PS5 Slim Digital Edition Now Comes With a Smaller SSD in Europe

PS5 Slim Digital Edition Now Comes With a Smaller SSD in Europe - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 17 September 2025 / 9,702 Views

Following a report earlier this month, Sony has begun rolling out the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition with a smaller SSD in Europe (spotted by Billbill-Kun).

The PS5 Slim Digital Edition used to come with a 1TB SSD, however, the new model comes with an 825GB SSD. The new model has been spotted in at least France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, according to Billbill-Kun.

As of right now, only the PS5 Slim Digital Edition comes with the smaller 825GB SSD. The standard PS5 with a disc drive still comes with a 1TB SSD. There is also no word if the smaller SSD model will come to other regions.

It is speculated the reason for the decreased storage is to avoid another price increase in Europe. The PS5 Digital Edition was originally priced at €399 when the console launched in 2020, before it increased to €449, then €499 in April 2025. That is a €100 in about 4 and a half years.

Sony Interactive Entertainment increased the price of the PS5 in the US on August 21 by $50 on all three models due to "a challenging economic environment."

What an awful decision. Specially considering the owners of the digital version are gonna need that space even more.

The launch version of the PS5 came with 825GB also so it's really just going back to how it launched

It's also nearly 5 years since the system launched. These components have not gotten more expensive to make/acquire in that time frame. The system has old tech in it.

its 5 years and it cost more. So its not the same as release.
People rly shouldnt defend bad decisions of companies, even if they are big fans of said companies. (unless ofc they work for them, witch is very likely)

nothing to do with defending. It's just a simple fact that PS5 launched with 825GB storage

Yeah and Xbox 360 launched with 20GB and by 2010 get a new one cheaper with more storage. Storage goes up as game data demand does. Really take Sony's dick out of your mouth for once.

I live in Europe and PS5 is the only relevant console here. Being in a location where people only like PS5 doesn't make someone a boot licker

Everyone needs the storage, discs need to be installed too. But yeah, Shitty move.

I wonder if this SSD is old stock from the launch model...

That's my thought as well since they no longer make the original models. Sucks its gotten more expensive. If anything they should've put this SSD in the slim disc edition, at least that would make a little more sense.

I cannot fathom at this stage how these companies are going to launch next gen when this gens consoles are literally going up in price 5 years later. Come on, surely the parts are still not that expensive now? It's 5 year old tech.

It's cliche, but it's greed. All of it. If we don't buy, it will stop.

  • +4
ST.Tachyon The Fury (on 17 September 2025)

As its said, its greed, companies saw in 2020 that they can get away with any price.
People are still going to buy their products, even if they increase price by 100%
The tech that is in PS5 and Xbox are for sure much much cheaper then what it was in 2020, there is zero reason other then greed to increase, instead of lower price.

PS4 use is still high enough right now, that the plan is obviously to integrate hardware into a larger ecosystem, kind of like what you see with Apple and the iPhone.

I doubt anyone is going to need a PS6 until at least 2030, but it'll still be available for anyone who wants stronger hardware sooner.

This is a good thing, it means longer support for the console you own while offering up tech choices for those who want it.

I don't know how anyone doesn't tire from the same thing for more than five years. At like four, I'm ready for something new. Seven? That thing is likely going to be collecting dust.

twintail JackHandy (on 18 September 2025)

had my ps4 for like 10 years before jumping onto PS5 haha, but I hear you: some ppl want something new sooner and I think there's an audience there. But I also feel that with the gens bleeding into one another, more users end up winning. If you want PS6 gen sooner, go for it: if you want to wait because of pricing or being ok with PS5, then you're good too.

It's not the chips inside the machine that excites people, it's the games. New games come out all the time, whereas the hardware side is going into diminishing returns more and more.

  • +2
JackHandy Dante9 (on 18 September 2025)

Yes, that's true. And I think that's why I'm gaming less and less on modern consoles, and why my enthusiasm is at an all-time low for the industry. Compared to the 80's and 90's, things are moving at a crippled snail's pace... perhaps even slower than that.

Pemalite The Fury (on 17 September 2025)

NAND manufacturers ended up cutting production earlier in the year to curb the over-abundance of NAND chips in the market which kept prices low.

Add in the A.I. Boom which is starting to gobble up NAND like no tomorrow... And it doesn't bode well for pricing of all other consumer electronic devices.

Sony would have been better off absorbing this cost in my opinion... And releasing a 256GB SKU where consumers can just throw in their own SSD at a super low price to make up the difference in profit margin.

The Fury Pemalite (on 18 September 2025)

Considering they made record profits, I agree. Considering they make most of their PS money from digital sales from commission on games and in game purchases, you'd think it's better for them to get more people in the door to spend money.

Now the sad thing is, it's still selling really well yet in my view I'm like "how?" there are so many used on the market now, why would you buy new at the inflated costs?

Ill assume its 825gig not including the OS, so back to 690gig available storage?

Yes.

Tridrakious Azzanation (on 19 September 2025)

Yeah, instead of having dedicated storage for the OS, they take from from the consumer can use. They still claim there is 825GB, because technically there is, however, they eat into that just for the operating system.

I hope people realize they're doing that to actually try stave off the tariffs.

What would people rather have? a higher price or a bigger ssd?
