by William D'Angelo , posted on 10 October 2014 / 5,413 ViewsUnity Technologies is reportedly in talks to sell, according to CNET. Potential acquirers include Google, among others. Unity has also had serious talks with one would-be buyer. The value of Unity is not known, but a report on Gamesbeat a last month puts the value between $1 billion and $2 billion.
This is also not the first time that there have been talks of Unity selling off. However, this year alone Unity has acquired three different companies. This includes mobile game service Applifier, predictive analytics firm Playnomics, and cloud development service Tsugi.

Please don't...
What about indie developers? o.o
As a developer who uses Unity...please no just no.
Oh god no! This is horrible news for gaming.
This is the sort of thing that could have a massive negative widespread effect across the entire gaming industry. Devs are clearly the first at risk. But the impact on platform holders (especially Nintendo) could be enormous. What percentage of Wii U titles is developed via Unity ?
So if the platform holders are smart - they will coordinate very closely with Unity Technologies.
Indie devs - I advise you to be proactive in reaching out to your platform holders as well as Unity Tech so you can try to influence the outcome. Big ask for small devs with limited relationship management experience. If you have a trade group/industry body that can effectively represent your interests (honoring license agreements, support, pricing, availabilty, etc etc) - then its a good idea to coordinate.
If you don't at least try to influence the outcome then you're helpless and you'll get fucked in favor of someone with deeper pockets and an agenda that doesn't match yours.
I could totally see Apple buying them. Its loose change for them and it could immediately do serious harm to the Android and 3DS markets.
Oh Come on!
Companies just can't be independent these days. Everything is getting scooped by Google and the likes...
wow....why?
are they losing money or something?
Probably the owners sees this as the best time to cash in.
