E3 Preview: Goldeneye 007 - Preview
by Karl Koebke , posted on 19 June 2010 / 5,125 ViewsAnyone who played games back in the N64 era has fond memories of long nights of playing Goldeneye 007. The idea of a Wiimake (haha…puns) of Goldeneye is a dream come true for a lot of gamers out there. Brian and I got a chance to sit in on a single player demo of the game and get our hands on the multiplayer.

The demo began at the all to familiar dam level of the movie where James Bond is meeting 006 in order to stop a shipment of high-tech weapons. It was a bit strange seeing Goldeneye James Bond portrayed by someone other than Pierce Brosnan but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. The developers mentioned that they tried to add a bit of physicality to the game to match the new actor’s style.
Multiple routes were possible through the level, with one section where you could either go straight through the door into the next room or jump down into the sewers to take a more stealthy approach. Once the stealthy approach failed a firefight ensued where the developers showed off the cover system as well as destructible cover that force you to keep moving and not just hunker down in one spot.

After taking out the bad guys the two secret agents got into a truck and when they were found out a vehicle sequence started with 006 driving and the player shooting out of the passenger side window. One random thing I did notice was that the ammo was set to infinite for this entire level and every weapon; I don’t think this will remain true in the final build, but it would be an interesting design choice if it was true. James Bond then breached a door and was given some time of slowed down gameplay to shoot everyone behind the door similar to Call of Duty.
Although the developers specified that they couldn’t just remake the game that Rare still owns the right to brick for brick they certainly took a lot of cues from that title. Each level has multiple objectives and you’ll be required to do more depending on the difficulty level you set it at.

Once the single player was done four classic controllers were passed out and Brian decided to be a pansy and make me play multiplayer against the other media members. Everything felt just like the old N64 game with the exception of new arenas and grenades. We were told that the final version would have an experience system that unlocks perks similar to Modern Warfare. One slight annoyance is that there was no indicator for when I killed someone other than their lifeless body so it was hard to tell who got the kill in a heated firefight of more than 3 people.
When the final scores were tallied I was second out of the four media with an award for the quickest lifespan and most accuracy, but the guy who got first cheated by using Oddjob so I count it as a moral victory. Goldeneye 007 is set to release again November 2, 2010 and hopefully they see fit to add a “no Oddjob” mode before all of the online fun ensues.
