Intellivision's Retro Console Amico Top 10,000 Pre-orders in One Week

Intellivision's Retro Console Amico Top 10,000 Pre-orders in One Week - News

Intellivision Entertainment's upcoming retro video game console, the Amico, has received over 10,000 pre-orders for the VIP version, which is available for presales until Tuesday. Major retailers have also ordered more than 100,000 units.

Pre-orders for the VIP version opened on March 31. The black and white versions are available for $249, while the woodgrain version is available for $279. The VIP versions include two controllers, six games, a $25 gift card for more games, 3D Lenticular playing card autographed by Tallarico, and three digital video game soundtrack albums.

"And that's one of the amazing things about this," said Intellivision CEO Tommy Tallarico. "All this is happening during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

"It’s really good considering we’re the new kids, the underdogs. Like Rocky Balboa."

The Amica is set to launch in October 2020.

Thanks VentureBeat.

But why? The system was a complete bust in the first place and this seems to be vaporware as is.

Seems a good number for a retro of a console that even at that time wasn`t really looked after.

I'm probably nitpicking, but I wouldn't call around 3 million sales in the early 80's, and holding a reported 20% of the 1982 video game market a console that "wasn't really looked after". The Intellivision like the ColecoVision were successful consoles at their time that had their lifespans cut short by the North American Video Game Crash of 1984. All too often the impact these consoles had in their marketplace at the time get mischaracterized/underappreciated due to their unfortunate timing of being pre-crash systems. I do agree with you that 10,000+ preorders does seem a good number for a retro console pushing pre-crash nostalgia. Very similar to what the Atari VCS Indiegogo campaign pulled in, and Atari has the bigger footprint in video game history. Between the 2, I think the Amico has much better prospects personally. The people behind it are actually video game development oriented and have developed a working console and controllers. While the people behind the Atari VCS are just a holding company that doesn't appear to have any clue what they are doing even though they are only trying to produce a Linux computer that resembles the original VCS.

I wasn't aware of it having 3M sales and 20% of the market at that time.
I was considering it not much looked after based on knowing the console but basically no one I talk or know even mentioning it.
Myself I would buy the original console for collection purposes. But these retro looking consoles I rather play emulator on PC or just keep playing current gen gaming on consoles.

My grandfather had one in the 80's which leaves me with nostalgia bias for it. It's my second favorite pre-crash console behind the ColecoVision (which is what my family owned). Most people owned an Atari 2600 back then, but Coleco had released an adapter to play 2600 games on the ColecoVision (something unfathomable in today's console market space), which is what we did. Anyhow, though weaker in hardware than the Colecovision, the Intellivision still had some very good games for its time (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Snafu, etc). It was also well regarded for its sports titles. My grandfather was a golfer and bowler, and enjoyed playing PGA Golf and PBA Bowling on the Intellivision.

Some random people paid ten bucks for an Intellivision logo? What could possibly go wrong? Why do people have to go and wreck the past for a quick buck/scam? Ahem... Atari VCS.

You can say what you want about whether you think the Amico will flop or not. But to label Tommy Tallarico (a video game developer/composer) and a group of original Intellivision team members who bought a stake in Intellivision Productions from Keith Robinson's estate (former owner and founder) as "some random people who paid 10 bucks for an Intellivision logo" is a pretty disingenuous of the facts and a misrepresentation of the people who appear to have a lot of passion behind the project. At the very least, it's a physical product that will be released unlike actual scams like the Coleco Chameleon, and has actual games being designed for it unlike the perpetually delayed Atari VCS. That being said, for what's being offered at a $249 price point, it's not my cup of tea either. I still think it's an interesting release though.
