E3 2011 Hands-On: Ben 10 Galactic Racing - Preview

Ben 10 has become quite the phenomenum.  A plethora of different shows, toys out the yin yang, and games galore.  Seems I can’t make it through any year at E3 without seeing a new game based around the cartoon.  Nick Simberg and I stopped by D3’s booth to get a look at the alien filled kart racer: Ben 10 Galactic Racing.

Story revolves around 5 planets that are inhabited by aliens from Ben’s arsenal of what has to be by now far more than 10 aliens.  Name seems like a bit of a misnomer these days.  Every 1000 years these aliens get together to race.  That’s it, but then who wants some zany story getting in the way of karting action?

The game has 15 characters, 12 pickups and about 25 tracks and a battle mode of some kind that we were not able to get a look at.  The first track we started on seemed to be modeled around driving through a factory and had at least one area where you could choose to go the long way around or take the much riskier jump under one of those stereotypical random smashing machines they always have in factories.  I really think these places should look at their financials a bit closer because most of the time those machines aren’t even smashing down onto anything, just doing it for the sake of doing it.  There were also some areas where a slimy substance slowed down any vehicle that passed over it (again something management of the factory should look into).  Nick ended up winning this round, but he would not be so lucky in the second.

Our next race was on what appeared to be a track made mostly of light bridges with no boundaries on either side (*cough* Star Road *cough*).  This is where we learned that in the air you could perform stunts with the right analog stick to earn an offensive meter which your alien/Ben can use to perform an attack based on their abilities from the cartoon.  Drifting is done with the left trigger and fills up a defensive meter that can be used to bring up a shield.  Seems Simberg isn’t familiar with how driving works without a railing to smash into (probably bowls with bumpers too) and I creamed him this go around.  Unfortunately there were only two tracks and we had to move on so the tie breaker will have to be another day.

We played the game on Xbox 360 but it’ll be releasing on just about everything imaginable (PS3, Wii, DS, 3DS) come Fall 2011.  Fans of the cartoon should probably check it out if nothing else because it contains a new character called Fast Track who hasn’t actually appeared in the show quite yet.  Someday I’ll finish what I started. Simberg, you just wait and see.
