.
If they did one or two life service games at a time to see how things shake out, sure. But 12? What is this insane dicision making? They had something that worked really well for them and then decided to put on the breaks to try something super high risk. What did they expect? And don't give me this "not at the cost of single player" crap. I cannot even keep up with the amount of talent lost, mountains of money burned and projects scrapped. How many studios will close until they remember what their rapidly shrinking customer base wants from them?
The news of Horizon 3 being years away when it should have been a 2027/2028 release really struck a nerve with me since Horizon: Forbidden West is my best and most played PS5 game and I’m waiting patiently for the 3rd.
I hate Live Service with a passion.
A generation full of Ls for PlayStation and they keep on coming. Love to see it.
Will be yet another failure of a live service MP game from Sony this gen. Friendly reminder that Factions II, the sequel to one of the best MP games of all time, died while trash like this or Marathon could live.
I will never understand how Sony is dominating this gen like they are. Their game output has been a dumpster fire.
This is the issue when you neglect Multiplayer modes/games with majority of your releases. Sony have forgotten how to make them, without relying on outside assistance.
