This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360.
The Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in November 2005 in North America and December 2005 in Europe and Japan. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

April 2023 is the 30th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.25 million units.
In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has caught up to the Xbox Series X|S by 0.69 million units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently ahead by 3.23 million units.
The Xbox Series X|S has sold 21.67 million units in 30 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 18.44 million units. Month 30 for the Xbox Series X|S is April 2023 and for the Xbox 360 is April 2008.
The Xbox 360 did not reach current Xbox Series X|S sales until month 36 where it had sold 22.02 million units.
The Xbox 360 crossed 20 million units sold in month 34, 30 million in month 43, and 40 million in month 54. The Xbox 360 sold 85.73 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 64.06 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

this graph makes it look like the xbox series will outsell the 360. which i doubt will happen.
X360 peaked late due to Kinect (year 5 onward). Xbox Series had a better start, though. I guess Microsoft needs to do something similar to breathe new life into Series.
Two consoles vs one. With slim consoles it will be three vs two.
The 360 launched with two SKUs (with and without HDD), and later expanded it to three (Xbox 360 Elite). And then there were console revisions for the 360 too. It's not an apples-to-apples comparison to count any future Xbox Series revisions without also counting Xbox 360 revisions.
Yes, the Series S is a different type of entry-level SKU than the Xbox 360 Arcade was, but both offered a lower entry price point than the competition.
It feels like those next couple of months will be critic in the Series case due to the lack of major exclusive software that can bolster the console sales.
At least until Starfield comes in but this is still a long way to go ...
