Sony Interactive Entertainment and Guerrilla Games revealed the first gameplay footage of Horizon Forbidden West captured on the PlayStation 5 in a brand new State of Play.

Read the latest information on the game via the PlayStation Blog below:

Horizon Forbidden West continues six months after the events of Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy, a machine hunter, has travelled west to investigate a mysterious and deadly blight. In these uncharted lands, she will meet strange new tribes and encounter ever more deadly machines. Together with old friends and new companions, she must brave this dangerous frontier to find the answers she needs to save life on Earth.

In the State of Play gameplay footage, Aloy has sent her loyal friend Erend into the remains of San Francisco to recover an important artifact. But he quickly runs into trouble, encountering a rebel faction of the Tenakth tribe – vicious fighters who have somehow acquired the power to override machines. Aloy must cross the ruins and fight multiple enemies to rescue her friend and continue her journey.

This dangerous and unfamiliar land is full of challenges and threats, but Aloy will have new tools to help her on her way. The Pullcaster speeds up climbing, getting her quickly out of trouble; the Shieldwing allows her to safely descend from great heights (or surprise enemies from above); and with the Diving Mask, a whole new underwater world is open for exploration. Not to mention big upgrades to her Focus, which now shows areas that allow free-climbing and gives her the ability to override more machines for mounts or combat.

Horizon Forbidden West

Speaking of combat, Horizon Forbidden West puts the emphasis on tactics and choice by giving the player a huge variety of weapons. Aloy’s trusty Spear is good for close combat and enables a new set of combos. Bows with specialized ammo types strip armor off machines to expose their weak spots. Adhesive grenades can be fired from slingshots, temporarily stalling foes. Plus many more, and all of them can be upgraded at a workbench.

Aloy won’t just be dealing with human enemies. The game also features a big new selection of deadly machines: Sunwings in the sky, Clawstriders and Tremortusks on land, Snapmaws and the smaller (yet not to be underestimated) Burrowers in the water. That’s only the beginning, as many more will be revealed throughout the massive open world of Horizon Forbidden West. You’ll have to be smart and creative to take them all down.

Thanks for watching our Horizon Forbidden West gameplay reveal! We don’t have an exact release date yet, but development is on track and we’ll have an update for you very soon.

Horizon Forbidden West is in development for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

Noticing allot of pixel crawl on hair and finer details, likely a result of a checkerboarding technique... Or a low rendering resolution+upscaling. - And hair seems to clip through the weapon.

But otherwise it's visually stunning, some really good subsurface scattering going on with the water and materials.
Will be a day 1 purchase for sure.

"There's this wooly-mammoth-lookin' dino robot stomping around while raptors and raiders attack me! BETTER FIXATE ON THE RENDERING PATTERN AND CLIPPING OF THESE THREE STRANDS OF HAIRS!"

Very nice. At first glance it doesn't look like a dramatic step up from the first game from a technical standpoint (understandable for a cross gen title), but then you start to notice all the finer details like the new weather and water systems and improvements all over to things like particles, interactive elements, lighting, etc. Enhancements to gameplay like improved platforming, swimming, and dino combat are most welcome as well. Can't wait for release.

Are you kidding? Did you watch the 4K video of the presentation, or did you watch it in live stream quality?

Because the leap over the first game is quite obvious from the get go.

Maybe he means compared to the pro version. It had a 4k mode if I remember correctly.

That’s what I was gaming on last gen, and it’s still not in the same league.

i don't expect a huge leap, as the game still is among the best looking games ever made.

It's going to be hard to notice technical improvements on youtube videos. The compression is to much. There's no HDR as well.

This is by far the prettiest game I have ever seen. This is some truly next level shit.

The gameplay looks like it's on a whole new level! Have they confirmed if you can ride flying machines?

Wow I'm getting downvoted for asking a question! Those salty tears must be stinging the trolls lol

Another stunning example which in my view puts paid to the idea that cross-gen titles must have sub-standard graphics. These shots look fabulous!

Who's downvoting all these positive comments? Must be nintendo fans still rocking 540P.

Why is she talking under water? Serious question^^

Vendrom crissindahouse (on 28 May 2021)

Internal monologue maybe

  • +2

She has got a mask on so she can breath under water. So she can talk as much under water as she can on land.

  • +5

Ahh didn't see that she had a mask on. Was pretty late when I commented...

  • +1

Yeah, no wonder, I did not see it either. But I read somewhere that she has a mask and oxygen is no concern in under water sections. If I remember correctly, you can see the mask in the reveal trailer though. And I honestly think it could be some sort of combination - like it is part internal monologue aswell. I kinda like game characters unrealistically often commenting on stuff that is happening, since it is often the case that I wanted, or actually did say the same thing while playing the game. Makes me relate more.

Game looks like trash. Environment is static (foliage doesn't react to the character running through it for example), rubble just disappears instead of changing the surroundings, etc.

I wouldn't even bother giving him a reply. He's just trolling as per normal with his post history. If this was a Nintendo game he would be all over it.
