MCV: Xbox-Next, PS4 Both Assured At E3 2012 Say Sources
by Jacob Mazel, posted on 06 January 2012 / 3,270 ViewsIt begins. Rumors of new consoles - beyond the Wii U - have sporadically appeared across the internet for months now. MCV now says that it has heard from high-level sources that both the next Xbox and PS4 will be announced at E3 2012.

With a Wii U like roll out, i.e. an E3 reveal 18 months before launch, the announcements would also recognize the reality that a 2011 HD peak of 14-15m for X360 / PS3 each, with the total HD base already at 120m at the end of 2011, will decline more quickly for Sony and Microsoft individually than the Wii did when selling 26m in 2008 for a 50m total at year end. From 2009 to whenever Wii stops selling, Nintendo will sell another 50m+ Wiis at least as the system sits at 95m already. From 2012 to whenever X360 & PS3 stop selling there might be another 80m HD consoles sold (assuming the entire PS2 generation buys an HD system eventually) - but those numbers will be split just about 50-50 between Sony and Microsoft - and if Wii U flies off shelves the figure could be far lower. The same risk exists for either / both companies if X720 or PS4 launches unexpectedly early and vigorously along with Wii U. Risks of not launching new consoles soon are growing for both companies. Sony in particular may have nothing to lose with an unexpectedly early launch, as the company is about to have it's fourth fiscal year in a row (April 2008 to March 2012) without profiting a dime. The off chance of another PS2-like hit, and cutting off Microsoft's year-long head start might be worth it for the company even for the potential of profit.

Many are expecting them to be announced at E3 2012,but it would be foolish for someone to believe that they will be released in 2012. I expect both consoles to be released in 2013.

I always expected MS to announce this year E3 at the latest... Sony may wish to follow suit. Interestingly if they launch at the same time it forces purchasers to decide on which to adopt first. This should be bad for Sony in the US and bad for the 360 in mainland Europe.... should be...
really excited to see these new consoles. E3 should actually be good for once this year then.
Sustaining PSV and PS4 launch within a year of each other? Seems highly unlikely. PS3 had it's best year to date and has officially won the best selling home console of the year for the first time, would seem foolish to kill the potential sales when they're just gaining momentum.
But they will lose that momentum if both Nintendo and MS releases their next console.

if their hardware is reasonably priced and is as appealing from the start, they will have no trouble catching up with the competition, even if they do arrive later on the scene. This generation they've messed up big time - price wise and initial software support. A company that posted losses for the last few years cannot afford to kill it's biggest moneymaker at the moment by announcing it's predecessor, and by "within a year" I meant the Western launch dates - so late 2012/early 2013 would still be within range.

well i guess is the best home selling consoel of teh year since the rest is slowing down as the market is almost satured and Nintendo is not focused on Wii anymore.... noot a big achievement... tehy will need to realise in 2013.

I mean the PSP launched worldwide in 2005 and the PS3 in 2006 so its not inconceivable.

But then again, both PS2 and PS1 had made unbelievable amount of capital for them. The profits from then and the leftover capital was probably more than enough to launch the PSP & PS3, take losses on those and cover some of the losses that other divisions have had since then.

I hope these consoles are fully backwards compatible. It would be cool if the future games are compatible on both the current gen consoles, and the next gen. Like you could buy a game that downgrades for the current gen consoles, but runs in all its glory on the next gen consoles. Kinda like the different settings on pc games. This new generation seems like it may be coming a bit early, but if they could pull off the things described above, then it would make sense.
Yep, makes sense after the PS360 had their best year that Sony/Micro start talking about next gen consoles, "killing" prematurely the HD twins sales like Nintendo did with the Wii. It doesn´t matter that some people (minority) want next gen consoles, 360 proved that the Wii market is there to buy consoles on Holiday seasons (WiiU will be more expensive then the HD twins when it releases), and the PS3 shows every month outside Nov/Dec that there are a lot of hardcore gamers buying consoles. IMO SONY/Microsoft consoles will not come out before 2013, and my guess is that the 720 will come in mid to fall of 2013 and PS4 any time in 2014 There is only one thing that can change my prediction, if either Sony/Micro want to go after Nintendo and the Casual audience, if so they have to release a new console in the same time frame as the WiiU
yes it makes sense even if many people like you don't understand it. that's how the economy works. companies don't wait until they sell no products anymore to announce their new product. a car manufacturer doesn't announce the new model only when the actual sales are shit aso...

