Sony Stops First Party Development for the PlayStation Vita

Sony Stops First Party Development for the PlayStation Vita - News

The writing has been on the wall for some time now, but Sony has no officially halted first party video game development for the PlayStation Vita.

"Currently, first party studios have no titles in development for PS Vita," said Sony Computer Entertainment Senior Vice President Masayasu Ito. "Since third parties are working very hard on PS Vita, SCE’s own strategy is to focus on PS4, which is a new platform."

Minecraft: PS Vita Edition has provided a boost in sales from people under 20 and the upcoming third-party line-up looks promising, according to Ito. Sony has also decided to release new colors for the handheld this fall:

"At the beginning the PS Vita did not resonate with age targets under 20, but now the situation is changing and the popularity with younger demographics is increasing. Minecraft: PS Vita Edition has provided a boost.

In addition to that, a variety of third party  games is also planned for the future, and in order to further accelerate that flow, we decided to release new colors for the PS Vita this fall."

Sony: we stopped supporting the vita 3 years ago, but, great news! We're releasing new colors! That's better than stupid games, right?

Sadness.

Brutal that Sony can't even make say, one game a year for the Vita for the next couple years. As a Vita fan, this isn't good news, but there is still a good amount of support from 3rd parties, and still a lot of new games coming out for it. I just got the deluxe edition of Corpse Party: Blood Drive yesterday. :)

It's funny that they mention Minecraft, Microsoft owns Minecraft so they can't boost any real hardware from any of their own franchises and had to rely on a MS franchise to boost sales LOL.

I am shocked they actually admitted this (although a few years too late).

This is old news. I think we've all known for quite some time that Sony stop supporting the Vita with first party software. This isn't new.

Yeah, i got rid of my VITA not too long ago, due to lack of great non rpg games. I enjoyed it for the first few years, for sure.

It was supposed to be a home console in your pocket. The two triple A games I beat on it AC and uncharted, were good and bad. Nothing was ever a true console experience.

I actually prefer smartphone gaming over a vita. It has a better selection of western games and is actually portable and durable.

I'll always wonder why the Vita didn't get any GTA IV Stories games of it's own.
If they got smaller developers to revive things like Jak and Daxter and Crash and Spyro (I know don't own it) I really think that would've made a difference. Gran Turismo Vita, etc.

And call it PSP2 instead. And just market it with the letters P2P.

The VITA has so many good games and so many more coming. I just wish beyong dreams sony would JUST make gran turismo for vita, and not the psp thing, they dont have to make anything else. The Japanese developers have done great last year and will keep releasing games for a while and there are some true gems on VITA.

The VITA has always been a bit of a deja-vu for when I owned dreamcast, ahead of its time, so much potential, so many good games, but not enough people care and it was never promoted good enough by its creator.

Not all of us care for Japanese gaming. This is also why the vita failed.
