Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise.
In the last seven weeks we have taken a look some of the biggest publishers, first party and third party. This week we will be taking a break from that theme and will be looking at the top 10 bestselling games of May 2012. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.
Looking at the top 10 bestselling games of May 2012, four are for the Xbox 360, four for the PlayStation 3, one for the Wii, and one for the PC. Eight of the top 10 games were released on May, while one was released in March and one in April. Take-Two, Ubisoft and 505 Games each have two games in the top 10. However they are the same game just released on two different platforms, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The top 10 games sold a combined 5.19 million units. The four Xbox 360 games sold a combined 1.58 million units, or 30.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The four PlayStation 3 games sold a combined 1.30 million units, or 25.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one Wii game sold 0.37 million units, or 7.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one PC game sold 1.94 million units, or 37.5 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling games of May 2012 as a bar graph it is easy to see that Diablo III outperformed all the other games by a large margin. It outsold the next closest game, Max Payne 3 for the Xbox 360, by just over three to one. Also the top eight games sold more than 200,000 units.
As a quick note here are other sales figures for May 2012. The 3DS sold 533,694 units, PlayStation 3 477,979 units, the Xbox 360 351,081 units, the Wii 234,702 units, the PSP 212,901 units, the PlayStation Vita 192,702, and the DS 175,176 units. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sold the most software, both selling more than six million units of software. Also the top 5 publishers sold more than two million units. These publishers are Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Take-Two, Ubisoft and Blizzard.