But I think Sony will drop out this time... they will probably wait.. that will aslo be the best thing to do. I also want a PS4 but I think if we want them to continue making big succes, they need to sell more PS3's instead of selling the new version. People always say that they lost alot of money... how much is it actually? It sounds like they are fucking poor... but I don't think so.
But I hope the next gen consoles will support Ultra High Definition (UHD) approximately 7400 x 4800 resolution!!!
Console graphics are dying... look at Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, Saints Row 2, Assassins Creed Revelations... all crappy graphic games on the consoles... the Wii and PC is ruling these days.. well only for the hardcore gamers.. those casual gamers is definitly something else when we talk about a new console in the future.
PS4 will be 2014 i'd say they need the PS3 to sell many more units to repay the losses the console has cost them.....
the high price point of the wii u will be a challenge for them due to the tablet costs but if they can offer something new and Sony/Microsoft offer the same old franchises with better graphics Nintendo will triumph again.....
I have to say I would be surprised (but not totally) if Sony and Microsoft decided to reveal their new systems at this year's E3. With the Wii U being slightly more powerful than the Playstation 3 at it's best, I didn't think that system would be a threat to Sony and Microsoft, but I guess the worry that the Wii U will really take off being the newest system and Microsoft or Sony outsmarting one another in release, features, and marketing I guess does kind of point to a reveal in E3 2012. VG Chartz has a good explaination on why this would happen. @Mordred11 Yes there is no chance that the next Xbox and Playstation will be released this year. It's too soon. 2013 is the bet if they are having the reveal this year.
Showing this year to a 2013 release makes perfect sense to Sony, not so much to Microsoft. However, this is good news to Nintendo, as the Wii U release will sound more natural as the competition is getting their own a few months later.
I think it is still too early for new consoles. The incremental improvement will be noticable, but not enough to justify $400 and $500 consoles. We faster internet connections still, much larger storage devices to deal with the high resolution and 3D games (blu-ray isn't enough), and another step up of processors for AI, physics, and additional gameplay functions. Otherwise the next generation will be a short-lived generation. Also the price of Solid State needs to fall even more.
The Wii won't sell an additional 50+ million units. Not when so many new systems are launching within the next couple years.

Announcement sure, but release is more than a year off that. Maybe more if the systems perform well against WiiU this holiday.
OH CRAP TIME TO SAVE UP MY MOOLAH FOR THE MOST DESERVING CONSOLE FOR GENERATION 8.
I really don't want this to happen especially from sony the ps3 is in its best position now and the games for it being exclusives or multi platforms are keepin on comin and there getting better and better it.... the PS3 has at least 2 years left in it !
It's not like they're going to kill the PS3 as soon as PS4 is out. Look at PS2, it's still being manufactured...
I remember a time when people said retailers wouldn't support PS3 for 10 years (when Sony was constantly going on about its 10 year plan). All I can say to that is LOL.

its a preference, id prefer them not to release the ps4 in 2012 or 2013 im sure many would agree.

This will probably be the most exciting E3 ever if that happens. But I don't think we will see either consoles until 2013...Wii U will probably come out this year though.
the only thing showing these consoles in 2012 does is kill sales of the 360 and ps3. wait to E3 2013 or a special show say around February 2013 if you want a late summer launch at most make sure dev kits and games are along. right now they might want to push another revision to save costs, and maybe one to make the kinect smaller room friendly
That seems pretty obvious since they have to come up with something to compete with Wii U...
