The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 614,429 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 6,737,609 - Switch

Total Lead: 7,355,279 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 143,488,591

DS Total Sales: 150,843,870

September 2024 is the 91st month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.61 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

funny how NSW was supposed to be Nintendo's "swan song" in the console market, just for it to go on and outsell their most successful system.

It's a matter of when rather than "if" at this point. Only a matter of time before Switch surpasses it. Pretty crazy to think about especially with how long it was thought to be impossible to reach but the Switch is gonna do it.

Which would make the Switch the Emperor.

Fun Fact: If Nintendo releases the Switch Up no later than may 4 2025 it will be the system to last longest without a replacement, surpassing even the Xbox 360's 8 years. Game Boy lasted longer of course. But its quite impressive for the handheld. 155 million minimum till march 2027 is a 100% lock at this point!!

I think the cross is likely to happen during next year, but not during the holiday seasons. Nintendo definitely killed the DS too early. That's why we have to wait that long for a Switch successor. Good that they've learned from their mistakes (from a commercial point of view).

Its more than Nintendo doesn't have the software ready for switch 2 yet apparently

Yeah, it does seem to feel like the hardware could have been released this year for sure, but Nintendo wanted to be sure they had a good software lineup. And that doesn't just mean for the launch, but the period after it - having good steady stream of games releasing in the summer, fall and winter 2025 is essential to keep momentum up.

I've had people tell me Nintendo consoles are in decline. Their reasoning? Switch hasn't sold as much as DS and Wii combined. Because apparently a system that you only need to buy one of needs to outsell a pair of systems that you need to buy separately.
