by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 May 2012 / 13,264 ViewsWelcome to the new ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise.
This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 bestselling Nintendo games, including games that were bundled. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

Looking at the top 10 bestselling Nintendo games all the games are on Nintendo’s four of their top five bestselling platforms. They are for the Wii, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) / Famicom, Game Boy, and DS. Five of the top 10 games are for the Wii, two for the NES, two for the Game Boy, and one for the DS.
The top 10 games sold a combined 352.74 million units. The five Wii games have sold a combined 194.33 million units to date, however a lot of these sales comes from bundles. The two NES games sold 70.5 million units and again they were heavily bundled. The two Game Boy games sold 61.63 million units and Tetris was bundled with the handheld at release. Finally the one DS game has sold 28.23 million units to date.
While Mario might be Nintendo’s mascot only four of the top 10 bestselling Nintendo’s games are a Mario game. Super Mario Bros. (NES) the first Mario game in a Nintendo platform is the bestselling game with the name. A fun little fact is that Mario was originally called Jumpman in the arcade game Donkey Kong and was first called Mario in the game Mario Bros. which was first released as an arcade game. The biggest non-mainline Mario games are easily Mario Kart, as the Wii version is the second bestselling Mario game. The other two Mario games are the latest 2D mainline games, which are for the current generation.

Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling Nintendo games as a bar graph really shows the advantage Wii Sports had being bundled with Nintendo’s bestselling platform until last year. As a quick note it is the bestselling video game of all time if you include bundles. Super Mario Bros. (NES) has sold a little more than half of what Wii Sports has to date.
Number three to nine have all sold similar numbers, with sales between them only varying by four million. Even New Super Mario Bros. Wii the number 10 bestselling Nintendo game has sold 25.38 million units. This is nearly five million more than the bestselling game on a single non-Nintendo platform. That game being Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2), which sold 20.81 million units.

You could have just written "Top 10 Best Selling Retail Games Ever."
really!!
A lot of those games were pack ins, but those sales are still very impressive. If you exclude San Andreas Nintendo would have the top 20 best selling video games ever; pretty crazy when you think about it. Also, the title is misleading because there is no other game which has sold more than these 10. It should be "top 10 video game sales".
The most impressive is certainly Mario Kart Wii. It reached nearly 30 million without a single bundle. The same cannot be said for any other games on that list.
It currently in a bundle at least in the US, it is now bundled with the Wii, but since the Wii isn't selling like it use to, it doesn't have as much effect as it did with Wii Sports.
I'm pretty sure Mario Kart is now bundled with Wiis, nevertheless 30 mil is still an impressive number
There's a mario kart wii bundle both for the old Wii and the new Wii with GC backwards compatibility.
without*
i just don't understand the need for you to post such a blatant lie. The game has been bundled a lot for the past year. Regardless it would still have been the best selling retail game ever.
350 million units, stack them on top of ach other and you could probably reach the moon.
Is it bad if I have only owned three of these? Super Mario/Duck hunt and Tetris. I have played most of them though.
mario kart wii has a bundle in the US at least where they replaced wii sports resort with mario kart wii. Still 95%+ of the sales are not bundles i'm sure. NSMB wii didn't get most of its sales from bundle either, but there are a decent share of them. Pokemon is still impressive of course. All the other games had massive bundling of probably over 50% of the sales.
wii fit and wii fit + deserve on hounorary spot.
Ehh... I was going to post something interesting until I saw everyone else do it. :/
Still... Congrats for having the best selling games Nintendo. It shouldn't matter if they are bundled or not. If people didn't want the game then they wouldn't have bought the bundled version.
Wii Sports SHOULD DEFINITELY be on the list because it is what moved so many Wii systems in the initial frenzy.
Are you trying to humiliate the others companies?
Wii Sports is a pack ins nobody counts it. But i know my words are like spent for the wind...
Wii Sports should not be on this list.
If wii sports did not launch with the Wii, neither the Wii nor Wii sports (since it wouldn't have existed) would have enjoyed such sales.
What I'm trying to say is that Wii Sports sold the Wii, and the Wii reached 95M globally this far. Even if it wasn't bundled, it would have monster sales. So removing it from the list wouldn't make sense either...
